PAGE FOUR THE ORANGE COUNTY Plain Dealer An Independent Newspaper Issued Every Afternoon Except Sunday PAUL V. HESTER Editor and Publisher Subscription Rate—In Orange County... per month 50c Entered at the Postoffice at Anaheim, Calif., as second class matter DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS Then said Jesus, If ye continue in my word, them are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.—John 8.31-c2. God's way is often in the deep. Dark clouds are His chariot. He disappoints and whelms the soul in billows that seem for the time to have quenched every ray of light. Then we need the steady grasp of faith upon the unseen paternal Hand.—Owen Street. KINSHIP OF MAN SHOWN IN DISASTERS There is always an inspiring sequel to a great disaster. In the midst of the horrors of death and destruction that rises up manifestation of that part of men and women which no disaster can suppress—the spirit of sympathy and helpfulness. All men are brothers—all women are sisters, to the distressed. There is generous giving of money, supplies and labor to rescue the injured, to bury the dead, to provide food and shelter and to quicken the spirit of hope in the dependent, terrified victims of the catastrophe. It is inspiring to note how universal is the impulse, among men and women, to give aid to localities stricken by earthquake, tornado, fire on flood. It matters not as to the race of the stricken ones. It matters not how far away the scene of the disaster may be. Succor is forthcoming from the sincerity of generous hearts. The human race is advancing phenomenally. Its advance in science and the arts is amazing. So is its advance in intelligence. But more remarkable and more gratifying than all these forms of advancement is the progress that has been made, spiritually. There is more brotherly love in the world today than ever before. There is greater manifestation than ever before, of the spirit of the teachings of the Christ. There is greater yearning for universal peace; there is greater desire for social justice; there is a greater force of effort and influence, than ever before, to uplift humanity, to ameliorate its burdens, its misfortunes and its wrongs. Rhodes, District Attorney Wm. E. Rothe announced today. Mrs. Rhodes and her husband, Edward Rhodes, will be arrested on insanity warrants, however, the district attorney said. Today the investigation has failed to indicate any connection between the fatal branding of Schalow and the fact that Schalow's life was insured a few days prior to the burring, Rothe said. Inquiry or this aspect of the case will be vigorously pressed. OROVILLE, March 26. — The mental status of all persons who witnessed placing of "mystic, sacramental" brands on body of Herman R. Schalow, Bigga orchardist, in ceremony conducted by Assembly of God Church of Gridley, may be ordered immediately. Dist. Attr. Wm. Rothe declared today. Rothe said he planned this action following alleged confession of Mrs. Anne Rhodes, known as "roaring lion of puddah," that she applied red hot poker to her brother's body few days before he died in Oroville hospital. Rothe said he would either ask sanity comission to act in branding case or place entire matter before grand jury. At same time, Rothe said he might order Schalow's body be exhumed and autopsy performed. He said he considered this step after it was discovered dead man had his life insured for $2,000 with Los Angeles company. Mrs. Schalow was named beneficiary. According to district attorney, Mrs. Rhodes declared before she branded brother he had offered himself as "sacrifice to Holy Ghost," but said he did not expect to die as result of strange ceremonial. A "dance in nude," Mrs. Rhodes said, followed "branding party," at which woman applied flery poker to Schalow's head and body. COURT HOUSE DOINGS Bird V. Beebe was under court order today to refund vantage from property at Seal Beach, which house and lot he sought to have partitioned in a suit he brought against his wife, Mrs. Olga Beebe of Affleheim, tried yesterday. Superior Judge Z. B. West held that a deed he gave to Mrs. Beebe at the time of their estrangement, and subsequent decree, the wife save to their two children, should be binding as against any interest Beebe must claim. James H. Kew, Santa Ana resident who died February 22 at Glendale, left an estate valued at $45,000, according to a petition for administration on file today. Bulk of the estate, or $38,000, is in personal property. R. R. ANNOUNCEMENT Voters of Anaheim Union High School District: We learn by the press that a certain anonymous clique in Anaheim has been kind enough to furnish from the plenitude of its wisdom a candidate for High School Trustee from the Loara District, the idea evidently being that the people of Loara could not be trusted to handle their own affairs. This clique, all of whom we know, were advised weeks ago that a meeting would be called at Loara School to select a candidate, but it seems that did not suit the self-appointed booses. It being claimed that certain "business and professional" men constitute the anonymous committee, we would gently suggest that their proper function is to ply their respective avocations, and allow the people of Loara to handle their own affairs as they have been doing to their own satisfaction for lo these many years.
