CIVILIZATION IS LOT OF DETAILS
LOS ANGELES, April 3—Balto, world famous dog-here, and his master, Gunnar Kaasen, agreed today that civilization is just a maze of unimportant details.
"It all seems strange here—the crowds, the buildings, the traffic—and the climate, it is no different," dechared Kaasen. "It's strange to Balto, too, and the other dogs. We must go back north soon."
The sturdy six-foot musher and his 12-dog team have come to the States from Alaska to receive the plaudits of a nation for their heroic dash to diphtheria-striking Nome. It is Kanaen's first glimpse of civilization since he left Norway 20 years ago for Alaska.
Both Balto and the musher were shy and ill at ease when admitting throbbing paid them public tribute on their arrival here. If no one else understood their feelings, they at least understood each other, and they showed it.
Balto, half fox and half dog, with iderizing red eyes and heavy black coat, merely sniffed indifferently when Mayor Cryer offered him the bone of the city. A bone means nothing to Balto. He eats frozen fish as a regular diet. The canine hero registered the same polite indifference when Clara Horton, screen actress, placed a collar of white roses around his neck.
Kanaen blushed heavily when Miss Horton kissed him, and remarked, "I was never treated like this before."
The viking usher feels sure the warm climate will not hurt his dogs, but he is equally certain they prefer the frozen north country to the Sunny Southland.
"I feed them frozen fish and that makes them feel more at home," he said. "Of course they can't be worked down here like they are up in the north country." "I call them Balto, Mackus."
Unusual Acting Witnessed In Senior Class Play Last Night
Several hundred Anaheim mothers and dads last night saw some of their problems, present, past and future, effectively portrayed at the Hi School Auditorium, when the senior play, "The Goose Hangs High," was given its opening performance.
In the catrie three acts there was scarcely a hitch and every member did excellent individual work, besides playing in well with his teammates. Miss Bickley, coach, has perhaps never turned out a more successful play.
Thru the assistance of various local shops, the living room of the Ingals home in which the action takes place was charmingly equipped.
It's impossible to pick out any one or two of the young people for special mention. Those who remember the debonair Clifford Tuber in the December vaudeville show in which he appeared as the perfect young gentleman, must have been amazed at him as the poised and serious Bernard Ingals, father of a family of three near-grownups.
Eunice Ingals, his wife, played by Lillian Deschner, was a wonderfully sweet old lady, whose sacrifices for her children finally bring their reward.
Grandmother Bradley, who provides a few thousands with which to purchase a partnership for her son-in-law in the floristic business, furnishes half the space of the play. Kathryn Monteney yohl makes the most of her opportunity in this role.
Evert Wells, as Elliott Kinberley, arrogant city councilman in his single appearance on the stage, and John Eden as Leo Day, another councilman equally chesty, both do striking work.
Sarah Fay as Julia Murdoch outspoken relative, and John Daly, Gretchen Holland and Phil Lip Bastian as the Ingals children, are all excellent.
The school orchestra under the direction of Joshua William enlivened the intermissions.
Mentlon should be made of the personnel of the stage staff as follows: Miss Dorothy Chalfier, stage director; Frank Sackett, stage manager; Bill Halter assistant; stage manager; Clyde Martin, electrician; Jesus Ocho properties man; and Miss Madeline Conover, in charge of make-up and costumes.
The second performance will be given tonight.
NEWS IN BRIEF
SAN FRANCISCO—The secret of his murderer's identity still locked in his brain, Dave Torres died here today. Torres, who refused to tell who shot him, is believed a victim of highjackings feud.
OAKLAND—Nine cities of the east bay utilities district continued their fight here today against torrs of San Francisco. The proposed building will cost almost $1,500,000.
MODESTO—Edward Warren 16. Modesto junior college student, was perhaps fatally hurt when the machine in which was riding was struck by a northbound Tidewater Southern Electric car this morning.
Kaasen blushed heavily when Miss Horton kissed him, and remarked, "I was never treated like this before."
The viking usher feels sure the warm climate will not hurt his dogs, but he is equally certain they prefer the frozen north country to the Sunny Southland.
"I feed them frozen fish and that makes them feel at home," he said. "Of course they can't be worked down here like they are up in the north country."
"I call them Balto, Mactuck, Cella, Tilly, You, Dilek, Dodge, Jume Blancie, Bill, Fox and Silva, and when I call them they stay called. They mind like model children, but they are my best friends. Balto is my pal."
Kaasen attituded in a plain black loose-fitting suit, appeared ill-attended to his luxurious quarters at the Biltmore hotel, but they were the tintest Los Angeles could afford. While talking to the interviewer he stood near the window eight floods above the street, watching the hurrying through below.
"I won't dare to cross the street alone for several days," he said. "With all of those automobile and street cars it is a wonder you don't kill more people than you do. Alaska is safer than this country."
Balto has been provided with quarters at the fashionable Lift-tore hotel also. The rest of the pack have luxurious kennels out on the movie lot.
The Alaskan will remain here about two weeks, until they complete a movie-thriller of their home expedition. Meanwhile press agents are arranging a vaudeville tour of the country, but Balto and Kaasen may decide to return to Alaska when the film contract in fulfilled.

DEATH OF WOMAN BAIS FOR SUIT
Asking $45,526 or damages because of the loss of their wife and mother, Rex K. Harris, manager of the Danz Music Company of Anaheim and his children, Alice Jean and Earnest appear as plaintiffs in a suit filed in the superior court at Santa Ana today against the Griffith company, paying contracting concern also of Anaheim.
Mrs. Alice Harris was riding in the rear seat of a machine driven by E. R. Ramdsale of Santa Ana when she was thrown against the top. She died several days later of a broken vertebrae of the neck.
The company, which was engaged in paving West Seventeenth-st., Santa Ana, to the Garden Grove highway, had placed a three-inch iron pipe across the latter road and this was covered by wod and dirt to permit traffic to cross, the Harris suit alleges.
At the time the Ramdsale car crossed it, however, the action contends, the incline was too sharp to permit care to cross it safely. The suit was filed by Attorney C. N. Mozley and L. A. West of Santa Ana.
