COUPLE HERE ON 50,000 MILE WALK
Some folks even grumble when they find it necessary to walk from home to town, or reverse.
Never be it said that R. E. Baxter and his wife call it a hard old world when a little walking is on the program.
Walking is one thing they revel in, and right now after having taken a little counter of 35,422 miles, they are stopping in Anaheim.
Mr. and Mrs. Baxter aren't simply walking for the pleasure of walking, although to them it is fun, but they are proving very conclusively that some of Uncle Sam's best doctors are wrong, decidedly wrong in their medical forecasts.
When the war ended Mr. Baxter's health went to pieces. He was placed in a government hospital, where it was declared by physicians that only one chance in a million was his for regaining his health, and that was—walking.
Having spent better than two years in France fighting the kaiser army Baxter wasn't going to let illness win a victory over him, so early in 1821, he and his wife bring packs on their backs and wipe Washington, D.C., as a starting point, began a walking tour that according to schedule will not and until 50,000 miles have passed under their trudging feet.
The rigors of a 20-degree-below-zero battle in Washington state during the last cold spell fixed the strength of the plucky woman, and now that they are in Southern California they may remain for a fortnight until her strength has fully returned.
Then, if they follow their original plans they will walk to San Pedro and board a liner for the other side of the world to try their feet on foreign highways until the 50,000-mile mark has been reached.
DEMONSTRATE WIRE BRACING OF TREES
Wire bracing of walnut trees will be featured at two demonstrations held under the auspices of the Agricultural Extension Service and the Walnut Department of the Farm Bureau. Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2 p.m., and Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2 p.m. The Tuesday demonstration will be held at the place of Lambert and Wells, McFadden-st, corner of Lyon. The Wednesday demonstration will be given at the place of W. H. Stivers, between La Habra and Fullerton on the state highway; across the street from D. J. Bastanchury.
The purpose of these meetings will be to show proper methods of wire-bracing large walnut trees that are subject to breaking, particularly in those groves that have been recently thinned for the purpose of admitting more light.
The heavy winds of the past season have shown the necessity of properly bracing some of the weaker trees.
In house heating, humidity is of greater importance than temperature.
States presidents, movie stars, English royalty, prize fighters, and whoever else ranks a place in the spotlight of public affairs.
Hair-raising experiences are related by the trudging couple.
They have been in two cloudbursts in Texas and Idaho; were chased by timber wolves in the Canadian Rockies and forced to spend a day in a tree until rescued by lumbermen; met up with a forest fire in Quebec and had to jump into a lake to escape death; were lost all night in a Louisiana swamp; were held up by bandits in old Mexico who took all their belongings and left Mr. Baxter with only a pair of oversalls for apparel; spent two weeks in the Mojave desert where they ran out of fod and water for three days; ran into a sandstorm in New Mexico that lasted five days, which so

So far they have been in every state of the union, every province in Canada, Cuba and Mexico. When they started Baxter weighed 117 pounds; now he gives his weight as 158. Mrs. Baxfer went up on the scale from 113 to 125 pounds.
Each town they visit is recorded in a book carried by Baxter. He difficulty, however, says Mr. Baxcalls at the postoffice and has the ter, as they have met up with a cancellation stamp placed in the number of amusing incidents. One book as evidence they have been of the incidents that seems amusing now was when they were in signatures of many notables of vited to ride by a motorist, who the world, including former Unified after they had covered 25 miles, chased by timber wolves in the Canadian Rockies and forced to spend a day in a tree until rescued by lumbermen; met up with a forest fire in Quebec and had to jump into a lake to escape death; were lost all night in a Louisiana swamp; were held up by bandits in old Mexico who took all their belongings and left Mr. Baxter with only a pair of overalls for apparel; spent two weeks in the Mojave desert where they ran out of fod and water for three days; ran into a sandstorm in New Mexico that lasted five days, which so cut Mr. Baxter's face and eyes that he has been forced to wear glasses since; traveled thru the Dakota, Minnesota and other northern states with the mercury slumped down to 21 degrees below zero.
Not all has been hardship and difficult, however, says Mr. Baxcalls at the postoffice and has the ter, as they have met up with a cancellation stamp placed in the number of amusing incidents. Flight to Hawaii to Be Part of Greatest U.S. Naval Maneuvers
ROUTES OF THE PROPOSED FLIGHT
U.S. naval aviators will span the Pacific from San Francisco to Hawaii, a distance of 2089 miles, in a non-stop flight, as a part of the greatest maneuvers ever held by the American navy. The purpose of the flight will be to determine the feasibility of raising a Hawaiian siege by air assistance from home forces. The combined United States fleet will play the pivotal role in attacking the islands. The maneuvers will be staged under the direction of Admiral Robert E. Coontz, commander of the U.S. Navy's Pacific Fleet.

