Underdog Colonists Braced for Redlands Invasion Friday Night at La Palma Park
Coach Van Hoorsbeke put his varsity team through comparatively light work yesterday, omitting strenuous contact and substituting skull practice.
Bill Hicks held a long workout in pass defense, and John Wallin had the squad charging the dummy.
Van feels there is little more he and his assistants can do until the team gets a good hard game under their belts.
Redlands comes to town, Friday night, loaded with power. It must be recalled, the Terriers had a great squad last year. Anaheim falling before the crack outfit 26 to 6, and with 14 lettermen back, Coach "Buck" Weaver doesn't figure to drop this one.
The Colonists will not be at full strength for the contest, with Herrera, Brown, and Gouyd almost definitely out because of minor alliances. Herrera and Brown have sore backs, and Gouyd has a bad knee and a trick ankle.
Van DeWarker is not up to par physically but may recover in time to see service.
Van Hoorsbeke refuses to concede defeat for his team. "Redlands has played two full-scale ball games already," said Van, "and they are undoubtedly far ahead of us in experience, as well as depth, however, upsets are no novelty in this game, and I won't believe it can't happen to us."
The coach continued, "our boys are pretty green in spots and they'll make some mistakes, but if the squad can muster the right attitude and desire to win, I can see no reason for us to anticipate defeat this Friday night."
Position analysis of the team, we look at the current status of the backs.
At quarter, it appears to be Paul Grover, George Dena, and Ron Fuller in that order—
Grover is standing (however lightly) on experience. He is puzzling everyone with his shabby faking and his spotty passing. He is not as sharp as last year.
Dena is sure to see action Friday night off his steady improvement. He knows the job, uses his head, and is performing well the mechanics of ball handling and passing.
Fuller will be seeing action later in the season. His attitude is good, he's working hard and only needs to sharpen his finesse. Lack of know-how sums up his progress to date.
At left half, Don Leigh will have to carry the load, this Friday, with Herrera a doubtful starter. Leigh runs well and is catching passes, but his blocking carries insufficient authority. Don hits weakly and consequently is being brushed off; until he learns to contain the block beyond initial impact, he will not be able to keep Herrera out of the ball game—
Henry Herrera is a good blocker and is rapidly showing signs of becoming a ball packer and pass snatcher. Henry's big weakness is his inability to move quickly to his left.
The right half position is in good hands.
Mickey Gouyd is the fastest man on the squad, a good ball carrier, hard runner, and a good blocker. They don't come too big for Mickey, and the 12 to 15 pounds weight he has added since last year will pertoire.
Vince Deveney is also and can spell Gouyd anytime isn't as fast as Mickey, blocking needs to improve injury beset Deveney and about four practice sessions attitude is fine and he is look for some fine work man.
The fullback spot is on cure as is Dean Philip health. If the team is offense, then Dean must of mail. If Van Hooret find a capable replace Philpott, coach would move back to left half where Sunset league last year.
Roy Weaver was being ed for Philpott unders may yet wind up there but do the team a lot of go half and will likely see duty in that position.

Vince Deveney is also capable and can spell Gouyd anytime. Vince isn't as fast as Mickey, and his blocking needs to improve. A groin injury beset Deveney and cost him about four practice sessions. His attitude is fine and he is eager so look for some fine work from this man.
The fullback spot is only as secure as is Dean Philpott's good health. If the team is to roll on offense, then Dean must pack a lot of mail. If Van Hoorebeke could find a capable replacement for Philpott, coach would move his ace back to left half where he was All-Sunset league last year.
Roy Weaver was being considered for Philpott understudy and may yet wind up there but he could do the team a lot of good at left half and will likely see a lot of duty in that position.

