I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!—Mrs. Doras M. Prickett, 330½ S. Melrose, could find no other words when Silver Bonus Representative Bonnie Geise, Jackson Drug Co., informed her that her name had been drawn for the $223.60 Silver Bonus award... When asked if she had shopping, Mrs. Prickett literally flew toward the rear of her home and came back waving a Silver Bonus store receipt for exactly $5.00, and still repeating the words, "I can't believe it"... Miss Geise counted out the pile of bills, congratulated Mrs. Prickett, and reminded the smart shopper to re-register if she wished to be eligible for next week's gift of $50. (Bulletin Photo)

Stock Market in Wide Raise
NEW YORK — The value of all securities listed on the Stock Exchange rose more than one billion dollars today on increased volume.
The rise in the industrial stocks was the widest in almost a year. They had gains ranging to almost two points with a few pivots showing much wider improvement. As measured by the averages, the upsurge in the industrials was the sharpest since last Nov. 18.
Railroad equities also met a considerable amount of demand. They ran up more than a point. Utilities, however, only rose a few cents.
The rise today was an extension of yesterday's advance. Sentiment in the past few days has improved considerably. The highly favorable earnings report by Republic Steel continued to bolster the market.
The reports in the street that the administration will further ease money rates also helped the market considerably today.
General Electric gained nearly 8 points on the statement by its president that electric power production from atomic energy will be a reality within five years.
In the main industrial group, steel shares were leaders with gains of more than a point. High priced oil equities, yesterday's feature, also tacked on good gains.

Pope Protests Poland’s Action
VATICAN CITY (UP) — Pope Plus XII today issued a "most sorrowful and firm protest" against actions taken by Poland's Communist government against the Roman Catholic Church.
In a message to the Catholic cergy, marking Mission Sunday, Oct. 18, the Pope also especially deplored the persecution of clergymen in the Far East and most particularly in Communist China.
He warned that no region in the world is sheltered today from "the disguised or overt propaganda of atheistic Communism."
Of Poland, the Pope said:
"At the present moment, from every corner of the earth there come to us unnumerable testimonies of the emotion and indignation of the Catholic world following the violence recently used against a new member of the Sacred College, our most dear son Stephen Cardinal Wyszynski, archbishop of Gniezne and of Warsaw, primate of Poland."

East German Reds to Purge Anti-Communists
BERLIN — Nine leaders were fired from the Central Council of the East German Metalworkers Union today at the start of a purge of Soviet zone trade unions.
The official Communist trade union newspaper Tribuene said the nine leaders, including former union chairman Hans Schmidt, were dismissed for "opportunity following June 17," the day workers started their revolt against the East German government.
Altogether, five million members were being investigated in a new attempt to oust any anti-Communists rebels and leaders of the resistance movement.
The purge, scheduled to last one month, appeared designed to weed out workers who led the June 17 uprising. Ringleaders of strikes that have plagued East Germany since then and workers who picked up "Elsenhower food parcels" in West Berlin.
