SOCIETY
PYTHIAN ORDER
ENACTS RITES
IN OPEN LODGE:
FULLFILLING a promise for a highly interesting evening at open installation of Pythian Sisters temple, the many guests were royally entertained last night when the beautiful rites were observed. The hall was decorated artistically with ferns and each station was adorned with flowers in colors appropriate to its degree.
Mrs. Amy Talbott was installing officer, with Mrs. Clara Wilson as grand manager, Mrs. Verna Press, grand senior, assisting. Every officer installed was presented with a bouquet of flowers, the small Miss Velma Kerr and Master Jack Bowman performing the pretty courtesy of presentation. Officers for the coming year are: Mrs. Maude Sangrue, executive chief; Mrs. Pauline Marion, executive junior; Mrs. Elsie Armbrust, manager; Mrs. Ethel Idlor, mistress of records and correspondence; Mrs. Lillian Davis, mistress of records and seals; Mrs. Nina Hell, protector; Mrs. Amanda Dumke, outer guard.
Miss Dorothy Winters in a whistling solo, with her sister, Miss Florence, at the piano; Helen and Ashton Reinert, plano duet; Mrs. Pare Kern Schulz, readings, and a fraternal drill by the degree staff, provided a very entertaining program.
Refreshments and dancing were the final pleasures of the evening.
W.H.M.S. Meeting
A regional meeting of the Women's Home Missionary society of the Southern California conference, held in Hollywood drew First 1925 B-P Luncheon Business and Professional women met in weekly luncheon today, the first time in the new year, with a very good attendance. Mrs. Gladys Llewellyn was hostess and arranged a delightful program of readings, pianologues, etc., in which she is remarkably talented. She graciously responded to encores, almost to omitting her luncheon. One girl wholeheartedly offered to eat Mrs. Llewellyn's pie for her, to save that much more time for the program.
Announcement of activities predicts a busy week ahead, with the meeting of the Home Beautiful section scheduled for Monday night. Jan. 12, promptly at 7 in the Blue Bird shop, and the meeting of the gym class. It has been requested that all members interested shall go to the high school gym Friday evening of this week. They are asked to come with gym suits or even bathing suits, and to be there at 7 sharp, for the "exhibition" will be given behind locked and barred doors, and late comers will be treated even as a "raiding party" might."
Discussion of a club meeting place brought no decisions, and will probably be continued next week. As the club had no bad habits, there were no New Year's resolutions and 1925 started under auspicious circumstances.

W.H.M.S. Meeting
A regional meeting of the Women's Home Missionary society of the Southern California conference, held in Hollywood, drew large delegations from each M.E. denomination in the district and resulted in unestimable benefit along missionary lines. The White Temple missionary society was represented by the Mesdames R. W. Marvin, E. W. Baum, E. S. Williamson, E. J. Cornwell, Floyd West, Harry Jayne, and Mrs. Cora Marvin, who is an Illinois resident passing the winter at the home of her son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Marvin.
Miss Smith, who is from the Jessie Lee home in Alaska, made a splendid address on her work. Other inspiring talks and reports from the various districts made a most interesting meeting.
Honor County Officer
Dr. W. Leland Mitchell, former county health officer, who is leaving soon for New York city, thence to Paris, was the honor guest at a farewell party given at the home of Mrs. W. W. Chandler, Santa Ana.
Community singing, story telling and games were entertainment features. Dr. Mitchell was presented with a steamer rug by his friends in which he will enjoy greatest comfort on his voyage.
Yellow was the color motif done with jonquils and daffodils, and extended into the light refreshments served late in the evening. Among the guests were Mrs. Amella Meigher, Dr. V. G. Presson, new county health officer, and others to the number of twenty.

BRIDAL COUPLE ENTERTAIN AT EVENING PARTY
With two hundred guests present, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Hammel, newlyweds, were host and hostess at an elaborate dinner party last evening in Concordia hall, which developed into one of the social events of the winter season.
Concordia hall was artistically decorated for the occasion with streamers in gay colors and flowers of various kinds bedecked the table where a delicious wedding dinner was served. The Misses Malinda, Alma and Anna Cordes, Lydia and Alma Frahm, Schaever, Strudorff and Nordstrom assisted in serving and in other pleasant duties. The La Habra orchestra played as the guests were being seated and throughout the meal, as well as later for the dancing.
Quaint German songs were sung by the Concordia Male quartet and D. Blankmeyer and Jos-Lautenbach told humorous stories and gave impersonations to the great entertainment of the party.
The bridal pair was showered with splendid gifts of linen, presented by the Concordia club novelty gifts, presents from close friends, and a fine silver set by the Concordia section of Herman Sisters and Sons. John Cordes president of the club, extended good wishes and hearty engratulations to the host and hostess on behalf of the club.
Stage presentation of unusual merit and pictures of the happy company interspersed the program of the evening, which was concluded with old time dancing to the orchestral music.
Announcement was made that "Family night" will be held Jan. 28, and a grand prize ball on Thursday evening, Feb. 12. Number One orchestra will provide music at both affairs.

