Orange-co., per year, $3; 6 months $1.75. Entered at the Postoffice at Anaheim, Calif., as second class matter DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself; This do and thou shalt live.—Luke 10.27.28. LENGTHEN CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY There is a way to lengthen the Christmas holiday and to prolong its joys. This way lies within reach of cash and every person. There is no magic in it. No Alladin's lamp is required to bring this boon. It may be had in the simplest, homeliest way possible. That is— By purchasing Christmas gifts early in December. Start out tomorrow morning, if you have not already done your holiday shopping, and your Christmas will begin. It will continue up to and through Christmas Day and up to and through the time when you hear from those to whom you are giving. In truth, the gladness will be prolonged beyond that. Just analyze a bit the pleasures you would get by shopping without delay. You would find it comfortable now, for one thing. The stores are not so much crowded as they will be later. You would find the salespeople in fine fettle, not worn and weary with the congestion that will come later. You will find choice stocks from which to select. And here comes the direct joy that you would get out of it—the pleasure, first, in selecting your gifts; then the cumulative pleasure of anticipating the pleasure you are going to give when you send these presents to your relatives, friends and dear ones. Day by day, after your purchases, you would feel keen delight in looking forward to the time when the gifts leave you. And if your gifts are to go by mail you can add to your pleasure and incidentally give comfort to postal workers by putting your packages in the mail at once. If you buy fraudulent stocks without investigating, blame If you buy fraudulent stocks without investigating, blame only yourself for your losses. THE FIGHT AGAINST ILLITERACY While we talk about and deplore the extent of illiteracy in the United States, there is one woman who is doing her utmost to wipe it out. This is Mrs. Cora Wilson Stewart of Frankfort, Kentucky. It was she who established the Moonlight schools in the Kentucky mountains in 1911 as a result of some pitiful experiences she had had as superintendent of schools in Rowan county, with adults who could not read or write. This woman is now engaged in a campaign to teach the 8488 illiterates in the state of Vermont to read and write within a year. Mrs. Stewart’s methods are interesting. She first teaches the illiterate to write his own name. This is accomplished in one day and then he is eager to learn more. In six weeks he can read and write simple sentences. Some message from the state government dealing with agriculture, cooking, health or saving money is presented in simple language and is an incentive to him to continue his efforts to acquire learning. The social and economic danger in the widespread illiteracy that prevails in the United States and which was revealed in the draft, is apparent. More than that, it is a national disgrace. Those who ceas eto learn, cease truly to live. Those who cease to learn, cease truly to live. The most out of life. They are sending photographs by radio. But lovers will prefer to send them in the old, old way. It is the Sixty-eighth Congress with “57 varieties” of tasks and opportunities before it. But do not expect too much from this session. The prosperity that was expected after the election—provided the election went Coolidgeward—is being experienced. All parts of the country are feeling it, more or less. You need this! Presently the minister came along and going up to McDougall with the intention of severely reprimanding him, said in a harsh voice "MacDougall, do you know the Ten Commandments?" MacDougall scratched his chin for a moment and then, in equally harsh voice, said: "D'ye think you're beat me? Just whistle the first three or four bars, an' I'll have a try at it." HEALTH & DIET ADVICE By Dr. Frank McCoy Author of "THE FAST WAY TO HEALTH" BATHING (Continued) INTERNAL BATHING, or ENEMAS, I consider to be the most effective single remedy with which I am familiar that can be used in almost every acute or chronic disease. When I get an emergency call in a case of sickness, I always advise an enema to be administered at once, and after giving such advice over the telephone, I usually find that by the time I make the call the patient has recovered, at least to some extent, through this simple method of treatment. Not only are poisons in the intestines removed by the enema, but any nerve centers in the abdomen, such as are found around the uterus, ovaries or rectum, will be instantly relieved from the pressure of the accumulated feces or gases if the enema is taken correctly and brings about satisfactory results. The apparatus used for administering an enema may be purchased at any drug store, and consists of a rubber bag or enameled can to which is attached a long rubber tube, with an attachment at the end for inserting into the rectum. The container should be hung up on the wall about four or five feet above the floor, so that the water will flow by gravity. The best position to assume in taking the enema is what is called the "knee-chest" position, where the patient kneels on the floor with the hips elevated, and, at the same time, rests the chest against the floor. The ordinary enema should be of warm water, and usually one quart is sufficient. The water should be allowed to flow in very slowly while the patient is in the knee-chest position. (To be continued.) THE BEST