The Trojan mentor still isn't sure exactly how good a ball club he has and probably won't get a much better line on them this week although the leaky SC pass defense is due to have a busy afternoon. Johnny Cherberg's charges bounced back last week with a 28-0 win over an Oregon State team that has yet to score a point. The previous Saturday the Huskies were humiliated 50-0 by a good but not great Michigan team. Despite this unhappy beginning Cherberg has the makings of a petty tough outfit. In George Black has one of the coast's best receivers and Doug McClery and Jim Warsinske are just a step behind. And an adequate replacement for departed Don Heinrich is Sandy Lederman, the former prep great from Santa Monica High School. Southpaw Sandy hit on 15 of 25 passes against Oregon State but the Huskies made the big yardage on the ground with 304 yards. Although both starting halfbacks have been lost for the year Cherberg has come up with good replacements in Jack Kyllingstad and D Stewart Crook, both vets. Bill Albrecht suffered a broken leg while Soph star Mike Monroe broke a wrist, both against Colorado. A potentially good line with Tackles Duane Wardlow and Dean Chambers, plus Guard Milt Bohart and Jim Noe can be very tough. Although he was pleased with the way the offense is improving Hill was quite perturbed with the defense in the 27-14 win over Indiana. The supposedly not too tough Hoosiers marched through the Trojans at will on their first TD drive. True, the SC forwards got onto the Split, a bit in the second half but certainly not well enough. Troy's trouble is one which is quite evident over the country. Coaches have made their teams from '52's offensive stars and they are slow in learning newly accepted defensive duties. The play of So-Capt. George Zozanic continues to pace the Trojans. George's all-around generalship was evident again against Indiana while his beautifully timed pass theft was the clincher. Wingback Lindon Crow was able to go full speed for the first time in two weeks although Hill used Bob Buckley much in not trying to return Crow too soon to action. Play of Ed Pucci at guard drew special praise from Hill as did the always fine performance of CoCapt. Tom Nickoloff at end. The passing game has picked up bit and Mentor Hill warr much more is coming. Smashing of all three full was tops while Bozano's continues good. THEY'RE HERE! EDITOR Sports Parade By OSCAR FRALEY NEW YORK (UP) — Major League baseball, with the paternal and benevolent approval of a man named Ford Frick, proved once again during the recent World Series that it is big business masquerading as a "sport." In the mechanical manufacture of his runs and plenty of errors, this was a superb series. Emotionally, and in the matter of "color," it was as exciting as a dull Sunday in the suburbs. Actually, this was a bitterly fought, knock down and drag out series in which there was much ill will among the rival competitors. Thanks to Frick, a man who realizes that poorly-steered arguments hastened the demise of his predecessor as commissioner, these "rhubarbs" rarely were made public. Must Keep Quiet But the public, which "made" baseball and keeps it functioning, had to "eat cake." Certainly those who "covered" the World Series know, even if they don't pass it on to the customers, that the human equation has been stripped from baseball. Gone are the Dizzy Deans and the Ruths—you think—because players today never pop off or rant and rave. They do—in private. They can't—in public. The official regulation of the mind goes even further. The game will be the first Eastern NC Conference squabble for both teams and a rugged battle is a store for the fans. The highly touted Indians roster reflects names from 25 different high schools, and such a display of fancy talent is likely to swing the pendulum against the Pirates, whose team personnel consists almost entirely of men from local county high schools. The game will be another test of the short-punt versus split T or sliding T, which features the quarterback moving about the line of perimeter with the option of pitching out, cutting back or passing. A good field general makes this defense one of the most deceptive manchines in football. The shortount requires a versatile tallback (left half), a runner, passer andicker. John Steinborn is the answer to Coach Rosso's dream in this passing game has picked up quite a bit and Mentor Hill warns that much more is coming. The line mashing of all three full-backs was fops while Bozanic's throwing continues good. Colorado Elk, Deer Hunting Opens Late Dominic Hoffman received a telegram yesterday from the Colorado Fish and Game Commission, advising that all areas in the state are closed to deer and elk hunting due to fire hazards. The season will open October 24 and closes November 9. Anterless elk validations will be made October 22. If It's News You'll See It In The Bulletin Certainly those who "covered" the World Series know, even if they don't pass it on to the customers, that the human equation has been stripped from baseball. Gone are the Dizzy Deans and the Ruths—you think—because players today never pop off or rant and rave. They do—in private. They can't—in public. The official regulation of the mind goes even further. Managers and players were warned, prior to this series, not to dispute or contradict umpire's decisions. Thus, after Umpire Art Gore made an outrageously fast call at third base against the Dodgers, Manager Chuck Dressen of the Dodgers almost leaped out of his longies at the time, but later would say only that it was "close." The word was mim'cked by all his players, indicating that the law had been laid down en masse. Roy campanella, in a heat which baseball and keeps it functioning, had to "eat cake." Teran, who took a cure for his admitted drug addiction before making a short-lived ring comeback, was hospitalized Tuesday night after his wife told detectives he had locked himself in the bathroom of their East Los Angeles home and swallowed a bottle of sleeping pills.