NEW YORK (UP)—The most surprising feature of tonight's heavyweight title defense by Rocky Marciano against Roland LaStarza, aside from the 4 to 1 odds against a man who never has been knocked out, is the tale of the tape revelation that the challenger is a bigger man all around.
The price is, of course, predicated on the explosive punching power which has allowed Marciano to flatten 39 of his 44 opponents. It disregards the fact that LaStarza never has been kayed in 56 fights.
But maybe it will surprise you, as it did this corner, to learn that LaStarza actually is larger physically.
Rocky No Giant
Not that Marciano ever has been regarded as a giant. At five feet, 11 inches, he is the shortest man to hold the heavyweight title since Bob Fitzsimmons. But when you see him in action he impresses you in the manner of a berserk concrete mixer. Possibly because of his shortness, he seems to be of unusual breadth and to have tremendous arms, shoulders and legs.
LaStarza, on the other hand, seems almost slender and too small all around ever to be much of a heavyweight.
But the tape tells a different story. In every measurement, the challenger is larger than Marciano. He is a quarter-inch taller,
Reynolds, Lopat Likely to Pitch First Two Games
NEW YORK (UP) — Yankee pitching was in sizzling shape today for at least the first two games of the World Series, but Manager Casey Stengel thinks "all those other guys ought to be doing better."
His eyes twinkled with pleasure as the old guy talked about Ed Lopat's seven steady innings in a 3-1 victory over the Athletics. That followed Allie Reynolds' strong two-hit work over the same team the night before.
"They looked pretty good didn't they?" he said. "Lopat said his foot didn't bother him and his control was great. He didn't walk anybody either."
Who'll Pitch?
Did that mean definitely that Reynolds and Lopat would oppose the Dodgers in the first two games at the Stadium?
"Well, we ain't made up our minds yet," Stengel replied. "But I don't think I have to wait until Tuesday to tell you. When we decide we can tell everybody right away."

Pirates Against Harbor Tonight
John Steinborn will lead the Orange Coast College Pirates against the rugged Harbor Junior College Thursday night at Huntington Beach High School Field in a practice football game at 8 p.m.
Versatile John, former Anaheim all around athlete, is cast in the role of tailback in Coach Ray Rosso's short punt attack with the assignment of doing most of the running, passing and kicking for the OCC club. Steinborn starred "in the Pete 13-6 win over Muir last weekend as he bolted away for a 72 yard TD run and scored on a five yard after setting up the payoff play with two successful runs and a pass to end Jerry Carpenter.
In addition, Steinborn topped the team in tackling, averaged 44 yards on five punts and did the kickoff chores.
Line coach John Owens heaped praise upon another Anaheim high boy, Bob Padilla. Owens reported Padilla has the potential of a great College player with experience. Glenn Kaminsky, a third Anaheim boy in the starting lineup fell on the fumble which set up the second OCC score.
Slaughter’s Ex-Wife Sues; Made to Look Ridiculous, Stupid
PEORIA, Ill. (UP) — The divorced wife of baseball star Enos (Country) Slaughter today demanded $227,000 damages on allegations that a razor blade advertisement made her romance look ridiculous.
The advertisement implied she fell in love with the husky St. Louis Cardinal outfielder because she liked his smoothly scraped cheeks, she said.
A suit filed yesterday by Mrs. Mary Slaughter of Galesburg, Ill., named her former husband and the Peoria Journal-Star as defendant.
She charged the Gem Razor Company advertisement appearing May 17 made her look "foolish, stupid and ridiculous."
Owens Rates Rams With Lions; Pool Wails at Offensive Weaknesses
LOS ANGELES — Steve Owen's New York Giants arrived yesterday for their game against the Los Angeles Rams Sunday and Owen immediately handed out praise for the Rams.
"I rate the Rams on a par with Detroit," he declared. "I saw the Rams demolish the Steeler's last Sunday, and their attack was the most balanced I have seen so far."
Owen said he believed the Rams "can go all the way," but cautioned that "of course, injuries could ruin them."
Concerning his own club, Owen said he believed it was slightly stronger than last year.
As if choosing the Giants arrival as the psychological moment, the Rams yesterday released com-
plate statistics for their first eight games.
The record showed that Tom Pears hauled down 38 passes, averaging nearly five per game.
Norman Van Brocklin completed 52 per cent of his losses.
The statistics also showed the Rams ran up 1,656 net yards running to their opponents' 1,128, and 1.217 net yards with forward passes as compared with their opponents' 733.
Meanwhile, Ram mentor Hampion Pool walled that "we never have shown that we consistently could hold our own against the top lines in the league, lines like Detroit's and New York's."
