Bears, Bruins Wood's Choice For Saturday By HAL WOOD BAN FRANCISCO (UP)—Fellow named Confuscious say: Shortest distance between two points is straight line. So well get right down to the club of the problem and make out near studded selections for the week. For the season: Won 57, lost 17, .770 percentage. California over Southern California: The odds favor the Trojans by six points. But the Bears have an up- and-coming young squad with the ability to score touchdowns nearly at will. Score should be something like 21-20 for the Bears. Teams Are Even Sanford and Washington (tie): Can't figure this one out. The Bruks have shown improvement every game since their 50-0 shellacking by Michigan. But so has Stanford. The Indians are due for a let-down after their upset win over UCLA. UCLA over Washington State: It will be a sad day for the Cougars. Those Bruins have the finest bunch of linemen on the coast and some very good backs. By about 60. Idaho over Oregon State: The Beavers haven't scored a touchdown this season and they haven't made the close. Idaho is no ball of fire, but the Vandals at least know what pay-dirt smells like. By six. COP in Trouble Marquette over College of Pacific: The Hilltopppers from Milwaukee have one of their finest teams in recent years. COP has had difficulty doing anything right since its upset win over Stanford in the season's opener. Marquette by 21. Oregon over San Jose State: The Saints Bees Defeat CMA in touchdown on a 30-yard sprint the only third-quarter TD. Robert Ledesma broke away the single-wing to open the quarter, and with good down-blocking by Nelson and Thou went 30 yards for another Seavers haven't scored a touchdown this season and they haven't made the close. Saints Bees Defeat CMA in League Play Saint Catherinees Bees walloped California Military Academy yesterday on the losers field. 27-0, turning in their best performance of the season, according to Coach Marty Nunes. CMA took the opening kickoff, put the ball in play on the Saints 40 yard line, drove to the one foot line, and St. Catherinees put on a great goal line stand to take over on downs at that point. Robert Thomas took the ball on a quick opener for a first down, Ernest Nelson racked up another first on the next play and Thomas then went all the way (60 yards) for a TD, and the only score of the first half was Robert Ledesma converted. Ernest Nelson scored the second touchdown on a 30-yard sprint the only third-quarter TD. Robert Ledesma broke away the single-wing to open the quarter, and with good down-blocking by Nelson and Thou went 30 yards for another point. In the closing minutes, Salts began another drive sticky-fingered End Frank took a pass good for 20 yards. Ledesma, on a reverse, skied end for the final TD of the game than scoring his third conversion score. 27-0. Ron Murray and Eddie were the defensive standouts the locals along with Teddy D Outstanding subs were G Patrie, left guard, Earl Fisk, tackle. Hal Thomas DO FIGURES LIE? Composite statistics covering Anaheim's four practice games for the 1883 football season reveal and confirm the Colonists weaknesses and strong points as they have unfolded from game to game. There appears little need to dwell in detail upon these figures, however, a few items are noteworthy. The most disturbing factor lies in the locals inability to retain possession of the ball — sustain a drive. Opponents have found it comparatively easy to put first-downs together — sufficiently to keep the ball sixty per cent of total playing time. Only in the El Rancho game was Anaheim able to dominate in total plays. In contradiction thereof, the home team can boast the phenomenal average per carry, from scrimmage plays, of 6.4 yards against opponents 2.3, which only serves to point up the fact that Anaheim backs are either the finest in the league, and/or the line CAN, and occasionally does, open up some tremendous holes. The burden of ball possession does fall heavily upon the shoulders of the men up front. So, the ground game cannot carry more than its share of the responsibility for our lack of ball control. The glaring weakness lies in the passing game, or, lack of it. Many times in the course of a game, the third-and-five, or, third-and-seven situation arises and with it the pass play. (Defensive backs have not been harried by this department of the Colonists game, what with a pass-completion record of only 24 percent. The Blue and Gold receivers have hardly been tested for their smashing capabilities, inasmuch as the pass is hardly ever within reach. A couple of completions out of the first five passes thrown, early in the game, will do wonders at loosening up the defenses, and more than incidentally, BALL POSSESSION for one more series.
