LAS VEGAS AERIAL SQUADRON—Quarterback John Demman, right, pitched the six-point strike against Colton last week that kept his Wildcats in the undefeated, untied column. Demman is a quadruple threat man, capable of doing just about anything with a football, and do it well. End Fred Leavitt has been Demman's principal receiver until the last two games, when he was shifted to tackle to plug injury gap. Leavitt is performing his new job so well, he is to be left there. The Colonists be in Las Vegas this Friday night in an effort to halt the Wildcat winning streak at five straight.
Hal Wood Picks Bruins by 13, Trojans by 20
By HAL WOOD
SAN FRANCISCO (UP)—As the saying goes, any blind pig some times runs into an scorn.
So last week, we picked 15 right, four wrong and there were two ties we're just not mentioning.
Here are the weekend specials on the pigskin front (to date: Won 43, lost 13 for a .768 average):
UCLA over Stanford: This is the game of the week and it won't be such a pushover as predicted earlier in the season. Bruins by 13.
Southern Cal over Oregon State:
The poor Beavers go into their fifth consecutive game without a score, and the chances are very slim that they'll get one there, even if the Trojans play worse than they did against the Huskies. By 20.
Washington State over Idaho: The Cougars and Vandals always play close games, but the WSC entry has a slightly better record.
Washington over Oregon: It appears that the Webfoots shot their bolt in their TV opener against Nebraska. They haven't scored a touchdown since, and the Huskies have been improving. By six.
Other Selections
California over San Jose State: The Bears expect trouble here, because Pappy Waldorf told them but this one won't be any closer than was the Penn game. The Golden Bears definitely are on the march.
Texas Tech over College of Pacific: Coach Jack Meyers is having trouble making his club click since the opening game victory over Stanford. This should be a scoring battle.
Also: Cal Poly over San Francisco State; Marquette over Arizona; Artizona (Tempe) State; West Texas State; Arizona (Pstaff) State over LaVerne; Mexico over San Diego State; Fresno State over Nevada; cidental over Peppardine; S Barbara over Los Angeles; S Humboldt State over Ore Frush; Southern Oregon over C State; College of Idaho over offic; Linfield over Whitman; get Sound over British Columbia Whitworthover, Central Washington.

Friday for Game With Vegas
The Colonists' Varsity football squad accompanied by Coaches Clare Van Hoorebeke, Bill Hicks and John Wallin will climb aboard the Las Vegas Special, Friday, at 7 a.m., all with a single purpose — BEAT VEGAS!
A large order to be sure, however, IT CAN BE DONE, according to word received from our capionage system. This information is not meant to be construed as anything pertaining to a particular "Wildcat" weakness—instead, our informer points out, Anaheim possesses the scoring machinery requisite to outsourcing any given opponent on any given day, PROVIDING every blocker connects solidly with his man. The Colonists running-backs are a constant explosive threat and given an even chance those long bursts will pay off.
Las Vegas goes into tomorrow's game riding a five-game winning streak as follows:
Las Vegas 71 - St. George 0
Las Vegas 52 - Basie 7
Las Vegas 27 - Prescott 0
Las Vegas 13 - Compton 6
Las Vegas 6 - Colton 0
The Wildcats have scored 169 points against opponents 13 points.
The most significant victory in the Vegas chain was the win over Compton, always a tough competitor.
The Colonists themselves believe they can avenge the 13-20 loss suffered last year in the famous gambling spa. They also feel they are a better ball club than the 1952 model.
State Fish and Game Expects $750,000 Loss; Faced With Fee Raises
SACRAMENTO (UP)—California sportsmen either will have to pay more than the current $3 for hunting and fishing licenses or get off their champagne diet. William Silva, chairman of the Fish and Game Commission said late yesterday.
Silva made his remarks at a meeting here of the Wildlife Conservation Board, of which he is also chairman. During a discussion of a proposed hatchery project, he said:
"We're running in the red and it's about time somebody said this: When are we going to get licenses up to the point where sportmen are paying as they go. We can't go on with this champagne appetite with only a beer bottle pocketbook. We've got to..."
Hal Thomas
Last night this corner risked the wrath of the Colonist coaching staff and began dwelling upon the capabilities of certain players whose individual performances have been so manifest that it seems prudent not to recognise the guys for talents displayed thus far.
It was inevitable that I should have opened these thumb-nail observations with the backs. These fellows efforts are substantiated with statistics; figures the fan wants to hear about. For my money I buy the guy that sweeps the to mesh, or, the machinery doesn't go—the forward wall, that is.
We look at one more back, then a couple of my guys.
Don Leigh
The surprise package in Van streets—the unsung gear that has Hoorebeke's backfield is undoubtedly a little left-half scatback whose yards gained per carry is at least four times his height, Don Leigh.
Leigh in three games has delivered the mall 22 times for 159 net yards or 7.2 yards per carry and if this kind of ball-totin' doesn't simplify matters for quarterback Paul Grover, especially when added to Mickey Gouyd's and Dean Philpott's average then I'm no arm-chair quarterback.
Don is no pile driver as indicated by his five-foot-seven inch, 151 pound chassis, but he is shifty enough to make those end sweeps work for most of his yardage.
He has been hard to handle thus far and is adding polish every game.
Bob and Mike
In discussing Bob Lambeth and Mike Troop I find it impossible to think of them individually, so, it's Bob and Mike, they think alike.

How much more could John Wallin ask than to have two men like 'em? (of course, seven would be heaven-on-earth).
Both are easily coached — have splendid attitudes — go all-out to give their team everything they've got, and they block viciously.
ABCDEFGI When Grover decides to send Philpot up the middle, a Mack truck could go through the hole this pair opens up. The majority of Dean's yardage this season was sprung by our "right-side twins" and so will it continue, with only occasional lapses. One could safely call 'em the "guarantee kids", kinda like having mon-Mike is a senior—and Wallin talks to himself at the very mention of the word.
Don't be surprised if this 170 pounds of strawberry blond from Cypress makes some of the all-league or CIF selections.
On the other hand there's a bright side—Bob is a Junior. What he doesn't learn about football this year he can finish next and that 180 pounds could be close to 207 pounds come September 1954.
Yes sireece, a pair of good boys.

"Give This Old-Timer A Great Big Cigar"
NORMAN, Okla. (UP)—Football isn't the game it used to be, it's much better, says Bennie Owen, 78-year-old former Oklahoma coach.
Owen "grew up" in football in the days of Michigan's Fielding H. Yost, when 60-minute players were a dime a dozen. The retired Sooner coach helped Yost build his famous point-aminate outfit and other great teams before moving here. He still likes the 1953 brand.
"Where we had one good man, nowadays they have a dozen," he observed. "People often ask me if any of the old time players could make the big college teams of today. Sure, lots of them could make the modern clubs, but we didn't have more than one or two like that every year."
Owen was honored as a new member of football's Hall of Fame Saturday before the Oklahoma-Texas game at Dallas.