SMALL MISS CELEBRATES 9TH ANNIVERSARY
YOUTHFUL friends of Miss Marjorie Carlisle, or East Adelaest., are yet talking of the very nice party at which they were guests, in honor of the ninth birthday anniversary of Marjorie.
Pink was the favored color used for the afternoon and the centerpiece of pink flowers and smilax, was a dalyalty arrangement. The nine gleaming pink candles atop the pretty birthday cake acclaimed the little hostess' years and according to tradition, she will live a long happy life, as the canaries told it. Marjorie was presented with many pretty gifts by her small friends which she cherishes much.
Games and contests were interesting, and the lucky ones, Helen Tobin and Marjorie Lane, were awarded with prizes. A tasty luncheon with sweets as the concluding course was served late in the afternoon.
Present were Evelyn and Marjorie Lane, Elizabeth Dale, Eleanor, Fochman, Buddy and Harrol Ennis, Joan Lee, Ramona Rapler, Mary Phillips, Esther and Marion Zeppelin, Helen Tobin, Ethel and Fern Mathis. Three of the invited guests, Maurine and Melba Harris and Virginia Mathis, were unable to be with the happy company.

WEEKLY REVIEW OF OIL INDUSTRY
(By Ellwood J. Munger)
The deepest sand to actually carry oil has just been uncovered by the General Petroleum Corporation at Athens, Amstoy No. 1 the deepest well drilling in the district at 6668 is drilling in a sandy shale streaked with oil sand that actually carries oil. This is the greatest depth at which a sand containing oil has ever been found in the California fields and probably sets a world record also. While the oil sand is occurring in thin lignes and not enough to make a commercial producer, yet the indications seem to point to the possibility of picking up a body of sand soon that will make production.
The Marine Oil Corporation's big gasser No. 31 after making from 5 to 10 million cubic feet of gas daily for several days started to make a little production last Monday and is now a 200 barrel well. This is the second well in the Athena field to start off a big gasser and later come into good production. The Marine well is 4908 feet deep.
Production test made on the Sentinel Oil Company's northwest test well Brown No. 1 at 5243 failed to show anything but a lot of gas, and the company has decided to go ahead and make some more hole before giving the well a second production try out. E. J. Miley's Atyena 1 on a production test at 5142 proved a little wet with some oil. Drilling has resumed and it is the intention to open up some more of the dee-sand.
Over on the northeast front of the Rosecrans Area the test well of the district the Standard Oil Company's Cowan No. 1 is making hole at 5825 feet and to date has nothing in the way of promising oil indications. It would appear that the Cowan well is the market of the limits of the northeast.
The Union Oil Company is staking out the southwest limits of the Rosecrans field with its Gordon well. The Gordon test well has already reached it.
Annual Church Meeting
Pot luck supper as a pre-election festivity was enjoyed in the banquet room of the Christian church last evening, when a large crowd gathered in anticipation of the annual choice of officers.
After pitty talks about the table and good wishes, etc., the following persons were chosen to administer the church's affairs the next 12 months:
Church clerk, Mrs. Florence McCulloch; treasurer, H. L. McFarland; financial secretary, Ralph Dickenson; trustees: O. A. Hunt, Dr. H. G. Carlson; deacons: R. McClellan, P. J. McKinney, A. Zimmerman, H. S. Weaver, C. S. Jordan, Andrew Menzies, George Elder, Woodbury, A. W. Koch, Chas Jones.
Elders: Dr. Carlin, Jas Baker, Geo. Alexander, W. R. Dickenson, R. J. Dugdale; deacones: the Mesdames G. W. Alexander, J. A. Belschwalt, C. Burroughs, H. D. Carllin, W. R. Dickenson, Gillet-Harold Harling, W. H. Haskins, Lee Jones, C. E. McCulloch, Geo. McGuire, R. W. Solomon; church organist, Mrs. Ralph Dickenson; Sunday School Supt., J. A. Baker; Sunday School Sec'y., Mrs. Haskins.
The evening was enlivened with singing, short prayer service and a feeling of hearty wholesome fellowship. Reports from departments were encouraging and the new church year was launched under most favorable circumstances.

