DENY OVERTURES WERE DECLINED TOKYO, Dec. 19—Foreign Minister Shidehara this afternoon declined that Japan had declined American overtures to send the United States fleet to Japan following its Hawaiian maneuvers. "The government cannot decline a proposal which has not been made," the foreign minister declared. "The story has no foundation in fact." Premier Kato speaking at a Selvukal political meeting had declared that the United States had suggested sending its naval squadron to Japan following its fleet practice there next spring so as to calm Japanese suspicions. Japan, according to Kato's speech, replied that the animosity against the maneuvers in Japan was negligible and it was unnecessary to send the fleet to Japan. WORLD TOURISTS HERE TOMORRW The local C. of C. offices today smelled like a bridal bower, when Secretary George W. Reid brought in pair after pair of orange blossoms, preparatory to the visit of the Steamer Belgenland tourists tomprrow. Each of the visitors will have a blossom tacked upon his person by the hosts of this district. Reid expects to obtain the last of the 10 closed cars today. Most of the merchants have been unable to leave their stores—the Saturday before Christmas is not a convenient time. The county is furnishing 75 closed cars. Plans to route tomorrow's tourists so that they will visit Orange-co harbor, and omit Garden Grove have been made by those in charge of the arrangements. Vastous secretaries of C. of C.'s favored the change, if there was time. It's useless friend, this thing of grunting Over real or fancied lills; A better plan's a little hunting Through the marsh and o'er the hills. THE RADIO K. H. HIGHT MOUNT VERNON, Ill., Dec. 19. —The last line of defense—based on that mystic, insignible shadowland of insanity—was marshaled here today to save Rev. Lawrence M. Hight, unrocked minister orina, from death on the gallows for the murder of Wilford Sweetin, "inconvenient" husband of Elsie Sweetin, his co-defendant. Two alienists, Dr. H. W. Walker of the Creel Spring Sanitarium and Dr. C. H. Anderson, superintendent of the Anna State Hospital for the insane, took the stand for the defense and led the unlettered jury thru the strange by-paths of mental incompetency, explaining in their ponderous technical terms man's strange actions when the slender thread of reason snaps. And this jury made up of sons of toil to whom the demarcation between right and wrong is very sharply etched, listed skeptically, wonderingly. In the meantime, Elsie's lawyers temporarily rested. They played their trump card yesterday by calling Elsie to the stand but somehow or other something went amiss, and today they were realizing their bulwarks of defense. When Elsie's confession was barred from the jury, it was generally conceded, in the little groups which gather nightly to discuss this case, that the state's case against her had collapsed. If they were betting people, they would get only a light sentence. But today, current opinion holds testimony will be made.
