Farmers Must Control Distribution "I believe I am safe in saying that no country in the civilized world has permitted its agricultural industry to sink into as low estate as has the United States," said Benjamin F. Yoakum, railroad financier, in praising the Curtis-Aswell bill, now before congress. As Yoakum explains it, the chief purpose of the bill is to authorize a closely knit economic and commercial organization of American farmers to be formed under a federal charter and to function as a national organization without any interference from the government or any of its agencies. "Although in the matter of production we are still the world's greatest agricultural country, at the same time our agricultural industry is harder pressed financially than can be assorted of the agricultural industry of any other country," continues Yoakum. A Grave Problem "I know I am on sound ground when I add that because of this paradoxical condition the United States today is faced by the gravest economical problem that is vexing the statesmanship of any other country. "The cause is wholly due to the fact that our statemanship has for more than a generation neglected agriculture while fostering carefully every other of our great industries. It has failed utterly to respond with constructive legislation and administration to the constantly growing demands of agriculture to be kept abreast of modern economic and commercial progress and methods. "Because of this neglect American agriculture today presents the grotesque spectacle of a great industry being pauperized at the production and while piling up huge profits at the distribution end. Production and distribution are twin factors of commerce. They are the Shamese twins of modern business. The death of one involves the death of the other." OFFER LOW PRICE ON LUCKY STRIKES Having been especially stocked with Lucky Strike cigarettes in tins of 100, local tobacco merchants are conducting special sales of this package in co-operation with the American Tobacco Co., manufacturers of this brand. The manufacturer offers Lucky Strikes in this of 100 for the actual price of the cigarettes themselves, the company paying the United States tax. Thus the package costs but 45 cents instead of the normal price of 75 cents. The special sale price is limited, however, to the present stocks of these packages. As soon as retailers sell their present supplies of Lucky Strike 100s the regular price will automatically become effective. BUY CAFETERIA Miss Elizabeth Laws, until recently connected with the West End cafeteria, and Charles Moore, her partner here, have purchased the American cafeteria, formerly the Copper Kettle cafe, in Fullerton, and will completely alter its interior and change its name to the Copper Kettle cafeteria. Miss Laws this week purchased a handsome Buick sedan of the Motor Sales Co. 10 NEW OIL WELLS Oil field operations reported the week ending Jan. 24 show 10 new wells started, as compared with 18 previous week. BREAKFAST—Small dish of cottage cheese, stewed raisins. LUNCH—One pint of lemon milk. DINNER—Roast veal cooked string beans, raw carrots, jello. Take your regular long walks and exercise before retiring at night. Enema if required of one quart of warm water. RICIPES OF FOOD ADVISED ABOVE WHICH HAVE NOT BEEN GIVEN BEFORE: LEMON MILK—This is a kind of sour milk or substitute for buttermilk, made by adding the juice from one-half to one or even two lemons to a pint of milk, and shaking the lemon juice and milk together vigorously. An egg-beater may be used in beating the mixture up, but the simplest way to prepare this lemon milk at home is probably to put the pint of milk in a quart bottle and then add the strained lemon juice in any quantity desired to suit the taste. Put the cap on the milk bottle and shake vigorously, churning it up and down to mix the milk and lemon together. This mixture tastes different than any other sour milk that you have ever used, and is relished by almost everyone. This must be mixed fresh each time you use it, as the curd and whey will separate after a time if not taken when prepared. ROAST VEAL—This meat should be roasted the same as beef without adding any seasoning or using any gravies. JELL-O—Jello is a mixture 10 NEW OIL WELLS Oil field operations reported the week ending Jan. 24 show 10 new wells started, as compared with 18 previous week. "Why Buy Tin?" A Southern California Product. Facts About Taxes on Cigarettes To the general public, we believe it will be surprising to learn that nearly half of what they pay for cigarettes goes to the government for taxes. The internal revenue stamp on a package of twenty Lucky Strike cigarettes costs you six cents. On a 75c tin of one hundred the revenue stamp costs you thirty cents. So nearly one-half of what you pay for cigarettes is spent by you for taxes. This is certainly the heaviest tax on an article of daily and universal consumption. The Tobacco Industry and Taxes The aggregate tax paid by the tobacco business is with one exception, income taxes, the largest item of internal revenue the federal government receives. Last (fiscal) year it amounted to $309,014,050.84. Of this enormous amount of money the cigarette industry paid $182,715,735.93, or nearly two-thirds of the total tax paid by the entire tobacco business. We believe you will appreciate that when nearly fifty cents of every dollar paid by you for cigarettes goes to the government, you must receive in cigarettes a value in return for your money that is rarely given in any commodity. That the public appreciates this great value is shown by the enormous increase in the consumption of cigarettes.
