YOUR CROSS WORD PUZZLE
HOW TO SOLVE THE CROSS WORD PUZZLE
The way to solve the Cross Word Puzzle is to fill in the white squares of the diagram with the words which agree with the accompanying definitions. The definitions are numbered to correspond with the numbers on the diagram.
Any word defined in the text under "HORIZONTAL" will be given at its number, shown on the diagram, and will extend all the way across to the first black space to the right of that number. That is, the word must begin in the square that contains its identifying number, and extend as far as the white squares continue uninterruptedly.
Any word defined under "VERTICAL" will also begin in the white space that contains its number, but will extend downward as far as the white spaces remain uninterruptedly.

YESTERDAY'S PUZZLE ANSWERED
BANANA SQUASH IS NEW CREATION
SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 29—California has scored again with a new horticultural product, it was announced here today.
This time it is a member of the squash family, which has been dubbed the banana squash.
Who discovered it is a mystery, but it is fast gaining headway as a product of the fertile San Joaquin valley. Great quantities of the new squash are being shipped into San Francisco from Turleok and other points in that vicinity.
The new vegetable has the shape, appearance and flavor of a banana, hence its name. When cooked and served it has the appearance of a sweet potato.

What is the hardest task in the world?
To think, was the answer given by Emerson.
"We say, I will walk abroad and the truth will take form and clearness to me. We go forth but cannot find it. It seems as we needed only the stillness and composed attitude of the librarian to raise the thought. But we come in, and are as far from as at first. Then, in a moment, certain wandering light appears and is the distinction, the principle, we wanted.
"But the oracle comes because we had previously laid siege to the shrine. It seems as if the law the intellect resembled that in nature by which the heart no draws in, then hurls out the bloom—the law of undulation."
In thinking, as in everything else, you must persevere.
Every mind has its own method. The differences between men in natural endowment are significant in comparison with the common wealth. Do you think the porter and the street-sweep have no antecedents; no experience no wonders for you? The wallis erude minds are scrawled all over with facts, with thoughts.
Emerson observes that every man, in the degree in which he has wit and culture, finds has a rosity inflamed concerning the modes of living and thinking of other men, and especially of the ways we have never subdued in the drills school education.
The difference between person is not in wisdom but in art.
"I knew a person who always deferred to me, who seeing him for writing, fancied that experiences were superior; while I saw that his experiences were good as mine," Emerson writes.
"Give them to me and I would make the same use of them; hold the old; he holds the new; he habit of tackling together the old and the new which he does not use to exercise."
This may hold in the great ample Perhaps, if we show meet Shakespeare, or Goethe, should not be conscious of a great inferiority; no, but of great equality—only that he possessed a skill of using, of classifying his facts, which we lack.
For not withstanding our utter incapacity to produce anything like

FREIGHTER LOSES
RUDDER OFF PLA
SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 23—
The freighter Chincha, en route from San Francisco to New York, lost her rudder off the Florida coast today according to word received by the marine department of the C. of C. A tug from Key West came to the Chincha's assistance.
DEFENDANT BREAKS DOWN DURING TRIAL
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 29—Zane R. Sothern, on trial here for his life for having shot E. R. Mack, theatrical promoter, broke down and wept on the witness stand today when he detailed to the jury the fury that seized him when he saw his young wife sitting beside Mack in Mack's office, the scene of the shooting. Many persons in the courtroom wept with Sothern, but his "dapper" wife, for whose love Sothern declared he killed Mack, listened coldly and dispassionately to the fervid recital.
LEAPS TO DEATH
BUFFALO, N.Y., Jan. 29—"God and everyone forgive me, for I, Mr. Nicholas Iverson, know not whence I go or what I do."
Leaving a card bearing these words on the sidewalk near Prospect Park Point this afternoon, a man believed to be Nicholas Iverson, New York bottling works proprietor, mounted the guard rail and leaped to death over Niagara Falls.