After the flight to Hawaii the aviators hope to "jump" from Honolulu to Dutch Harbor, Unalaska, another 2,000 miles.
A gun on the pair and stole their possessions. Air record day's bike is 49½ which they made in 12 hours 30 minutes. Their average is 5 hours of daily walking, never being themselves to become tired. In summer they sleep out not so in winter. They stand rule never to ask for rides nor never to refuse one when it is offered. Every three miles they walk entitles them to a five-minute rest. Mr. Baxter carries an 80-pound pack, while his comrade in hiking carries about 30 pounds.
The globe trotters hope to complete their jaunt in about 18 more months.
WEEKLY REVIEW OF OIL INDUSTRY
By E. J. MUNGER
One of the best wells of the week at Athens-Rosecrans was put on production by E. J. Milley's organization the Pacific Petroleum Corporation. Pacific Petroleum No. 2 completed at a depth of 4963 feet started off at 1200 barrels and is making a 35 gravity product. The well is not only the best of the Pacific Petroleum's group but is one of the top notch producers of the Rosecrans Area.
The Associated Oil Co. sprung a little surprise out on the northeast area of the Rosecrans District by getting the Brockley well on production. The Brockley was drilled to 5003 feet and extends the northeast front of the field about a quarter of a mile. With the Standard Oil Co.'s Cowan below the 5800 mark and no oil to-date the outlook for this section of the field was not particularly bright.
Development work on the northwest section of the Athens district it appears is going to hinge pretty strongly on the outcome or the Shell Co.'s Leonis well. The Leonis has passed 5100 and todate has had nothing of encouragement to offer in the way of gas or oil showings.
At 6194 feet the Union had what looked like a very good oil showing in the Gordon well. The showing, however, was on any temporary one and quickly disappeared. Drilling now is past the 6300 mark and the well is not showing anything of importance. It would appear that the Union's Gordon well is making the limits of the southwest area of Rosecrans.
Domingues ushered in a big week for new production. The production/increase was started by the Shell Co. with a 600 barrel well at Manuel No. 2. The Manuel producer was completed at 4258 and is making 30.5 gravity oil. The Shell's producer was followed by a much bigger one on the Associated Oil Co.'s Holly-De-Francis property. Holly De-Francis No. 6 completed at a depth of 435 feet is a 2600 barrel well ahead with its old White test well, Home No. 21.
21 well is scheduled to new deep sand production region where some of the ifornia oil was foundduced. Drilling is good feet and the well has herber of good showings.
New interest continues with developments in the Richfield district. A deep sand test well wears good showing and it bears that the oil field be doing things soon.
Oil Co. has some 200 ft oil in its Graham-well drilled to 5575, showings fully warranted of a new developmentthe-field. The General sand test.

Domingues ushered in a big week for new production. The production increase was started by the Shell Co. with a 600 barrel well at Manuel No. 2. The Manuel producer was completed at 4258 and is making 26.5 gravity oil. The Shell's producer was followed by a much bigger one on the Associated Oil Co.'s Holly-De-Francis property, Holly De-Francis No. 8 completed at a depth of 435 feet is a 2600 barrel well, making a 29 gravity product. The Associated has brought in nothing but big wells on this famous little De-Francis property. The holding is only a 50 acre plot and today is producing more oil per acre than any other lease in the Domingues District.
Torrance closed the week with a production average of 43,000 barrels. New production was added to the field's output with a 125 barrel well on the Carson property by the Genera Petroleum, a 120 barrel well by the LeMoin Investment Co. at Torrance No. 2, and a well of similar capacity by the Standard Oil Company on the Marble Fee property.
The deep sand situation at Torrance seems to stand unchanged. The Chanslor-Canfield failed to find anything in its deep Francis well drilled to 6538 and plugging back has not met with any more success. The Shell Company's Kettler 2 at 5273 tdd not show any indications of oil and plugging back to 4560 not anything additional to offer. The Laura J Oil Co.'s No. 1 the only hope of the field has been on a pump production test for two weeks and makes a lot of water and a little oil. It is the intention to keep the well on the pump for some little time and see if it is not possible to exhaust the water. The encouraging feature is that the water is fresh and not salt water.
Huntington Beach's northwest test well, the Standard Oil's Bolsa Gun club No. 20 at almost 5000 feet is not showing any oil and the situation appears a bit serious. A rather good showing was noted at 4200 but since the showings have not been encouraging and the out look for a nocean front extension of the Huntington Beach field is not looked upon with a great deal of favor.
The Standard Oil Co. is going appear that the Union's Gordon well is making the limits of the southwest area of Rosecrans.

