PUBLIC UTILITY PLAN UNDECIDED
SACRAMENTO. April 19 — The proposal of Senator Arthur H. Breed to declare the oil industry a public utility today was still far from settled. The constitutional amendment introduced by Breed will not be acted upon by the senate committee considering it until Monday.
While there was much debate on the measure at meeting of the senate committee on constitutional amendments last night, no vote was taken and action was postponed until the next meeting.
Senator Breed, in explaining the Bill, declared he was not attempt to persecute the oil companies for the part they have taken in opposition to his one cent increase in the gasoline tax. He stated that he believed the industry should be regulated by the railroad commission as to rates on the same basis as other industries of the state.
Charles K. Stevens, representing the Gen. Pet. Co. of Calif., was one of the leading spokesmen against Breed's proposal. He declared he did not believe the move necessary.
"If the state is to begin regulating the price of oil it will not be long before attempts will be made to have the state also regulate the price of timber and automobiles," Stevens declared.
"While I do not believe the larger companies would be greatly affected by the provisions of the amendment," Stevens said. "I am of the opinion a great hardship would be worked on the smaller companies, operating in the state."
Wallace Watson, representing the Kern-co. C. of C., also spoke against the bill. His main point was that while some companies, through geological conditions, were able to produce oil much cheaper than others, variance in the cost of production would render a difficult situation which might work hardships on the companies whose production cost was large.
RALPH BARTON, artist and caricaturist famous for his magazine covers, sketches, and for his work on the Chauve jouris curtains, has a strong sense of the ludicrous. One of his chief delights is to bring In Mary, his cook, to serve her own preparations at his studio suppers, for as Mary towers "a foot or two" above his head, according to Mr. Barton, the effect is somewhat戏剧ical.
Mr. Barton further asserts that Mary is far above any other culinary artist of color when it comes to an appeal to the palate. Her Butter Scotch Rice made over the electric studio stove, is unforgettable. For artistic effect, and for its property in helping to digest other ingredients, she adds gelatine.
Wash one-third cup rice as cook until nearly tender in a double boiler with two cups of milk scalded, and one-fourth teaspoonful salt. Meanwhile cook together in a shallow pan one cup of brown sugar and two tablespoons butter until it gets very dark brown, but not burnt. Add to the rice and milk and cook until the rice is tender and the caramal melted. Soak two tablespoons of gelatine in one-half cup water until it is so softened, and then dissolve it in one cup of hot milk. Strain into the cooked rice mixture and turn into a cold wet moisture.
WHAT EASTER MEANS
(By Asa H. Squier)
Easter means a rising up into newness of life. Back east where the ground is covered with snow and ice six months of the year and during such period all flowers and plant life lie cold and dormant. But about Easter time the green fields appear, the flowers soring up from their wintry beds, the birds return from the sunny south to sing their songs of gladness. All nature smiles at the change and there is seemingly a rising up into newness of life. Here in Edon of perpetual sunshine and flowers the Easter occasion is not so wonderfully changed. Yet the event that it heralds, the repreception of our Lord and Master Jesus Christ, is the same to Christians throughout the world. And it is in His name that we celebrate the day. He is the one perfect being, that lived here on earth in human form, and without sin, and whose example we may well try to follow and live.
Yes, Jesus has set us a splendid example of right living and eight doing, not only in the past but now, and every day of our lives. Like all systems of genuine Christian faith, we as Christians believe in God as a kind merciful and Just Father. The whole human race is His family. He will punish and reproof each individual for disobedience and wrong doing. He is all powerful nothing can escape his notice. He is abundantly able to control and carry on all his projects, and we have faith to believe, according to the right interpretation of His holy and sacred word, and the promises of his beloved Son Jesus Christ, that in his own good time. He will gather the entire human family together, into the borders of that spirit land, that beautiful home beyond.
He sent his Son into the world that the world through Him might be saved for God carries on his work through leaders and teachers. He is therefore looking to us dear friends, to aid Him in this glorious work of love. Jesus was the name given by the angel to Him who was born as the Christ. He is therefore called "Jesus." adopted this beautiful health festival and added to it a new greater significance? Is not a close analogy between life, death and resurrection in ture, and that of Jesus Christ, founder of Christianity. During Christ ministrations on earth, always strove to show his follys the beauties of the higher of the human soul. He taught them that the greatest joy in life is found in giving happiness well being to others, and the divine attributes he illustrated his own earthly life. But Jesus who called himself the Son God soon became the victim wicked men, and by them crucified. He was placed in tomb and mourned for death. Hone fled from the hearts of disciples and their lives were ed with doubt and gloom. It was a sad and bitter trial for the faithful followers. But not long were they left to group the dark. Three days of sadness and despair and Christ rose from the dead. The faithful loved woman, drew the Mary's back mourn their Lord and unbind body. As they approached to tomb in the dawn of that Easter morn, they wondered would roll away the stone them. But the Angels had been there ahead of them. Jesus was not in the tomb. He was by for Mary saw Him and spoke to her. Great joy filled their hearts; for He whom mourned as dead was alive; had burst the bonds which closed way leading from this world the next. And light from on his light of immortality shone through. That light has been shining from that day to this woe increasing radiance and briancy. This resurrection, coming back of a soul from grave is a token that all should rise from death and again. Easter therefore means we joy in a new life, in the blue assurance that our friends loved ones, who have died in body here, have passed out through death to life beyond. All will be given standing room at the shores of eternity, and

He sent his Son into the world that the world through Him might be saved for God carries on his work through leaders and teachers. He is therefore looking to us dear friends, to aid Him in this glorious work of love. Jesus was the name given by the angel to Him who was born as the Christ's. He is therefore called "Jesus," an son of Mary, and Christ is the promised Messiah. He was the one of whom the Lord by the mouth of his prophet said, He shall not fail, nor be discouraged till He have set judgment in the earth and the Isles shall wait for his law." Isa. 42-4, and again, "I will also give thee a light to the Gentiles that thou mayest be my salvation unto the ends of the earth." Im 49-6. Of no other being, whoever lived were such prophecies. We know that those prophecies were by the aid of divine imabation, and those expectations were sanctioned by the promises of Almighty God's. Hence can you wonder that the true Christian believes in the divinity of Jesus. He dwelt here on earth in the flesh, came into this world to do the work appointed by his Father. He took upon Himself our natures that being thus subjected to its influences he might know its powers and be able to present to us a visible and comprehensible life as our example.
"Jesus sald unt her, I am the resurrection and the life." John 11:25.
In the early day, many years ago, Easter was annually celebrated as a heathen Gestinal. Was held in honor of earth life. It was so held in the spring time to celebrate the breaking of the toy bonds of winter, which had seemed to hold nature in the thraldom of deaths. The significance of this early, annual festival was the renewal of life by the sun of life. It was a resurrection from death to a new life of the soul of the earth. Can we wonder that Christian's early light of immortality shines through that light has been shining from that day to this ever increasing radiance and beauty. This resurrection, coming back of a soul from death and living again, Easter therefore means we joy in a new life, in the blue assurance that our friends loved ones, who have died in body here, have passed sat through death to life beyond all will be given standing room in the shores of eternity, and they we shall meet them again all broken ties will be united. Pain is brief, joy hastilier death is strong but life stronger. We greet love's mite angel. Here is Easter ad door:
