MILITARY AREA AT SAND CAVE
CAVE CITY, Ky., Feb. 5 — All efforts to rescue Floyd Collins by means of the tortuous twisted passage into Sand cave in a pocket of which he has lain imprisoned by a boulder for six days, were abandoned here shortly after 5 o'clock.
Under orders from Gen. H. H. Denhardt, commandant of the military area established at Sand Cave the tunnel thru which Collins entered was closed and sealed and work of sinking a two foot shaft to the spot where it has been estimated Collins lies, was started immediately.
CAVE CITY, Ky., Feb. 5 — Dirty, muddy and shaking from exhaustion, Johnny Geralds, pal of Floyd Collins in many cave adventures, this morning stood on the little alim-covered plateau under over-hanging rocks which form the archway of the entrance to Sand cave where Collins has been trapped for more than 140 hours, and gave his verdict.
"I've gone in there for the last time," he said slowly, carefully, as if perhaps he had rehearsed that speech after it had haunted his mind as he picked his way, squirming almost prostrate thru the fortuous passage from the squeeze" to the mouth. "It's no use. I've had hope up to now, but the rock and mud is falling now faster than we can clear it out. Each time I go in the walls and roof look worse. There is more debris filling the passage now than there was before we cleared it all away yesterday morning. Geralds bowed his head as the icy breath of the cave beached over the plateau. He moved over within a circle of light cast by an electric bulb, flickering merrily in the black darkness.
"Floyd is getting weaker," he continued in the same measured tones. "He couldn't talk to me this time. While I was in there trying to make him answer me."
SHORTRIDGE URGES WATERSHED BILL
The following telegram from Senator Shortridge received today indicates that his efforts to have the Clarke-McNary bill amended so as to provide for protection of watershed cover is being favorably received. Should Senator Shortridge succeed in having his bill adopted it would mean that all cover on watersheds of streams from which water is secured for domestic and irrigation purposes would have equal protection with timber land:
"I arranged for hearing this morning before our senate committee on agriculture and forestry on my watershed bill stop. Acting Forester Sherman prepared and favored bill with certain amendments which appeared to meet also with approval of committee. I am today reintroducing amended bill less general in scope but giving everything required to meet your needs. In view of favorable attitude of both departments and apparently favorable attitude of committee I am hopeful early and favorable results.
"SAMUEL M. SHORTRIDGE."
A man is known by the promises he keeps.
continued:
"When I first went in to Floyd. I was sure he could be released. And I believe now that If I could have cut those first days and could have had three good men with me, he would be out safely today.
"He's been caught in caves like this before and we often talked and laughed about it.
"Why even early yesterday he laughed when I read him a telegram from a Chicago theatrical booking agency which offered him $350 a week to appear on the vaudeville stage when he is free.
"But now it's different. If you could get in there as I have been you'd know what I mean.
"You can go along all right until you come to the first 'squeeze' but from then on only a rat could increase of U.S." "DEBS" AT COURTS
LONDON, Feb. 5 — The number of American debutantes who will be presented at this season's royal courts will be larger than that last year, it is reliably reported by court circles.
To counter-balance this threat will be fewer English and Dominican debutantes presented.
Many manSIONS have already been taken by debutantes' parent in anticipation of the round of social engagements that usually precede and follow a presentation at court. Mrs. Peter Kerr-Smith formerly Miss Maude Simpson, New York, has taken Lowden House, in the fashionable Belgian Square district, and is to give many parties. Her daughter is be a 1925 debutante. Miss Edith Lowther, daughter of Mrs. All Lowther, and granddaughter. Mr. Atherton Blight, of Philadelphia, is another American debutante who will be presented.
This season's courts will be held without the assistance of the Douglas Dawson, who for many years has been the State Chamberlain.
His job was to see that every thing went off without a hitch and he might better be called King's Stage Manager. He certainly retired because of ill-heard and the fact that "he seemed to losing his grip on things."
In preparation for the usual strenuous round of social dances and courts expected this year fashionable London is now engaged in rejuvenating itself.
Popular nursing homes are full of pale ladies who are putting with weeks of agony so that they can face the season with equanimity and a smile. "Floyd is getting weaker," he continued in the same measured tones. "He couldn't talk to me this time. While I was in there trying to make him answer me, mud and rock were falling constantly. It's on his body now, and I can't get there to move it."
In moments when I was lying there resting, I could hear the crack of the rock, breaking up above and the inecessant boom, boom, boom of heavy rock falling to great depths somewhere out beyond in the darkness. It was terrible.
"R-r-rip. The walls and roof and floor go. And the sound echoes and re-echoes throut the passage. Then comes a rumble, terrifying there in the darkness. My hair seemed to stand on end and I'd close my eyes, thinking 'this is the end.' And then the final dull boom and then the whole thing over again.
"It may not be hopeless, I wouldn't want to say that, but—and he paused to look around him. 'I don't think I'll go in there again. Perhaps when I get rested, I'll feel differently, but now'—he looked toward the mouth of the cave—"well I think he's in there forever."
After another pause, Geralds

In preparation for the usual strenuous round of socials, dance and courts expected this year fashionable London is now engaged in rejuvenating itself.
Popular nursing homes are free of pale ladies who are putting with weeks of agony so that they can face the season with equanimity and a smile. One well-known society matron has withdrawn to a nursing home for a month have new eyelashes sewn on, which is reported that the craze "rejuvenation" is even spread to the younger element, who finds the strain of a London season very wearying and conducive to the "old age is creeping on" appearance.
The new Countess of Berkely formerly Mrs. Lloyd Powell, Boston, who married Lord Berkeley two months ago, is making her first visit to Berkeley, the Dulc country seat and one of the most famous castles in the West Country.
She has just bought a beautiful palace on the Grand Canal, Venice, which she is filling with priceless art treasures.
Ankle muffs are the latest craze here.
They are worn with low shoes, which produce very ankles in London's weather. Muffs are after the style of mitten, but they are trimmed with colored fur. Slim ankles are in pensable, however, if milady wants to be able to wear them elegantly.

PHARMACY STUDENT CAUSES TWO DEATHS
COLUMBUS, Ohio, Feb. 5.—The possibility that distribution of strychnine among Chicago University students, which seemingly resututed in the death of two students and illness of four others,
might have been due to an unintentional mistake on the part of some pharmacy student loomed here today.
Dean Claire A. Dye of the College of Pharmacy today announced he had discovered a bottle containing strychnine on a shelf in the dispensary in the university campus. Previous to this discovery, Dr. Dye had voiced belief that all the strychnine in his department was intact.

the Union Pacific is distributing 30,000 copies of a booklet entitled "Southern California," which is filled with interesting illustrations and descriptive matter.
Missions, orange groves, gardens and streets in fine residential sections of Los Angeles and Pasadena, Long Beach, Catalina, the beaches, Santa Barbara, San Diego, etc., are beautifully pictured or touched on.

CONFIDENCE
D. W. THOMAS,
Confidence is the scale that marks the degree of true worth in civilization. Confidence unerringly denotes the true character of an individual life. Confidence can only be earned by sincerity, truthfulness and absolute honesty; any departure from these fundamental principles of right spells failure, while a loyal and faithful adherence to them is always the sure reward of success in every walk of life, and every human endeavor.
Notable Example
The Danz Piano Co. of Anaheim, under the direction of Mr. Louis Danz, has won a high and gratifying position in the esteem and regard of the Piano Industries of America, by its most approved policy of retailing high grade pianos—no name stands higher—for that reason the writer of this compliment was instructed to assist Mr. Louis Danz in the distribution of a large stock of high grade quality pianos, grands and players at the annual demonstration of starting cut prices with five of America's most notable piano factories participating.

My personal interviews with the great throngs of piano buyers crowding this store daily during this sale is my unquestioned authority for my statement herein. I have never in all my forty years experience in selling pianos all over the United States witnessed a more striking, conclusive and spontaneous evidence of a community's complete confidence in a piano house than it has been my pleasure to have seen here with the Danz Piano Co. of Anaheim, and while it is a compliment to Mr. Louis Danz, its president, I will say that it is equally a compliment to Anaheim and Orange County to have as its home a piano house so estimable and clean cut as the Danz Piano Co.

REPORTS DEMPSEY
WEDS IN SAN DIEGO
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 5, 1925
Friends of Jack Dempsey, heavy weight champion, and Estelle Taylor, film actress and Dempsey's bride-to-be were speculating today whether or not the champion and actress had gone to Tia Juana to be married.
The speculation started today, it was learned, when the pair, accompanied by Dempsey's mother, left for San Diego, where reservations were made for them at the Coronado hotel.
Joe Dempsey, Jack's brother, denied reports of any contemplated marriage at the little Mexican town and said it was only a pleasure trip.