FAMILY WASHING ABSOLUTELY FREE
Any woman in Anaheim who telephones 926 this week will have her family washing and ironing done absolutely free, according to S. C. Lovering, manager of the Washer Wilson Co. here.
"No, I'm not making this offer to make good any election bets, either," Lovering explained, adding that the scheme was solely for advertising purposes.
"All I want," he continued, "is a chance to show Anaheim women what my washing machines and ironing machines will do. I'll gladly send an employee with a washer and ironer to any home in the city, and the family laundry will be finished absolutely free of obligation.
"I want every housewife in Anaheim to see how pleasant her washday would be if our machines were used. Of course we don't expect to sell a machine wherever we give these free demonstrations, but we do expect to gain a great number of hoo-ters for Washer Wilson products."

CONFERENCE ENDS SHIP COMPETITION
TOKYO, Feb. 8. — The work of the Washington conference has put an end to that competition in capital ships which might have by now developed into a disagreeable international situation." Baron Kijuro Shidehara, minister of foreign affairs, declared today on the third anniversary of the Washington arms conference.
"The conference proved highly beneficial to all parties and also founded simplicion regarding the acts and intentions of Japan in China and elsewhere have now been finally removed," declared the minister.
"Japan's sincerity has been made manifest to her most critical critics.
"In the Pacific a cloud of unrest which was once gathered there has given way to an atmosphere of peace, friendship and mutual co-operation.
"The conference will have always a strong abiding place in the annals of mankind because a new spirit was born there and introduced into the warjaded world—a spirit of reason, courage, tolerance and sympathy.
"It is only necessary to go forward in the same sensible frame of mind to secure greater economic arrangements, and better international relations for all.
The minister expressed the hope that the nine power treaty would soon be ratified.

A CAUSE OF WOMEN'S ILLS
Women Often Think They Have Heart Trouble, Indigestion, Nervous Prostration, etc., When It's simply Iron Starvation of the Blood
Many women believe they are weak and nervous as a result of age, worry and overwork; they think that their disturbed digestion, headaches, heart palpitation, shortness of breath, pain across the back, etc., are due to some serious disease instead of the real cause—iron starvation of the blood. This is proven by the fact that when many of these same women take organic iron for a while all their alarming symptoms quickly disappear and they become strong, robust and healthy. Iron is absolutely necessary to enable your blood to change food into living cells and tissue. Without it nothing you eat does you the proper amount of good—you do not get the strength out of it.
If you are not strong and well do not wait until you go all to pieces and collapse in a state of nervous prostration, but take organic iron—Nuxated Iron—at once. But be sure it's organic iron and not metallic iron which people usually take and which is made merely by the action of strong acids on small pieces of iron. Organic NUXATED IRON is like the iron in your blood and like the iron in spinach, lentils and apples and it often increases the bodily and mental vigor of weak, wornout women in two weeks' time.
Beware of substitutes. Look for the word "Nuxated" on every package and the letters NJ, on every tablet. Four money will be refunded by the manufacturer if you do not obtain perfectly satisfactory results. At all druggines.

What about the BOOZE PARTIES at Washington, D.C.? Why are 10,000 children in the public schools using drugs? Why are the penal institutions filled to overflowing with our boys and girls?
Why are there 1,000,000 insane in the United States? Why are there 20,000 school children in New York City with heart trouble? How about a prison sentence with loss of citizenship for rockless auto drivers?
What are 50 per cent of our high school girls doing? Why is 75 per cent of the crime in the United States committed between the ages of 16 and 22?