Fine P.T. A. Program
Particular interest will mark the address of Mrs. Hugh Bradford, state president of Congress of Parent-Teacher Assemblies, meeting in Anaheim high school Saturday at 10:30 a.m., when she will bring a message from the national board of managers meeting held recently in Denver. Mrs. Bradford will remain in the south for several weeks, visiting in San Diego, San Bernardino, Ventura, Orange, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles counties in her official capacity.
Her address Saturday afternoon will feature child welfare. Other numbers of the afternoon include an address by Fullerton city attorney, E. J. Marks, who will explain the child labor law; a talk Bert Steelhead, of the high school faculty, in a new year's message; vocal numbers by the Lyric Quartet, the Meedames Ross, Knipe, Schwenker and Pemberton, and a short address of welcome by the presiding officer, Mrs. Edmund Snow. Opening exercises start at 9:30.
The informal luncheon at noon will afford opportunity for getting acquainted about the tables. Escalloped potatoes for all will be provided by 18 ladies, who have volunteered to supply this excellent dish, hot coffee by the local associations, and all others attending are asked to bring some other covered dish for the meal. A nursery will be provided for children, parents to also bring luncheon for the little ones, which will be served picnic style in the nursery.
In all the meeting is very promising and it is expected there will be unusually large delegations from over the whole fourth district.
New Girls in Town
Anaheim's population had another boost yesterday when twin daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Miller, of South Olive-st., at Anaheim Community hospital. The little ones have been named Betty Jane anr Letty Lou. One is a blonde, the other a brunette, and no doubt there will be much rivalry among the student chaps at A. U. H. S. about 1942-3.
SANTA FE LEASE, Jan. 8—Mr. Eddie Braner took seriously ill Sunday night. He was immediately taken to the Santa Fe Hospital at Los Angeles by Bud Blanager. It was reported last night that an operation was not necessary. He is ill with appendicitis.
Mrs. Robert Jones and daughter Sadie attended a funeral of Mr. Taylor a friend of theirs, who died of lockjaw in Los Angeles.
Mrs. Brady of this lease is summed and it is the intention to open up some more of the deck sand.
Over on the northeast front of the Rosecrane Area the test well of the district the Standard Oil Company's Cowan No. 1 is making hole at 5825 feet and to date has nothing in the way of promising oil indications. It would appear that the Cowan well is the market of the limits of the northeast.
The Union Oil Company is staking out the southwest limits of the Rosecrane field with its Gordon well. The Gordon test well has already reached a depth of 5900 feet and has nothing to show.
Dominguez continues to move forward steadily and increases its production from week to week at the rate of 10,000 barrels a week. Last week's successes in this field were accorded to the Shell Company with two good wells on the Reyes property. Reyes 13 and 13 completed at 4182 and 4160 came in for 1350 and 1400 arrels respectively. Both wells are producing a better than a $2 gravity product, clean oil.
The Birch Oil company is not through at Dominguez notwithstanding the fact that its southwest line test well is nearing the 6000 foot mark drilling is now in a very hard sand and as for showings the well has simply had none. It is the intention of the Birch Oil Company to continue until mechanical difficulties develop.
Torrance added two wells to its production last week, one a 100 bbl well completed by the Petrol-a 380 bbl well completed by the Klein-Meyer property completed at Standard Oil Company. The Standard's well on the Sentinel-Jough-in property marks the Standard's completion of development work on the property, and closed with the bringing in of one of the best wells in the Torrance field, Petroleum Securities No. A13 on the Klein-ever property completed at 3812 is a 100 barrel pumping well. Work on the Klein-meyer property seems to point toward the early completion of development work out on the east front of the Torrance field. The wells of this area now are so small that they barely pay the cost of drilling. Work on the deep sand search at Torrance has been hampered somewhat by the loss of the Chanador-Canfield's Redondo well at 6538 with a fishing job, and the battle against water that the Laura J. Oil company is waging in its 4890 root well. The Shell company is going ahead with drilling and has almost 5400 feet of hole devoid of showings of any kind. The daily output of the Torrance field is now standing around 43:000 barrels.
Rideout Heights got a new lease on life and was furnished a little excitement a few days ago by the completion of a 350 barrel well on the O'Donnell Refining Company's lease. O'Donnell No. 20 put on production in what is considered the upper zone of the field is a 350 barrel well at 4560 feet.
LAW-MAKERS GET BUDGET SHORTLY
SACRAMENTO, Jan. 8—With Gov. Richardson's biennial message out of the way, interest in the legislature today centered on the forthcoming budget.
The budget makers on the board of control have completed the document and it is in the hands of Gov. Richardson who has not indicated just when it will be transmitted to the legislature. However, it is expected that it will go to the law-makers either late this week on early next.
The totals contained in the new budget have been shrouded in considerable mystery, but H. Robert Braden, chief author, explained today that it will be a document of approximately 150 pages and will show both gross and net totals.
Increase in fixed charges and other state expenditures is expected to largely increase the budget this blennium.
Aside from the budget, chief interest centers now in the prospective right over the rtaification of the child labor amendment. Clubwomen here in the interests of the measure are taking steps to prevent a move in to the assembly to forestall early action on the measure.
As soon as it is presented by Gov. Richardson they plan to press for early action and prevent a vote going over until the second session.
The flood of bills is expected to reach its height next week. Many members have been consulting the legislative bureau this week on pet measures and next week will probably see their presentation.
Sew For Girls' School
Queen Esther girls, meeting Tuesday evening, enjoyed a busy hour immediately after school in trying a comfort, which will be sent to Mary J.Pratt Industrial home for Spanish girls in Tucson, Ariz. The girls then had a delicious evening meal and afterward had the regular lesson and business session.
They are looking forward to a slumber and valentine party on Feb. 6, in which only those who have paid their dues are entitled to participate.
This society of young girls is doing a big missionary work, the duties being greatest pleasure through the thoroughly social side of the meetings. Mrs. R. W. Marvin is their leader.