OF ADVICE SOCIETY'S CRUSH The limits of the power which can be legitimately exercised by society over the individual, is a question that is coming to be discussed more and more. It is not a new question. In a certain sense, it has divided mankind almost from the remotest ages. But in old times this contest was between subjects, or some classes of subjects, and the government. John Stuart Mill, in the introduction to his essay On Liberty, sums it up for you. By Liberty, in those days, was meant protection against the tyranny of the political ruler. The people were content then to be ruled by a master, on condition of being guaranteed more or less efficaciously against his tyranny. Then men began to believe that the various magistrates of state should be their delegates, revocable at their pleasure. By degrees, this new demand superceded the previous efforts to limit the power of rulers. As the struggle proceeded for making the ruling power emanate from the periodical choice of the ruled, some persons began to think that too much importance had been attached to the limitation of power itself. What was wanted then, as Mill puts it, was that the rulers should be identified with the people; that their interest and will should be the interest and will of the nation. The nation did not need to be protected against its will. There was no fear of its tyrannizing over itself. The idea was not disturbed by such temporary abberations as those of the French Revolution. COMMENTS of the PRESS What Editors Are Saying WATER SURVEY FOR STATE URGED—Sacramento Bee The movement to summon private finance to the aid of the state water-resources survey, started in 1921, two-thirds completed and brought to a standstill by the "economy" shuffle of 1923, has received new impetus in Tulare County. The drive, which many Tulare county farmers have entered, is first for $100000 to complete this survey. Back of it are various plans for a late-wide irrigation management. Organization is also under way if other counties. The man behind this drive say much land which needs only water to be fertile has none, and could have it; that conservation and intelligent distribution of water are an absolute necessity; and that only through knowledge of how much water the state has and where it will make constructive handling of the problem possible. As California grows more and more thickly settled, more and more water will be needed, and sooner or later every available inch will be used where it will do the most good. There is need for such a State survey as is now being urged. EDUCTION'S VALUE TO THE FARMER—Riverside Press Most parents in rural communities have been debating all summer whether they should send their boys and girls who completed courses in the small district schools last spring to a high school this fall. One question they ask is "Will it pay in dollars and cents?" The United States Department of Agriculture and the various state agricultural colleges have made a number of investigations of the differences between the incomes of educated and uneducated farmers. All these studies show that in the majority of cases the better trained farmers receive the better incomes. In three representative areas in Indiana, Illinois and Iowa tenant farmers with a high school education receive an average annual labor income of $526 a year more than the men with only a common-school education. A college education adds to this average 153 a year, making the income of college graduates $970 more a year than the labor earnings of the men with only a common-school education. Cornell University has estimated that a high school education is worth as much to a farmer as $6000 worth of bonds bearing 5 per cent interest and that a college education is worth twice that amount. The nation did not need to be protected against its will. There was no fear of its tyrannizing over itself. The idea was not disturbed by such temporary abberations as those of the French Revolution, the worst of which, as Mill observes, were the work of an usurpant few, and which, in any case, belonged not to the permanent working-of popular institutions, but to a sudden and convulsive outbreak against monarchial and aristocratic despotism. In time, however, a democratic republic, the United States, came to occupy a large portion of the earth's surface and make itself felt as one of the most powerful members of the community of nations; and elective and responsible government became subject to the observations which wait upon a great existing fact. "It is now perceived," says Mill. "that such phrases as 'self-government' and 'the power of the people over themselves' do not express the true state of the case." "The people" who exercise the power are not always the same people with those over whom it is exercised and the 'self-government' spoken of is not the government of each by himself, but each by all the rest. "The will of the people, moreover, practically means the will of the most numerous or the most active PART of the people; the majority; the people, consequently, may desire to oppress a part of their number; and precautions are as much needed against this as against any other kind of power." The limitation, therefore, of the power of government over individuals, loses none of its importance when the holders of power are regularly accountable to the community, that is, to the strongest party therein. Jones answered an advertisement and sent a dollar for four pairs of socks. When they arrived Jones looked them over, and then wrote the advertiser: "Socks received. The patterns are vile.
