Van Hoorebeke Woodsheds Varsity for League Opener The Colonist varsity has not been standing around this week, licking its Las Vegas wounds, according to Coach Clare Van Hoorebeke. Rigorous practice has been the daily rule, as the Blue and Gold prepare for their league-opener against the question-mark Ollers of Huntington Beach. Saints Cees Win Thriller From CMA, 13-0 St. Catherine's Cees made it a clean sweep over CMA yesterday, winning a hard fought tussle, 13-0. Coach Hamilton said after the game, "Every one of our boys did a bang up job of blocking and tackling and I was very proud of their fight and hustle." St. Catherines took the opening kickoff, Jasperica returning to his 35. Then began a 65-yard drive that tacked up the Saints first touchdown. Cabrol picked up three yards off tackle, Jasperica went 15 for the first down, Cabrol swept right end for 30 yards with key blocks by Schneider and Jasperica. Fox took a pitchout from Langley, skirted left end picking up two more blocks by Villadona and Cleary and went into the end zone for the score. CMA took the ensuing kickoff and two plays later, Burgess hit Oller Coach Ed Goddard has served notice on the rest of the league that his outfit will refuse to roll over and play dead and anyone that drops his guard will rue the day. "The Huntington Beach pre-season record may fail to impress our opponents," said Goddard, "and we hope to clip a couple of them before the league gets wise that we're laying in the bushes for 'em." Coach Van Hoorebeke is not at all pleased with the progress of his men in defending the combination of Goddard's version of the short-punt and TCU-spread, and Van refuses to predict the outcome. According to reports received by Van from Oller opponents, Colonist-backs will meet their match in the powerful running of Ardis Williams and Bob Harrison, and the passing of Quarterback Bill Lescher. Lescher completed 10 passes in the Santa Barbara game in which the Ollers held the Dons even in first downs. Game time is 7:30, Friday night, at Huntington Beach. the eight and again on the three. Next game for the Indians, Friday, Oct. 22, will be the first of the Sunset League matches, with Newport Harbor there. Similarity in the soaring pattern throughout the first three quarters was evident in the Bullpup game, as compared with the previous week's South Pasadena contest. Both games ended at the half with a 7-0 score in favor of Indian opponents. Fourth quarter play in the Pasadena College game was the big difference. Whereas Fullerton had tallied two more touchdowns against South Pasadena to win the game on Oct. 9, 19 to 7, last week saw the Indians faltering as Pasadena College tallied another touchdown. Although the Bullpup kick was blocked by Fullerton's Tom Rodger (score 13-7), the Indians were unable to score again and were repeatedly threatened by Bullpup offense until the end of the game. The Indian score in the third quarter resulted from a lateral from Darrall Roberts to Tom Rodger to Ray Fujine for 38 yards to the Bullpup 13-yard line. Henry Mason, John Kulstad, and Roberts pushed up to the line, the last-named carrying over for the TD. Sports Parade By OSCAR FRALEY NEW YORK — The kid nobody wanted was the middleweight champion of the world today but, as usual in the hectic life of Carl (Bobo) Olson, everything was just a little late. Ten years ago, the balding young man of 25 was a stray on the dead end streets of Honolulu. He had, as do all other youngsters, great dreams and aspirations. None of them concerned the middleweight championship of the world. Little Bobo dreamed a lot of bright and gaudy dreams, but dreams which couldn't come true. For his parents had separated and when you are the offspring of a Swedish-American ex-Army sergeant and a Hawaiian-Portuguese mother, whether you like it or not, help is scarce and seldom offered. So the plotting of his life was left in the hands of the broad-shouldered youngster who looked older than his 15 years. And a scrap on a bus winn a sailor, plus the soon found ability handle himself in those dead end brawls quickly charged the course which Bobo was to follow. Twice before he beat Randy Turp'in in Madison Square Garden last night, Bobo had a crack at the middleweight crown which he finally wears today. Both times he was beaten by a dancing dynamiter remembered in boxing history as Sugar Ray Robinson. That second bout with Robinson, almost two years ago Bobo he could destroy if he ever got him again. But Sugar Ray title and so, as the welted Bobo slumped in his dressing room, something missing from umph. "This is the biggest life," Bobo said in less monotone. But Sugar Ray vacated the title and so, as the tired and wretched Bobo slumped on a bench in his dressing room, there was something missing from his triumph. "This is the biggest thrill of my life," Bobo said in a flat, listless monotone. No Excitement This wasn't an exhilarated, deliriously happy man whose dreams all had suddenly come true Bobo was a dead tired man who had exhausted every ounce of strength in doing a rough, demanding job. But it had no kick for him. The early dreams of boyhood were buried back there in Honolulu—and the substitute dream of being middleweight champion of Detroit Lions Hit Hard by Injuries DETROIT (UP) — The Detroit Lions, hard hit by injuries in their last two games, probably will have most of their regulars on the sidelines when they meet the San Francisco Forty Niners next Sunday. the world was almost two years late being satisfied. "I wish," he said in a flat undertone which was almost lost in the usual clamor of the winner's dressing room, "that this had happened against Ray Robinson. He was the guy I wanted to beat." To Bobo, it was, as usual, just a little late. Coach Buddy Parker of the Lions announced yesterday it is "very doubtful" whether Doak Walker, Bob Hoernschemeyer, Cloye Box, Les Bingaman, Gene Gedman and Thurman McGraw will see any action in the game. Three other first stringers viciously were placed on the jured reserve list and won't be available. They are Jim Doran and Sonny Gandee, defensive ends, and Jim Martin, offensive tackle.
