DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS Love worketh no ill to his neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.—Romans 13:10. Ah, me! the golden fancies that have perished, And left behind but footprints of their cheer! Some autumn falls on every summer cherished; Each laughing day ends with a dewy tear! —Ernest W. Shurtleff. EARTHQUAKE IN EAST ALARMS The northeastern states of the United States and the south eastern provinces of Canada have been shaken by severe earthquake tremors. No material damage was done. There is nothing about the visitation about which to become especially alarmed. There is no excuse for exaggeration or misrepresentation. California will not turn tables on any interests or any locality that have exaggerated reports from this state and misrepresented conditions here. California accepts as literally true the news reports of responsible press associations. Because New York City and other cities of the East were shaken perceptibly, there will be no propaganda in this state to induce people to stay away from those Eastern cities or to come away from them because of earthquake perils. In the next five hundred years there may not be a single death from earthquake in the whole area east of the Mississippi River. And by the same token there may not be one death from that cause in the whole area west of the Mississippi. This is all in the hand of Nature's God. It is impressed, however, that earthquakes are not confined exclusively to certain areas of the earth's surface. There may be shocks anywhere, at any time. It behooves builders of great structures, therefore, to look carefully to construction, that there may be as much providing against damage from earthquake shock as possible. to induce people to stay away from those Eastern cities or to come away from them because of earthquake perils. Meanwhile, the world stands upon its everlasting foundations. "God's in His Heaven." He will not forsake the work of His hands. This planet will endure, as it has endured. And the forces of Nature will not overwhelm man or his works. Radio is one of the marvels of this age of phenomenal things. And it is in the infancy of its development. Greater things are coming. INVESTIGATE SCANDAL IN LEGISLATURE It is well that open hearings are being held at Sacramento on the charges of Chinese herb dealers and doctors that attempts were made to extort money from them to prevent the passage of the so-called Smith herb bill. The people should know the truth as to these scandalous charges. If there has been corruption, or attempted corrupting of legislators, the truth should be known and the guilty should suffer the consequences. Incidentally, the practise of lobbying for or against legislative measures should be discouraged. Rigorous regulation of lobbying is in order. The fountains of government must be kept pure. Every branch, department and bureau of government, in state capitals and in the Nation, must be kept free from bribery or corrupt or irregular practices of any kind. The guilty must be disgraced and punished, as the flagrancy of their guilt may warrant. The orange is making more gold for California than its gold mines. Congress, in other words, is indulging in considerable horse-play at President Coolidge's expense. DOES YOUR WATCH KEEP TIME? IF NOT, BRING IT TO US! Special Attention to Ladies' Wrist Watches E. C. In a distant field a party of men were undergoing instruction in entrenching work. To the sergeant commanding the squad they appeared as mere dots, and he decided that here was a very good test. Singling out a smart young man, the sergeant asked him for the number of men composing the entrenching party. Immediately came the answer: "Sixteen men and a sergeant, sir!" "Right. Doctors and good pharmacists know that Cod Liver Oil is full of vitalizing vitamins that make flesh, creates appetite, restores vigor, builds up the power to resist disease and chases away nervousness. But it's horrible tasting stuff and every day fewer people are taking it for doctors are prescribing and the people are fast learning that they can get better results with McCoy's Cod Liver Oil Compound Tablets, which Haying's Pharmacy, Jackson Drug Co., Orange Co. HEALTH & DIET ADVICE By Dr. Frank McOoy Author of "THE FAST WAY TO HEALTH" PROTEID FOOD (Continued) NOT GOOD HEART. This organ should not be used for food, because the muscles contain so much thickened blood on account of its being the last organ in the body to stop functioning. As the death of an animal draws near, the circulation stops in the extremities first, and then the other parts of the body die slowly, until circulation finally comes to an end in the heart organ and death ensue. This causes an accumulation of many more times the normal amount of poisons in the heart tissues, and there is no way of preparing this organ for food where these toxins can be eliminated. KIDNEY. This is one of the eliminative organs and is used in throwing out some of the worst poisons and toxic materials which the body has to deal with. At death, many of these impurities are retained in the kidney, rendering it an unwholesome organ for use as a food. You are, no doubt, familiar with the odor that comes from a Kidney stew, which is the same as the odor from the strongest urine, and is caused by the enormous excess of uric acid in the cooking kidney meat. LIVER. This organ is commonly used for food and is prepared by frying, and also by being mixed with other meat and ground into sausage. In any form in which it can be prepared it is very unwholesome food, containing a tremendous amount of billiary poisons and toxins. At death the liver is literally choked with these poisons, and they cannot be eliminated by any process of cooking with which I am familiar. German Boat Government—Corp. BEEBE The Arcturus, a war built wooden ship, Capt. William Beebe, commanding, which sailed from Tebo's Basin, foot of Twenty-third street, Brooklyn, recently is one of the strangest fishing expeditions ever known. With a large equipment of traps, hooks, nets and dredges, the Arcturus will visit the Sargasso Sea, a vast floating continent of seaweed that lies between Cuba and Africa in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Below the surface of the Sargasso Sea are strange monsters, whose like according to marine traditions has never been seen on sea or land. The scientific explanation of this is that millions of fish are caught in the net of seaweed and their decaying carcasses serve as carrion for undersea life, varieties of which exist in no other spot on the globe. These are queer phosphorescent creatures that flash and glimmer in the shadowed depths. Some are said to be illuminated with red, yellow and green lights like a Staten Island ferry boat. Octopuses 100 feet in diameter, capable of dragging a small vessel under the water, are said to roam this region. In ancient times the place was dreaded by sailors as a supernatural and haunted spot. It has never been thoroughly explored. The Arcturus will move slowly through the seaweed collecting specimens. The expedition is backed by the department of tropical research of the New York Zoological Society, Marshall Field, Harrison Williams, Vincent Astor, Henry D. Whiten and other wealthy men are financing the undertaking. Beebe was born at Brooklyn, N.Y., July 29, 1876. He took his B. S. degree at Columbia University in 1893 and for COMMENTS ON THE PRESS What Editors Are Saying EPOCHAL NEWS PROMISED—"acrameto Bee" Adolph S. Ochs, publisher of the New York Times, is quoted by the New York World, as saying in an address before the Pulitzer School of Journalism the other day: "I have heard that a great corporation is in possession of inventions (which have been demonstrated to be practical for general use), of so startling and epoch-making a character that the managers of the company stand agast in contemplation of the vast scrapping of existing machinery that must follow their introduction to general use." So it would seem that Ochs has the first chance to get for his paper one of the greatest pieces of news with in the possibilities of journalism. But now that the other metropolitan journals have been put on the scent, perhaps scores of "diggers" are working day and night in the effort to get at the secret. Think of the possible effect on Wall street and the stock market! Is it the General Electric Company, otherwise known as the Power Trust, that has the epoch-making invention? Or can it be the great United States Steel Corporation? Surely something definite will leak out before long, if there is really anything very big in hiding. Keep your eyes on the first page from day to day! GLEANINGS FROM THE BOOK OF LIFE THE TIE THAT BINDS Nature is no spendthrift, but takes the shortest way to her ends, Emerson observed. As the general says to his soldiers, "if you want a fort, build a fort," so nature makes every creature do its own work and get its living—is it planet, animal or tree. The planet makes itself. The animal cell makes itself—then what it wants. As soon as there is life, there is self-direction and absorbing and using of material. Life is freedom—life in the direct ratio of its amount. "When there is something to be done, the world knows how to get it done," Emerson wrote. "The vegetable eye makes leaf, perlearp, root, bark, or thorn, as the need is; "The first cell converts itself into stomach, mouth, nose or nail, according to the want; "The world throws its life into a hero or a shepherd, and puts him where he is wanted." Dante and Columbus were Italians, in their time; they would be Americans or Russians today. He took his B.S. degree at Columbia University in 1898, and for the remainder of that year, and the following took post graduate work. He has been honorary curator of ornithology of the New York Zoological Society since 1899; also director of the department of scientific research. He is a member of a number of American and foreign scientific societies. He is the author of numerous books on wild life, among them "Two Bird Lovers in Mexico," "The Bird," "Log of the Sun," "Our Search for a Wilderness," 'Tropical Wild Life,' 'Monograph of the Pheasants,' "World's End," Edge of the Jungle" and many scientific papers and monographs relating to birds and evolution.
