DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS

MORE EMPLOYMENT IS IN PROSPECT
The year 1925 bids fair to be a period of encouragement
for men seeking work. Employment conditions are better and
prospects are bright for active demand for labor throughout the
year. The United States Employment Service gives this report. The conclusions are drawn from official reports from
district offices in all parts of the country. There is improvement in employment conditions in every state in the Union.
In the West, agricultural conditions are such as to insure normal volume of labor. In the great industrial centers, factory and mill operations are more active, or promise to be more active.
Conditions of this kind reflect prosperity. With labor well employed, at good wages, pay-rolls put immense total sums into general circulation and give healthy tone to business and industry.
Nature is a stern mother to those who transgress her laws. She punishes with a rigorous hand. The only safe course is to obey the laws of Nature, and thus avoid the good master's chastisings.

OIL FOUND IN ALASKA IS PROMISING
Alaska is promising another form of rich development. Oil discoveries have been made at Coal Harbor, in the southern part of the Alaskan peninsula. The Standard Oil Company is drilling a test well, which is now down 3200 feet. The oil sand is just below this depth, it is said. It is believed that from oil Alaska will realize another great accession to its developed riches.
Once regarded as a hopeless barren and inhospitable wilderness, Alaska has developed into one of the richest regions, in natural resources, in the western Hemisphere. Besides minerals, it has extensive forests. Its fisheries are important. And its agricultural possibilities are of sufficient magnitude to be considered worth while. Furthermore Alaska is becoming popular as a summer resort and travel to that far Northland is increasing steadily during the summer season.

What do they mean by "western coffee"?
They mean that superb beverage that gave the West its reputation as the home of coffee-excellence. They mean Hills Bros. Red Can Coffee, pride of the coffee-loving West, toast of millions from Puget Sound to the Mississippi.
Break the vacuum seal of a tin of Hills Bros. Inhale that sense-thrilling bouquet! Brew a cup and taste that wonderful flavor! Any wonder Hills Bros. is The Recognized Standard of coffee-quality? And that flavor is sealed for keeps in vacuum. Hills Bros. Coffee is economical to use.

The victim of tuberculosis
who wastes his funds “chasing a cure” in the west, too often finds only bitter disappointment. Under intelligent management, his chances are far better at home.
With an airy porch, a comfortable bed, a Jersey cow and a dozen laying hens, tuberculosis can be cured anywhere, regardless of altitude or aridity.
An old man was asked what he did when he bowed his head in church so reverently just before the services began.
“Well,” replied the old man,
“that’s a fair question an’ I’ll give you a fair answer—I don’t know what other folks do, but I always count forty myself.”
LINES FROM "MAUD"
Go not, happy day,
From the shining fields,
Go not, happy day,
Till the maiden yields.
Rosy is the West,
Rosy is the South,
Roses are her cheeks,
And a rose her mouth.
When the happy Yes,
Falters from her lips,
Pass and blush the news
O’er the blowing ships,
Over blowing seas,
Over seas at rest.
Pass the happy news,
Blush it thro’ the West;
Till the red man dances
By his red cedar tree,
And the red man’s babe
Leaps, beyond the sea.
Blush from West to East.
Blush from East to West,
Till the West is East.
Blush it thro’ the West.
Rosy is the West
Rosy is the South,
Roses are her cheeks,
And a rose her mouth.

