BIG DECLINE IN
OIL PRODUCTION
The production of oil in California in 1924 was 230,045,000 barrels according to American Petroleum Institute. This is 23,683,595 barrels less than in 1923.
An analysis of the increases and decreases in the various parts of the state is of value in showing the effect of decline just following the flush period of some fields, partly offset by the development of new fields and the resumption of closed-in production in some of the older fields.
The greatest declines were in the Santa Fe Springs, Huntington Beach and Long Beach fields, which produced 78,964,000 barrels less in 1924 than in 1923, distributed as follows: Santa Fe Springs, 52,385,000; Huntington Beach, 16,383,000; Long Beach, 8,716,000.
The decline was partly offset by an increase of 45,283,000 barrels in other fields, the fields of the San Joaquin valley producing 19,677,000 barrels more in 1924, both from new wells and from wells shut down during all or part of 1923; Torrance and the new fields Dominguez and Rosecrans contributing increased production as follows: Torrance 14,377,000 barrels; Dominguez 6,623,000 barrels; Rosecrans 620,000 barrels; the Coyote Hills field, practically shut down during part of 1923, contributing 3,206,000 barrels more in 1924 than in 1923; and miscellaneous 780,000 barrels.
Oil field operations reported week ending Jan. 10, show 19 new wells started, same as previous week; three in Torrance, four in Dominguez, three in Rosecrans, one in Huntington Beach; one in Whittier, one in Riverside-co; one in Ventura-co; three in Kern-co; one in Tulare-co; and one in Coalinga field. The total new wells this year is 28, compared with 58 at same date last year.
Tests of water shut-off 24, compared with 21 previous week. The yearly total to date, 45; total to same date last year, 49.
Deepening or redrilling jobs 21, compared with 11 previous week. Total to date this year, 32; total to same date last year, 24.
ORANGE-CO. MEN IN BIRD BANDING ASS'N.
With Orange-co. represented in its membership the Western Bird Banding Ass'n has been organized for the study and advancement of ornithology by means of the banding of birds.
Temporary officers elected arc: J. Engene Law, Altadena, president; Wright Pearce, Claremont, vice-president; Harlan H. Edwards Altadena, secretary and Harold Michener, Pasadena business manager.
This association has been organized for the purpose of drawing to gather into one organization workers in all the western states of the United States and provinces of Canada. Since the birds of the west travel approximately north and south from Alaska to Mexico, the problems of their migration can best be studied by a unification of this entire region.
By means of bird banding or the attaching of a tiny aluminum band to the bird's lee, and the recapture of the bird from time to time study is made of the daily habits and travels of wild birds, of the routes taken by the birds in migration and of their length of life. This work is carried on in co-operation with the U.S. Biological survey, Washington, D.C., where complete records are kept of every numbered band that has been attached to a bird, together with a complete history of each bird from the time it is first banded.
Active and associate members of this association are limited to those holding federal and state bird banding permits, and have banded at least 25 birds. Other classes of membership are provided for those interested in the purposes of the organization.
Much valuable scientific data has been collected in North America by banding. Approximately 100,000 birds have already been banded. A common term, banded as Eastern Rock, Maine. July 8, 1918, was found in August, 1917 on the Niger River, Delta, South Nigeria. West Africa.
Those interested in the work of bird banding and desire to affiliate themselves with the Western Bird Banding Ass'n should write Mrs. Harlan H. Edwards, Secy. R. 2 Box 629, Pasadena, California.

MURDER NEAR HOME OF FAMOUS AUTHOR
CROWBOROUGH, Eng., Jan. 16.
An Ebbie scene was enacted not far from the home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle famous author, early today when detectives from Scotland Yard dug up the body of Elsie Cameron, pretty young London stenographer who was murdered and her body buried on a farm.
The girl's mother collapsed when the body was found.
Following the unearthing of the remains, Young Norman Thorne, prosperous young farmers to whom the girl was engaged, was formally charged with her murder.
The 26 years of the girl's life had been a succession of love tragedies, police revealed. In every case where she fell in love she was in victim of unrequited love, detectives said. She left London Dec. 5, to visit at the Thorne farm.
"I will not return until I am married," she told her parents.
SLIGHT CAPTAIN IN PROMOTIONS
WASHINGTON, Jan. 16. — In the face of senatorial threats to block the promotion, Pres. Coolidge has "passed over" Captain J. K. Robison, the ranking officer of his grade in the navy, and promoted a number of other captains over his head.
Captain Robison's name figured prominently in the senate's investigation of the Doheny oil leases, it being brought out among other things, that he, as chief of the bureau of engineering at the department, approved the Pearl Harbor contract negotiated by Doheny with Albert F. Fall.

CHARGES ATTACK ON PUBLIC OWNERSHIP
SACRAMENTO, Jan. 16. — A constitutional amendment described by members of the Progressive group in the legislature as an attack upon public ownership indirectly, and a direct effort to hinder and embarrass municipal and other public undertakings, was introduced in the assembly today by Assemblyman S. C. Hartranft of Fullerton.
The amendment proposes to tax the gross earnings of publicly owned utilities on the same basis as privately owned utilities are now taxed by the state.
If approved, the measure would place a state tax on the earnings of the San Francisco municipal railway, the power developed and sold by the Hetch-Hetchy project, the Los Angeles publicly owned power system and other similar enterprises.
A companion measure to Hartranft's constitutional amendment was introduced in the senate by Sen. F. J. Powers of Eagleville.