O'Donnell gave the Rideout field its first good well a year ago, and since them some 15 wells have been started in the field, none of them to date getting production. It appears that the only thing that will get production at Rideout is the development of the top sand.
The only wells of importance completed at Long Beach last week were the 100 barrel well by the Dabney Delaney Oil Company and a 400 barrel producer by the San Martinez Oil Company. With the completion of Dabney Delaney No. 18 at 4800 the company closes its Long Beach developments. The San Martinez Booth 4 in pumping to the sump and has been entirely cleaned up but is expected to make a good well. Long Beach production is standing and holding steadily at 125,000 bbls daily.
Huntington Beach's outlook for ocean front development but on the northwest section of the field was dimmed a bit this last week by the showing the Standard Oil Company's Bolsa Chica No. 18 is making. At 4640 feet the formation shows a gray sand and none of the good oil snowings noted at 4170 and 4200. The showings at the higher level excited a good deal of interest as it made the northwest section particularly the ocean front area of the field look like the next Southern California field.
Culver City's new well, the Mohawk Oil and Gas Co.'s No. 1 at 3340 is now pumping its 250 barrels of 21 gravity oil daily and has proven a big extension of the Inglewood Field recently discovered by the Standard.

CONSIDER SHALLOW FRENCH OFFERS
WASHINGTON, Jan. 8.—The shallowness of France's recent "proposals" for settling her four billion dollar war debt was emphasized here today by an official announcement that no meeting of the American Debt Funding Commission will be called to consider the terms proposed in the Clementel memorandum.
After a thoroug examination of this remarkable document, administration officials have reached the conclusion that M. Clementel has not proposed, even informally and unofficially, anything worth considering.
LONDON, Jan. 8.—A proposition for French payments on long time terms and at low interest rates, but none the less a definite proposal today—has been made by Finance Minister Clementel to Chancellor of the Exchequer Churchill, official circles here reported today.
By the terms of Clementel's reported proposition France would pay Great Britain and the United States at the same time, a point on which the British have insisted. France would pay its debt in 80 years, but wants a ten-year moratorium first. The interest rate on the first ten years of payment following the moratorium would be half of one per cent and in the second decade one per cent, with arrangements for payment of the principal left for the present to future negotiations.
Diplomatic circles also were "cusing the information informally transmitted to Britain by the United States advising Britain that under no circumstances can the United States enter a general debt conference unless congress amends the debt funding law."
This information was inclined to crimp British hopes for such a conference. The British realize that it would not be advantageous for them to enter a conference where they would be the only creditors.

TELLS ABOUT TRIP ABROAD
Fullerton Rotarians today were entertained at their regular meeting by an address given by Dr. Walter L. Bigham of Anaheim, who is starting with Dr. Harriet Bigham, Jan. 15, for a trip around the world on one of the Cook conducted tours. The Drs. Bigham made a trip to Europe two years ago and it was of this voyage that he spoke. There was also a musical program given by the employees of the Charles Anderson garage of Fullerton.
