Any religion whose secret springs do not exceed its surface waters, will evaporate in the burden and heat of the day.—Elizabeth Charles. CALIFORNIA'S HISTORY This is California's Diamond Jubilee year. The seventy-fifth anniversary of this state's admission into the Union is to be celebrated this summer by historical festivals at various points in the state, culminating in the Diamond Jubilee celebration to be held in San Francisco in September. In connection with the observance of this Diamond Jubilee year, it is especially fitting to stress the wonderful history of California. This state would be done an excellent service if its enthusiastic and loyal sons and daughters emblazoned to the world the chief facts in the history of this commonwealth in its seventy-five years of statehood. Here is what one influential California booster says—and his words are to be commended: We have the climatic and the scenic attractions, now let us capitalize our historical features. People go to Europe to absorb history, the Eastern States make their historical spots a special lure for the entire country. Why not do the same here? We have the missions, the Spanish days, Eremont and the Bear Republic, Monterey and those wonderfully heroic days of '49 and the great gold rush, to offer people who want history. The trails of the pudres and the trails of the gold-seekers are of world-wide fame. The land of Bret Harte has as big a drawing power as any other place on earth. "Inside and Out As Safeguard By Auction" Spring cleaning should not confined to the inside of the house but should extend to the premises as well. Furthermore the cleanliness of both should be periodic, rather than seasonal, in the opinion Dr. J. Allen Patton, medicalector of the Prudential Insurance Company at Newark, N.J., makes this timely suggestion more than seventeen million levyholders whose interests he is to safeguard. "Cleanliness should be extended as well as internal." Dr. Patton "In the matter of body cleanliness the tendency is to give more attention to the outside, while opposite is true, ordinarily household conditions. A well-used program in both instances would be preferable and hygienic." Economy is a harsh, cruel word to many a legislator. Prosperity is coming, and not by slow freight, either. It is dishonest to be able to pay an honest debt, and wisely refuse to pay it. California’s Diamond Jubilee year is being observed with an elaborate series of festivals in different localities throughout the state. Tourists who come to California this year will see the state at its best and will be greeted with typical California hospitality. HEALTH AND DIET ADVICE By Dr. Frank McCoy Author of "THE FAST WAY TO HEALTH" GOOD—STARCHES (Continued) Baking the potato is probably the next best method of preparation, making a very wholesome and tasty potato dish, but it will be observed that the skin must be so well cooked by this method, in order to insure that the inside of the potato is sufficiently soft, that the outside is burned to such an extent that the nourishing part just under the skin is completely killed. It is true that just under this burnt material will be found some dextrinized starch, but the organic salts will have been entirely destroyed. However, if sufficient salad and non-starchy vegetables are used, this deficiency of vitamins will not be felt, and the person eating the potatoes will not suffer for their lack. Potatoes may be boiled after they are peeled, but this is never as desirable as if they were cooked in either of the above ways and the skin not removed. They should not be prepared by frying, but mashed potatoes may be used if made with cream and a very little milk, only remember they need thorough mastication. HUBBARD SQUASH is a very tasty starch food and is equally as digestible, whether baked or boiled. If boiled and mashed, cream and butter may be added if desired, in the same way as with mashed potatoes. (To be continued) Pioneer Shingles make safe roofs A safe roof must be more than fire resistant. It must also withstand the beating sun, extreme cold and heavy rains and winds. Flawless fire resistance is only a part of the function of Pioneer Yosemite Asphalt Shingles. Crushed stone, laid on asphalt, makes them 100% efficient. They prevent leakage that spoils plaster—eliminate seepage, that slowly warps and rots the very framework of the structure, and protect mansion and cottage alike. There is a specified type for every kind of roof and for re-roofing they go right over the old roof. Lumber, hardware and building material dealers sell them in red, green, blue black and golden brown. Pioneer Paper Co., Inc. They had filed to appear and show their contract should not voked in view of a large of complaints that had occurred regarding the or the lack of garbage. Collins said complainants should be testify against them if cause. The case was contended the complainants were to appear and state the plaintiff in writing. Collins protested that garbage collectors were to the proper collection bage, since he said they over the buckets and trash for the regular gut. A motion was passed this alleged nuisance. Much interest has been aroused recent years in this phase of with protection that all sorts of risk, of all ages, are active in the regulations as the accompanying figures show. "A wise householder will make detailed examination annually, be any unheathful conditions and necessary repairs, and will then proceed to put his place in shape. Then it will stay that way, and the annual clean-up will be more or less a matter of form and the doing of the long-deferred, if the proper attention is given to sanitation from time to time." "There are many seemingly small things that demand attention" he cautions. "Old cans and other potential receptacles for water which will furnish a breeding place for mosquitoes should be banished, even though so placed that they are not unsightly. In that way spring cleaning may preclude malaria or other summer complications. Garbage pails should be kept closed as well as clean, and must be inaccessible to flies." "Oftentimes in rural districts barns, chicken houses and like are in too close proximity to the house, which is particularly dangerous where water is furnished by the well on the back porch. These should be moved, and once moved they cease to be a menace if properly kept. Yards should be rai-1 and all refuse hauled away." "And finally," Dr. Patton suggests, "make your spring clean a matter of daily routine." PARAGRAPHS By Robert Quillem Nature balances things. Only the sharp cars get the cutting marks. Another way to exterminate our wild life would be to do more spanking. You can't blame the blue laws anybody would get blue if neglected that way. There is one Italian who can predict earthquakes and another who can make them. How does a weak tire know you are all dressed up and ready for a party? A nationism: Passing the truck, the car ahead and the collection plate. People always admire a man with opinions of his own if his opinions match their prejudices. Considering Navy marksmanship, what does a bird man think about while towing his sleeveiter? You know what happened to some when the Senate took charge of things. Democrats don't lack a leader. They have too many leaders, headed in too many directions. COMMENTS of the PRESS What Editors Are Saying DECENTRALIZING CORPORATE OWNERSHIP Santa Barbara News Herbert Hoover, in the course of an address before the National Civic Federation in New York declared that ownership of large utilities and manufacture had been divorced from management in the process of the diffusing ownership among millions of stockholders. This is frank recognition of the fruits of economic and industrial developments which have been in progress for some years. It is the statement in a semi-scientific form of a fact that has been more crudely framed in this wise: "The captains of industry care little who owns the stock as long as they can control it and handle the funds." In the past few years there has been a remarkable change in the ownership of industry, a sort of decentralization of ownership, which has not sacrificed control. The first step after the organization of a business on a large scale or the promotion of a utility is to sell the stock among small investors. If the business is sound and successful, the profits are widely divided over the country. If it is not a success, then the loss falls on the individuals. In some instances, the promoters make liberal profits while the stockholders are left to hold empty sacks. The tendency to decentralize corporate ownership will probably continue. In fact, many of the larger utilities are systematically splitting their stock in small holdings as a matter of business and political policy. They feel that in this policy they are entrenching themselves against hostile legislation and building defenses against public ownership. It would be a wise man who would undertake to say what will be the outcome of present business tendencies towards decentralization. Movements of this sort are more easily started than stopped. There is a growing disposition among the holders of securities of all sorts to inquire more closely into matters of management than formerly. The enormous losses running into billions, that the holders of comparatively small blocks of securities have sustained tend to make them a little more critical than formerly. In the organization of these same stockholders there is danger that control will be lost and pass into the hands of factory or corporation committees. Who shall say that this is not the course on which industry is entering? All the Comforts of Home!
