WTAM PRESENTS OPERATIC STAR
Since the ice was broken by two world famous opera singers in New York, the lure of the radio microphone is proving irresistible to others. WTAM, the Willard Storage Battery Company station, at Cleveland, introduced another to the radio world this week at the regular evening concert.
Mme Helena Gagliasso, star of the first magnitude offered only three selections on her first broadcasting appearance, as follows: "Una Voce Poco Fu," from the "Burher of Sevilla," by Rossini; "The Last Rose of Summer," from "Martha," and "Ah Non Glunge," from Bellini's "Sonnambula."
Mme Gagliasso is a colatura soprano and one of the very few American born women ever to attain fame as an operatic star and to be acclaimed as such in the European capitals. Her early training was in this country, but her voice attracted so much attention that she was induced to study in Italy under operatit masters there.
It was while studying in Chicago that she met her husband who was an instructor of music at the university. Before her marriage she was Helen Wait. Her father, Frank W. Wait, is now mayor of Sturgis, Mich.
Mme Gagliasso made her first bid for fame in a concert tour of Europe, and recognition was instantaneous. After that came operatic engagements, and last year an operatic tour of South America with long engagements in Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Santiago and Lima.
Her appearance at WTAM was on the eve of her departure for Mexico City, where she will appear at the Arbeu Theatre during the "Official Season." Her services were obtained by WTAM through W. P. Baranowski, export manager of the Willard Storage Battery Company who met the Gagliassos during a recent tour of South America.
DINOSAUR TRACKS 10,000,000 YEARS OLD
Announcement by the government that dinosaur tracks dating back 10,000,000 years have been found on the Navajo Indian reservation in Arizona, recalls to motorists of this section that this country recently was charted by the A.C.S.C.
These tracks are said to be the first of the sort found in the Rocky Mountain area and consequently are of great scientific interest. They occur in a thin layer of rock about seven miles from Tuba City, reached from the Grand Canyon over the Navahop road. The footprints measured 18 inches in length and 13 inches in width. The stride of the ancient animal is shown to be 52 inches in length.
MEALY BUG HAS BEEN HARD HIT
Elimination throughout the county of the dreaded mealy bug as serious foe of the orange and lemon tree has been accomplished, according to Manager G.W. Sandlands of the Anabelm Orange & Lemon Ass'n. At the same time Manager Sandilands made it clear that the pest hadn't been entirely eradicated and must still be watched.
Burlay wrapped about the crotch or trunk of the tree will furnish a nesting place for both the bug and the cryptolamus — better known as "crypts"—its natural foe, which has been responsible for its death. Spring will show definitely how much of the pest there is left.
This is the bug that the association managers themselves despaired of conquering some two year ago.
The red spider is plentiful ain former years and a good hard rain is required to clean it off the trees, says Sandilands, although a lime and sulphur spray will eliminate it if necessary.
The mealy bug reminds Sandilands of the cottony cushion scale Whys' Wherefores Of New Reflector
Almost every day of the year the motorist puts his life, trust and faith in his lights. He must also put his car away at sun-down. His lights must show him the way. How many or what percentage of the motorists that drive our nighways every night can really see all of the road ahead of their cars? "We believe," stated Claude West of West Bros., official state headlight adjustation. "That fully two-thirds of all drivers are unable to see all the road from 200 to 300 feet ahead of their car. If one cannot see this distance they are surely asking chances. One should be able to see any object, however small it might be 'down the road.' He should have a safe, strong driving light which illuminates he sides as well as the center of the road, a light that is safe on he boulevard and safe on the wisting mountain grade.
Many headlight devices produce an uneven field of illumination with dangerous shadows. One should be able to see well on dark pavement or on white concrete.
Many people have said to our adjusters: "Some people have such right lights that I am unable to see the road on account of the terrible glare into my eyes until several seconds after they have passed." It is not overly 'bright' lights that glare but uncontrolled or undistorted lights." stated West.
"We have a device that will illuminate all of the dangers on light driving," he declared. "A device that will do all the things that I have stated should be done to make night driving a pleasure and not a game of chance" as the Motor Vehicle Department of this state declares that thousands of accidents occur each year, due to insufficient road illumination.
This device is called the Hamino floodlight reflector, product made in Los Angeles and far superior to any other device that I know of upon market today. This reflector encodes an entirely new and advanced conception in the coat