DINNER STORIES
A workingman got a job at a coal mine siding, running wagons down an incline. There was only a sleeper at the bottom to stop the wagons, so the boss told him to be careful and keep the brake on. On the third day four wagons went down at a terrific speed and jumped over the sleeper into the canal below.
The boss saw all that happened from his office window, and came rushing out, with wrathful face. The man forestalled the remarks of the enraged employer:
“You needn’t come grumbling at me,” he announced. “I ain't working for you.”
The old lady came out of a half dose as the train approached a station.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
QUESTION: Mrs. E. H. P. writes: Please print in your Health Advice Column a full menu for baby, ten months old, everything he could have without harm. Also could he instead of Dextri Maltose to sweeten milk preparation?
QUESTION: Menu suggested for children from breast nursing to two years: At six, nine a.m., twelve noon, three and six four to six ounces of raw cow's milk, each feeding to be by one or two teaspoonfuls of orange juice. The milk is sucked through a nipple, if possible. No feeding atcept warm water, it desired. Or as an alternative the at six and ten a.m., two and six p.m., take five ounces ounce milk, preceding each feeding by one or two teal of orange juice as above. If any other food is added be child has reached the age of two, it should only be cooked thy vegetables. Small portions of meat or starchy food a child who is using milk will often bring serious digesurbances. It is not necessary for child to have any sweet-milk.
QUESTION: Mrs. F. O. P. writes: I have become quite inter-your HEALTH AND DIET ADVICE. I am taking the diet and now could you tell me how to reduce the bust. It one take a tub bath, during the orange diet?
QUESTION: After the orange juice fast, use a non-starchy diet for physical culture exercises to reduce the bust. This is really good exercise; Try lifting with stress, imaginary objection; also try to pull down the ceiling, as it were, keep muscles rigid. WHAT MY NEIGHBOR SAYS
Is Of Interest to Anaheim Folks
When one has had the misfortune to suffer from backache, headaches, dizziness, urinary disorders and other kidneyills—and has found relief from all this sickness and suffering, that person's advice is of untold value to friends and neighbors. The following case is only one of many thousands, but it is that of an Anaheim resident. Who could ask for a better example?
Mrs. R. Long, 311 N. Emily St. says: "I could hardly get dressed mornings because of the severe pain which struck me in my back. I had pains all over my body and felt worn out and had no energy. I had headaches and dizzy spells, too. Doan's Pills from Mulnaxix's Drug Store helped me, removing the backache and making me better in every way."
Over three years later, Mrs. Long said: "I have had no need for Doan's in some time but recommend them at every opportunity."

ASK SUPERVISIONS TO STATE PLANS
SACRAMENTO, Jan. 16. Preceiving his request with the declaration that "as supervisors you are close touch with the people and position to know what they want," Gov. Richardson today appeared before the annual convention of the county supervisors association of California and urged that the organization submit a report to the legislature outlining its policy with regard to the continuation of highway work in the state.
"I do not want to hold a 'big kick' over the people," the governor asserted. "But as supervisors you have the opportunity to fund public sentiment and make known your findings to legislators."

A DREAM TRIP TO MARS
"When I arrived on that planet," Flammarion writes, as if he had just returned, "it was about midday on its central meridian. I noticed two small moons revolving rapidly in their sky, and I alighted on the slope of a mountain overlooking a distant sea. The sea was shallow and full of water plants. The panorama reminded me of which one sees from the terrace of Nice Observatory, and I seemed to see a Mediterranean of calm water of a dark bluish green color. But it was a different element, and I saw that the plants were of a species unknown on Earth.
"Airy navies consisting of a sort of bird-fishes glided through the atmosphere, and I soon found the inhabitants of this celestial territory have received by natural evolution the enviable privilege of flying through the air, and that their method of locomotion is particularly aviation. Gravity is feeble on the surface of the planet, and hence the density of beings and objects on that planet is much less than it is with us.
Engineering science has for centuries reached a high degree of perfection. They have carried out immense works, incomparably superior to those achieved on our planet in the last century, and they have transformed their globe by gigantic operations which earthly astonomers are just beginning to appreciate by means of the telescope.
"One may easily understand indeed, that that world should be more advanced than ours, because it is more ancient chronologically, and because, being smaller than our globe, it has cooled down more rapidly and has run through the phases of organic evolution at a greater rate.
" Its years are nearly twice as long as ours, in the proportion of 365 to 687. While we count 37 years on Earth, the Martian counts only 20, and a man of 79 years on Earth, is only 40 Martian years old. Its condition of habitability, its climate and meteorology, its days and nights are analogous to ours.
" Even from where we are we can observe its continents, its polar snows, which melt in the spring, its canals, which also change with the seasons, its humid plains periodically varied by vegetation, its clouds, generally very light, but dense toward the polar regions, its mists in the mornings and especially in the evening, above all, the perpetual changes, incomparably more intense than those of the Earth's surface, in a word, all those manifestations of an activity greater than that of our own home of the present day."
