The definitions are numbered to correspond with the numbers on the diagram. Any word defined in the text under "HORIZONTAL" will be given at its number, shown on the diagram, and will extend all the way across to the first black space to the right of that number. That is, the word must begin in the square that contains its identifying number, and extend as far as the white squares continue uninterruptedly. Any word defined under "VERTICAL" will also begin in the white space that contains its number, but will extend downward as far as the white spaces remain uninterruptedly. Either the mother of a family of little children or the housekeeper who gives a part of her time to business can reduce the amount of time spent at preparing meals appreciably by calling a fireless cooker into service. Radiators are put on the stove to heat and vegetables and meats are placed in their containers. This done, the cooker and its parts are adjusted. Then the housewife may concern herself with other duties about the home or attend a club meeting or party. The meal needs no further attention until time for removing from the cooker. The dishes prepared in it surpass in flavor and nutritive value those cooked by the usual methods. Cooking by means of a fireless is essentially the same as ordinary cooking. Foods may be stewed, broiled, baked, fried roasted or steamed. Vegetables meats, cereals, puddings and even pies, cakes and breads may be cooked satisfactorily in this way. Any of one's favorite recipes may be followed. There are only a few rules to be observed; the proper heating of the radiators, when to use water, the proper arrangement of the foods, the correct adjustment of the radiators and the amount of time to be given.