ON-GRADES; THRU TRAFFIC, OIL TEST
A new economy record has been made with the "Motor Mates." Associated gasoline and Cycol motor oil, by Sergeant Cole, Canadian self-styled "iron man." In his recent 120-hour endurance run.
Handeuffed to the wheel of his Overland automobile, he drove five days and as many nights through the traffic of the business section of San Francisco, up hills and down, without rest, living on a diet of milk and raw eggs.
In commenting upon the new record established, Sergeant Cole said, "Driving in city traffic is conceded by automotive authorities to be the most rigid test possible to demonstrate the dependability of a gasoline and motor oil."
The continuous operation of my motor for 120 hours," continued Cole, "positively proves the dependability of Cycol and convinces me that it does not break down or thin out under the most severe engine heat. It maintained an oil light piston seal and played an important part in the trouble-free performance of my Overland car during this terrific grind.
"Should motor trouble have developed, I would have lost my opportunity to establish this record for endurance. Realizing this, I took no chances and used Cycol motor oil.
The sustained quality of Associated gasoline also played a helpful part in my success and I am frank to admit that in all my years of driving I have yet to find gasoline that will give a better balance of the qualities so absolutely necessary to make possible the record established.
"I have always found that the high quality of Associated gasoline has been sustained ever since it was placed on the market years ago. It gives what every motorist should expect from a gasoline, all 'round satisfaction. It never failed to enable me to start quickly and pick up speed when the 'go' signal in traffic was shown. Neither did it fail to provide vigorous power to carry me over the road."

GAS TAX OF OVER 2 CENTS EXCEPTION
In view of the proposals of different boards of county supervisors in California and members of the State Highway Commission to increase the gasoline tax, the policy of other states is of interest.
Of the 49 states in the Union, there are 14 which have no gasoline tax at all, leaving 35 which use this method of raising funds. Eleven of the 35, or nearly one-third, have a tax of one cent a gallon. The two cent tax has been fixed in 14 states, and nine of the others have a higher tax than two cents. Utah assesses two and one-half cents a gallon. Seven states charge three cents, and Arkansas heads the list for heavy taxation of the motor traveller and is alone among all the states with a four cent tax.

Speedometer, dashlight, foot throttle, cowl lights, nickel-plated radiator, disk clutch, duco finish etc. make this car one among 100.
The Miner Co. is keeping its showrooms open late to permit prospects to see the car.

Lubrication Questions Answered by ASSOCIATED OIL COMPANY
Staff of Automotive Engineers
Question: Should the oil in the transmission be changed periodically, and how is this best done?
Answer: Yes, it is just as important to change this oil at regular intervals as it is to change the motor oil. However, it need not be done as often as the oil is changed in the motor. Every two thousand miles would be a good average time at which this change should be made.
Remove the plug from the bottom of the transmission and allow all the oil to drain out. Then wash out thoroughly with kerosene. In the absence of kerosene, water may be used, hot water preferably. If a good pressure is available a strong stream of cold water will serve to clean it out. After thorrowing cleaning, refill the transmission with gear oil.
Question: Do the vapors arising from heating motor oil act as a lubricant?
Answer: The vapors have a considerable lubricating value and they are depended upon in some makes of cars to lubricate valve guides and stems. The theory is also advanced that the vapors assist in no small way in lubricating the cylinder walls, as they are capable of finding their way into small clearances. It must be understood that they are not the principal factor in good lubrication, but rather a very small factor. They are, however, in no way detriment, but rather assist the oil in its function of lubricating.
