OLINDA P.T.A. IN SUCCESSFUL PLAY A very enjoyable evening was spent on Thursday in the Olinda school Auditorium when "The Bean Town Choir was presented by the Community players of Olinda. The auditorium was packed to the outside doors and never has the community gut on a more successful entertainment. One hundred dollars was netted from the stage. The play will probably be given again in the near future. The program included: selection by Olinda school orchestra. Act. 1—Living room in Widow Wood's home. Act. 2—The next afternoon. Act. 3—Evening the concert. Scene 2—The surprise. Selection by Olinda Orchestra. Violin solo by Herman Thompson, Instrumental duets by Maynard and Jesse Scribner. Clayes and Mrs. Clayes are at Santa Barbara attending the annual convention of the State Hi School Principal's Ass'n. Credit is given the manual arts department on Prof. Van Der Veer for the county's exhibit at the National Orange show in San Bernardino by J. P. Ahborn, who has written the school his congratulations. The exhibit consisted of a reproduction of the Campanile of St. Mark's at Venice. Another successful performance of "The Ladies Speak at Last," a one-act play, was given by Miss Bickley's students yesterday before the Ebell club. Two one-act plays will be put on Friday in assembly—"6870 Berkeley Place," and "Room 85." The public is admitted at the usual nominal fee. Receipts will go to the scholarship fund. The performance will open round 11:30. The orchestra will play as usual under the direction of Prof. Joshua Williams. Hedge from 5 to 11 p.m. This new arrangement follows the departure of Mr. James Gay, former manager of the hotel, who with Mrs. Gay left April first for Porland, Ore. UNABLE TO PASS BILL OVER VETO SACRAMENTO, April 7 — First attempts to pass a bill over the governor's veto failed in the senate today. The test came on a bill introduced by Senator H. L. Dennett of Modesto, which was returned to the upper house yesterday by the chief executive. The measure would have permitted building and loan associations to invest 25 per cent of treasury assets in investment certificates of other similar organizations. The assembly today passed a bill appropriating $100,000 for the erection of a California state building at Reno in connection with the Nevada Transcontinental Highway Exposition to be held there in 1926. A bill appropriating $90,000 for the purchase of additional land for the San Francisco state teachers college was passed without a dissenting vote. Other appropriation bills passed by the lower house today were: A bill asking $100,000 for a roof on the state armory at Los Angeles. A similar measure was passed in the senate yesterday. A bill appropriating $2,500 for restoration and rebuilding of Fort Ross, Sonoma-co. The "Old Age Pension Bill" introduced by Senator Dan C. Murphy of San Francisco was passed by the upper house today without opposition. This bill provides a $25,000 appropriation to start the state in the old age pension system. Indigent persons over the age of 70 years would be provided with pensions of not less than $30 per month. A similar measure was endorsed by the assembly ways and means committee last night and reported back to the lower house with recommendations that it be passed. MOTHER PASSES Mrs. Sarah Frances Lewis, 79, mother of Honer W. Lewis, manager of the local J. C. Penny store, died last evening at the home of her son, 940 North Palm-st. Mrs. Lewis, whose husband passed on several years ago is survived by two sons, Homer W., of Anaheim, and Charles W. of Spokane, Wash., and a sister, Mrs. Lucetta Kirkpatrick, who lives near Peru, Ind. She was a native of Indiana, but had resided in California for ten years and in Anaheim five years. She was a member of the White Temple church and of the Sunday school class taught by Charles Eygabrood. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the chapel at Backs, Terry & Campbell, with Rev. J. A. Geissinger officiating. A quartet from the White Temple choir will sing. Burial will be in Loma Vista. The most economical little salesman is a Class Ad in this paper. NEW AUTO LAWS A measure by Senator Arthur H. Breed of Piedmont, making numerous changes in the Motor Vehicle Laws, was passed without a great deal of opposition by the senate today. One of the changes would prohibit the use of muffler cutouts on the public highways. An attempt to amend this measure to increase the speed limit from 35 to 40 miles an hour on the open highways was voted down. OPTOMETRISTS MEET The Orange-co Asn'n of Optometrists met last evening in Elks club with a dozen of the profession present. Anaheim was represented by Dr. Walter Blakeley and Dr. E. C. Kendrick. The next meeting will be held in Fullerton early in May. "Nerves" are merely a sympton; the malady itself is self-pity. At any rate it is a happy home if there is jelly on the piano keys. BABE RUTH HAS "FLU" COLLAPSE NEW YORK, April 7—Babe Ruth, the great Yankee slugger, collapsed at Asheville, N.C., today "from sheer exhaustion and another touch of the 'flu'", according to a special dispatch to the Evening World. The Babe, who has been allied for weeks arrived here from Knoxville, after a rough ride over the mountains. He had complained of headache and fever, and as he walked into the station he collapsed and fell into the arms of John Levi, the big Haskell Indian. The dispatch further adds that after the collapse the big boy kept muttering. "I want to go home to New York. I want to go home. I'll hire an airplane if Hug doesn't send me home."
