PAGE 17 THE ORANGE COUNTY Plain Dealer An Independent Newspaper Issued Every Afternoon Except Sunday PAUL V. HESTER Editor and Publisher Subscription Rate—In N. Orange-co., per year, $3; 6 months $1.75. Entered at the Postoffice at Anaheim, Calif., as second class matter DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS We shall best honor Christ, as child and man, when our admiration leads us to repeat His life in our own.—Dr. Alexander McKenzie. ECONOMY IN TAXATION EVERYWHERE The movement for tax relief is getting impetus from many sources. President Coolidge is striving manfully for economies in national government, as a basis for additional reductions in taxation. His efforts in this are being endorsed all over the country: But this is not all. There is agitation, in influential quarters, for a general movement, covering the whole country, to bring about governmental economies and relief from burdensome taxation in states, counties and municipalities. The Chamber of Commerce of the United States is urging President Coolidge to call a conference of representatives of the general states with a view of promoting economy in governmental expenditures and reduction in taxation. The recommendation is made that some form of agreement be entered into among the Governors of the states that "they may facilitate legislation and administrative action—state, county and municipal—toward the utmost economy, particularly of taxes which rest on farm lands." Sentiment is strong throughout the country that taxes should be reduced—that government everywhere should be put upon business basis and should be conducted economically and in the interest of the people, without imposing unnecessary hardships upon them. DEMAND FOR CREDIT INEXPLAINABLE the Governors of the states that "they may facilitate legislation and administrative action—state, county and municipal—toward the utmost economy, particularly of taxes which rest on farm lands." Sentiment is strong throughout the country that taxes should be reduced—that government everywhere should be put upon business basis and should be conducted economically and in the interest of the people, without imposing unnecessary hardships upon them. DEMAND FOR CREDIT INEXPLAINABLE Someone describes credit and interest as a pitiless juggernaut and calls upon the press as well as all leaders and teachers to help snatch the people from the pathway of this monstrous thing. It is pointed out that the cause of economic distress in the United States today lies at the door of the people themselves. A comparison of our government with any other that ever existed will show that ours is the best ever devised. But the working people of America are determined to run into debt. The workers of the United States are better paid than any other workers have ever been, and this fact makes their demand for credit inexplainable. The expansion of the banking business, it is claimed, with a decrease in deposits by the people, proves that most of the borrowed money is coming from Wall Street, which will soon be all-powerful. We hardly think the records will show that the bank deposits of the people are diminishing. Most of the money borrowed by the working people is used in building or buying homes, and credit or interest which establishes another home is neither a juggernaut for the family nor the country. And the country has ceased to be frightened by the cry of "Wall street." SPIRITUALISTS AND INVESTIGATORS HEAR Rev. DR. A. H. THOMSON With all of his ingenuity, the only thing man has made to function like a porcupine is a wind-shield. Most of the things we long for might be ours if we had the nerve to ask for them. And now "in conference" may mean he is trying to think of a seven-letter word ending in "z." The world has fewer dreamers now, and it is assumed they tried it in the midst of traffic. BE SATURDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1924 WHOS WHICH IN THE DAY'S NEWS M. ANDRE CITROEN On that day when everyone was an automobile and city streets become finally impassable the most widely used model may not necessarily be the one that made Detroit famous. M. Andre Citroen sees no reason why it should not be the car that is already as well known in France as its Fordian counterpart in the United States. M. Citroen long ago won the title of "The French Ford" by being the first in this country to turn out motor cars of standard model, in immense quantities and according to the latest modern methods of efficiency engineering. But his career has points of dissimilarity from that of Mr. Henry Ford. Like the latter, M. Citroen became famous only in recent years but he was already a successful manufacturer when he took up the making of automobiles. He also became one of the largest nutrition makers in France soon after the war began, and even before that had begun to lay the foundations of a huge fortune. Only forty-six years of age, M. Citroen is a native of Paris, in whose schools he became an industrial engineer. He married young and has three children. Of middle height, blond and with bright blue eyes behind bleaming lenses, M. Citroen beraya his lifelong fondness for outdoor sport by ruddy cheeks and a clear skin, together with enceasing activity. He swims, skates, rides, and plays tennis constantly and drives a car—of course—as boldly as many a racing driver. Correct this sentence: "I'll enjoy the ride more," said the flapper, "if you will drive slowly." At any rate the highwayman of old held you up instead of running ABOUT FRIENDSHIP Confucius, whose wisdom belongs to China, but to the world said, "Never contract Friendship with a man that is not better than thyself." It is the merit of Friendship, Henry Thoreau that, that it takes place on a level higher than the actual characters of the parties seem to warrant. "Friendship is never established as an understood relation," Thoreau observed. "Do you demand that I be less your Friend that you may know it? Yet what right have I to think that another cherishes so rare a sentiment for me? It is a miracle which requires constant proofs. It is an exercise of the purest imagination and the rarest faith. It says by a silent but eloquent behavior, I will be so related to thee as thou canist imagine; even so then mayest believe I will spend truth,—all my wealth on thee." "And the friend responds silently through his nature and life, and treats his Friend with the same divine courtesy. He knows us literally through thick and thin." He never asks for a sign of love, but can distinguish it by the features which it naturally wears. We never need to stand upon ceremony with him with regard to his visits. Wait not till I invite thee, but observe that I am glad to see thee when thou comest. It would be paying too dear for thy visit to ask for it. Where my friend lives there are all riches and every attraction, and no slight obstacle can keep me from him. HEALTH & DIET ADVICE By Dr. Frank McOoy Author of "THE FAST WAY TO HEALTH" MILK Milk is one of the foods which man has been able to develop through the proper care of cattle, so that cows and nanny goats have been trained to give milk for a long period instead of for the short time necessary for the nourishment of their offspring. Also the milk of any animal is only the ideal food for the young of the particular animal, nevertheless I believe that cow's milk is one of the most valuable foods which man can use at the present day, provided he will learn to understand its proper place in the diet. Milk is a liquid food and must be completely masticated as if it were solid food, that is to say it must be moved around in the mouth so that it may be thoroughly mixed with saliva. This is not done, as a general rule, and the milk consequently forms into large curds in the stomach because of being swallowed in large mouthfuls and the digestive juices of the stomach are unable to penetrate these curds and extract from them the necessary nourishment. Raw, unpasteurized milk contains practically all of the elements necessary for the health of human beings. with bright blue eyes behind bleaming lenses, M. Citroen beraya his lifelong fondness for outdoor sport by ruddy cheeks and a clear skin, together with enceasing activity.
