WEEKLY REVIEW OF OIL INDUSTRY
BY E. J. MUNGER
The discovery of two new oil sands and the addition of 5000 barrels of new production contributed duly materially to a better outlook for the Rosecrans field this week. The sands discovered are located in two distinct and separate zones. The deep sand zone found by E. J. Miley was perhaps the most important development feature the field has experienced since oil was first discovered at Rosecrans. Miley had the courage to kill a little producer at Athens No. 1 doing around 350-400 barrels at a depth of 4307 and put the same well down to 5238 feet and get a 1500-barrel well. The big production, according to Miley's engineers, is coming from 5034-5115 feet. The oil is 26 gravity and is coming clean.
In the completion of the San Joaquin Oil Co.'s No. 1 formerly the Perkins well, Paul Getty gave the northwest area a real surprise in a 1475 barrels well at a depth of 4341 feet. It is rather peculiar that no other well in the vicinity is picked up this sand. The Cresus Gasoline Co. drilling a test well one location east has passed this depth and failed to even find a trace of the sand that is yielding the big production for Paul Getty's well.
At 4700 feet, about 250 feet deeper than the Getty producer, the Sentinel Oil Co. completed a 1500-barrel well at Atheng No. 3. The oil produced by the Sentinel's well is running 37 gravity and the cut has decreased to less than 5 per cent. Atheng No. 3 gives the Sentinel Oil Co. the pioneer of the northwest area its first production in the new field.
Your Cross Word Puzzle
HOW TO SOLVE THE CROSS WORD PUZZLE
The way to solve the Cross Word Puzzle is to fill in the white squares of the diagram with the words which agree with the accompanying definitions. The definitions are numbered to correspond with the numbers on the diagram.
Any word defined in the text under "Horizontal" will begin at its number, shown on the diagram, and will extend all the way across to the first black space to the right of that number. That is, the word must begin in the square that contains its identifying number and extend as far as the white squares continue uninterruptedly.
Any word defined under "Vertical" will also begin in the white space that contains its number, but will extend downward as far as the white spaces remain uninterruptedly.
At 4700 feet, about 250 feet deeper than the Getty producer, the Sentinel Oil Co. completed a 1600-barrel well at Athena No. 3. The oil produced by the Sentinel's well is running 37 gravity and the cut has decreased to less than 5 per cent. Athena No. 3 gives the Sentinel Oil Co. the pioneer of the new west area its first production in the new field.
The Julian Petroleum Corporation brought in its No. 1 Athens at 4810 feet. The well failed to get a complete shut-off and a lot of water came along with the production. It appears now that it will be necessary to do some more cementing. The well made a good showing in spite of the water and showed that the production was there to be obtained.
The Standard Oil Co., testing out the extreme northwest section of the field, has a well down 6000 feet and has no showing to report. On the extreme southwest side of the field the Union Oil Co.'s Gordon has had a few slight showings and there is some doubts about it making good. These two wells appear to mark the limits of the south and east.
Culver City-Baldwin Hills has become a factor in the production of the Los Angeles Basin. The little field, less than three months old, now has seven wells producing and is contributing close to 1000 barrels daily. Thus far the production is being produced at a figure never before heard of in local oil circles. The wells run in depth from 1414 to 2500 and the production ranges from 125 barrels to 250 barrels. These projects can be completed in 30 days and at a cost of approximately one-fourth the regular cost of wells drilled at Santa Fe Springs, Torrance, Rosecrans, or Dominguez. One of the recent and very splendid example of low cost of production is the Pan-American Petroleum Co.'s Santous producer. The well was drilled to 1414 feet, set at 12½ casing string at 1189, and finished up with a 10-inch oil string and a 4-inch for truing. This well is pumping 200 barrels of 16 gravity oil.
The last days of development work at Torrance seems to be in the hands of the General Petroleum Corporation. The G. P.'s Pegler property offsetting the Consolidated Mutual's Campbell lease has ten wells under way. Two completions made last week netted a 125 and a 200-barrel well. Pogni No. 1 finished at 3825 is the 125-barrel well, and No. 4 drilled to 3812 is the 200-barrel producer. Both wells are making 16 gravity oil: The Selby-Root Oil Co. completed a long and successful drilling campaign at Torrance with the putting on production of

No. 5, a recent Standard Oil Co., completion, started off at 50 barrels.
At Brog the Union Off Co.'s More No. 6 fell short of expectations at 1000 barrels. Morse No. 6 is a deep sand test well; it was drilled to 4600 feet and had a lot of good looking sand accordingly to produce from it failed to flow and had to be put on pump. Latest reports from the well put the production at 50 barrels.
At Mar Vista (Ocean Park Heights) the Union Oil Co.started a well drilling on the Newlin property that is scheduled to open the next oil field for the Los Angeles Basin. The Union well marks possible location of another structure northeast of the Baldwin Hills. On account of the tremendous success the Union Oil Co.had with wildcat operations the past two years all adjoinning property near the Mar Vista well
work at Torrance seems to be in the hands of the General Petroleum Corporation. The G. P.'s Peggy property affecting the Consolidated Mutual's Campbell lease has ten wells under way. Two completions made last week netted a 125 and a 200-barrel well. Pogni No. 1 finished at 3825 is the 125-barrel well, and No. 4 drilled to 3812 is the 200-barrel producer. Both wells are making 18 gravity oil. The Selby-Root Oil Co. completed a long and successful drilling campaign at Torrance with the putting on production of well No. 10. The tenth producer went on at 2798 feet, a 100-barrel producer.
With the Standard Oil Co.'s Howard & Smith No. 1 getting a good oil showing at 4250, the outlook for a real extension of the old Montebello field looks quite plausible. The Standard's test is being watched with a lot of interest upon it depends a lot for the future of one of the oldest oil fields in Southern California.
That the Standard Oil Co. is far from being through at Huntington Beach and is of the opinion that the old field still has a lot of oil to be developed is evidenced by the fact that the company is starting no less than 5 new wells. The new wells are on the Huntington Beach property, Farnsworth and Bolsa Gun club leases. Thompson
