YOUR CROSS WORD PUZZLE
HOW TO SOLVE THE CROSS WORD PUZZLE
The way to solve the Cross Word Puzzle is to fill in the white squares of the diagram with the words which agree with the accompanying definitions. The definitions are numbered to correspond with the numbers on the diagram.
Any word defined in the text under "HORIZONTAL" will begin at its number, shown on the diagram, and will extend all the way across to the first black space to the right of that number. That is, the word must begin in the square that contains its identifying number, and extend as far as the white squares continue uninterruptedly.
Any word defined under "VERTICAL" will also begin in the white space that contains its number, but will extend downward as far as the white spaces remain uninterruptedly.
Naturalist Decries Game Annihilation
Certain species of wild ducks are extinct, others are on the way to extinction, and all will practically vanish in ten years if they present yearly rate of annihilation continues. Dr. William Hornaday, noted naturalist and defender of wild life, said recently. Dr. Hornaday is director of the New York Zoological Park and chairman of the Permian Wild Life Protection Fund.
"Wild Ducks and Geese doomed to pass, and to become practically unknown to future generations of Americans as duck hunting will become as solete as buffalo hunting, unless some means are taken to slow their rate of destruction." Hornaday continued. "They are slaughtered as they migrate, in enormous numbers in the face of six localities where the white visible supply of the United States masses together in winters for food and shelter."
"A great species of game has become so nearly extinct in various states that all hunting them is prohibited. Official bill No. 1444 of the Department of Agriculture, entitled "Game Law of 1924-25," gives a list average from 10 to 40 animals in each state now no longer open to hunting. That list is the grave stakes of vanished fame and sport." Dr. Hornaday. "Implements methods for the destruction of wild game have reached a pertinence unknown in the past. Because of the automobile, hundreds of hunters are able to concentrate at any pond or lake where diving light, coming from long distances. I have heard of hunts traveling five hundred miles kill ducks and geese. The same mobile has doubled the intake..."

THE VALUE OF FRIENDSHIP
Have you ever thought of the importance of friendship in the education of men?
"Friendship will make a man honest; it will make him a hero; it will make him a saint," Thoreau opined.
All the abuses which are the object of reform with the philanthropist, the statesman, and the housekeeper, are unconsciously amended in the intercourse of friends.
Thoreau defined a friend as one who incessantly pays us the compliment of expecting—from all the virtues, and who can appreciate them in us.
"It takes two to speak the truth—one to speak, and another to hear. How can we treat with magnamity more wood and stone? If we dealt only with the false and dishonest, we should at last forget how to speak the truth.
"In our daily intercourse with men, our nobler faculties are dormant and suffered to rust. None will pay us the compliment to expect noleness from us. We ask our neighbor to suffer himself to be dealt with truly, sincerely, nobly; but he answers no by his deafness. He does not even hear this prayer. He says practically—I will be content if you treat me as no better than I should be, as deceitful, mean, dishonest and selfish."
For the most part we are contented so to deal and to be dealt with, and we do not think that for the mass of men there is any truer, nobler relation possible. A man may have good neighbors, called, and acquaintances, and even companions, wife, parents, brothers, sisters, children, who meet himself and one another on this ground only.
The pump gun and automatic shotgun still further cut down chances of the game. The bag limit, of 25 ducks per day, 29 states, lasting over a season three to three and one month is much too large. We galizes the killing of more 2000 ducks by any hunter season. No family of order size can reasonably eat 25 birds in a single day, and there is no son to believe that a large ber of the ducks spoil. Lice sold in New York state give legal permission to kill 000 times as many creatures there are in the whole world. While no hunter shoots the number of ducks every day the legal limit is often reached the winter feeding grounds turn, ducks have already vanished the sky, and in on the hunter is lucky if he get or two.
"The wholesale slaughter ducks in the few sections where save in the regions they congregate in winter, the buffalo which for a seemed to withstand the ennui inroads made upon the herds, so our wild ducks will tinue to be found in fairly full numbers for a time. But time will come to a close last plentiful spots will be ped up. The birds will be so scattered as to be praised extinct. With their dim numbers they will not be as watch out for their enemies search for food as effective before."
Wild life had never so formidable enemies to wipe as today, and it is unable list the mighty army of salion hunters directed against I believe our migratory birds under the present destruction will reach the ing point in a decade from The gradual limitation on winter feeding grounds has to concentrate them more tha

A man may have good neighbors, so called, and acquaintances, and even companions, wife, parents, brothers, sisters, children, who meet himself and one another on this ground only.
"The state does not demand justice of its members, but thinks that it succeeds very well with the least degree of it, hardly more than rogues practice; and so do the family and the neighborhood."
What is commonly called friendships even, is only a little more honor among rogues."
The books for young people say a great deal about the SELECTION of friends; it is because they really have nothing to say about FRIENDS. They mean associates and confidants merely. Friendship takes place between those who have an affinity for one another, and is a perfectly natural and invitable result. No professions nor advances will prevail.
