DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS
The Lord bless thee, and keep thee. The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee. The Lord lift up His countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.—Numbers 6.24, 26.
If we say the darkness shall cover us, in the darkness as in the light our obligations are yet with us. We can not escape their power, nor fly from the presence. They are with us in this life, will be with us at its close; and in that scene of inconceivable solennity which lies yet farther onward, we shall find ourselves surrounded by the consciousness of duty, to pain us wherever it has been violated, and to console us so far as God may have given us grace to perform it.—Daniel Webster.
THE GOOD OLD DAYS
We mourn the age of chivalry, the good old romantic days when men placed themselves and their swords at the service of maidens in distress; when a man fought for lady-love, and so on. But times have changed, and fair damsels nowadays are either unworthy of knightly devotion or they no longer need it.
One night recently a man was walking along a dark street when he heard a girl scream. Like the knights of old, he ran to her rescue and was held up by two men with revolvers, while the fair screamer went through his pockets. Another young man, out walking with a lady, was accosted by a "hold-up" man and was about to submit to being "frisked" at the point of a revolver, when the girl began to scream lustily and beabor the robber with an umbrella, frightening him away.
So when you deplore the fact that men are no more chivalrous and knightly, remember women have changed, too.

SOUL OR BODY?
There are other sins which may be placed in the category of murder besides the actual taking of life. Hate is murder, and, though we may be able to conceal this emotion; and, though human courts take no cognizance of it, yet hatred does not lead to actual murder, we are told that "Whoever hateth his brother is a murderer."
The sin of ingratitude is a deadly sin, for it may kill the soul. The one who makes sacrifices for another and then finds himself cast off when sacrifice is no longer necessary may suffer more than if his life had been taken, for when incentive to live is gone, life is worthless. The parents who toil and sacrifice for their children when they are growing up and then in old age find themselves cast off must suffer tortures compared to which death is nothing.
Thought is all-powerful. Before condemning the thief and the chicken-urderer too strongly we should search our own hearts the day was and music by the compass conscience is a soft sofa-pillow for the soul.

GOOD—UNCOOKED SALAD VEGETABLES: (Continued)
SMALL BEETS, SMALL CARROTS, SMALL TURNIPS, SMALL PARSNIPS: If these vegetables are used as a salad, only the smallest should be selected. They should be prepared by washing with a vegetable brush, but never under any circumstances should they be scraped, as this destroys the vital part just under the skin. They may then be used in their whole state, or may be ground through a vegetable grinder.
These four vegetables contain a larger percentage of starch than any of the other salad vegetables which I have listed, and it wise to use only one of them at a meal, adding some other raw vegetable, such as lettuce, parsley or spinach. This will down the total amount of starch, and will be found to agree with the patient who is not in possession of a strong digestion, the new meat, if more than one of these vegetables is used, the amount raw starch, which is difficult to digest, will seriously retard digestive process.

COMMENTS of the PRESS
What Editors Are Saying
BETTERING THE HUMAN RACE—Riverside Press
Recently Dr. David Starr Jordan delivered an address on the subject of a better race. He practically took the ground that higher training is better than higher matter.
Dr. Jordan first paid his respects to war as the greatest waster of human capabilities and retarder of human progress the world knows. He said that the intellectuals of Oxford and the physically fit of the whole empire were sent into the trenches to be killed, while the scum of the London slums was left to continue the English race. That is not true alone of England. War takes the best of a nation, both physically and mentally, and the less fit are left to be progenitors of the next generation. It, of course, is a matter of mere speculation as to what poising the human race would now have reached had not war constantly from the beginning robbed human kind of the highest type of parenthood. War does more than the retarding of human progress, but this evil alone is enough to condemn it utterly.
Dr. Jordan was not enthusiastic on the matter of governmental restrictions upon marriage are parenthood. He said that love is a better guide than officialism in the matter of marriage. Natural selection may still be trusted to do a proper job of mating. What he laid stress upon as of more importance than trying to develop the human race along the lines of animal breeding was development along the line of education and training. The fundamental stock of this Nation, he said, is superior to that of any other. It is important what we do with it.
It is an indefenable right under the Constitution of the United States to be well born, to be born free and equal in the opportunity to advance and develop. It is the Nation's duty to see that his right is conserved, and that every boy and girl has the opportunity to develop, not only physically, but mentally and spiritually. As a Nation we shall make progress through right training of body, mind and spirit. If all our children are born into such conditions of development, we shall have eugenics in its highest form.
However, regardless of the relative importance of environment and heredity, it is not to be construed that Dr. Jordan opposes voluntary application of well tested principles of eugenics in building a better race. If a continually better race of individuals can be born into a continually bettered environment free from the curse of war and its killing of the most physically fit, progress in the upward course of humanity may be expected to be hastened.
The letter said in part:
