100 SAN DIEGANS AT ELK'S LODGE
Accompanied by a big orchestra about 100 San Diegans, including the officers of the lodge there, "marched" up to Anaheim with W. C. Crandall, Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler, who paid his annual visit to Anaheim lodge No. 1345.
The chanters of the visiting lodge were among the guests, and several selections including solos were sung in the chorus of the evening's program which included serving a dinner and putting on the work of the initiatory degree.
Contrary to expectations, there was no speaking at the dinner, the time being given to the singers.
L. A. Lewis, Exalted Ruler, presided.
The point is, one person may perceive ugliness where another is sensible of beauty; and every individual ought to acquilece in his own sentiment, without pretending to regulate those of others.
To seek the real beauty, or the real ugliness, Hume contended, is as fruitless an inquiry as to pretend to ascertain the real sweet or real bitter.
JURY DISAGREES IN SHOOTING EPISODE
After an hour of balloting, a jury that heard the case, of Francisco Gonzales, formerly of Placentia, charged with assault with a deadly weapon, reported to Superior Judge F. C. Drumm at Santa Ana, that it was hopelessly deadlocked, and it was dismissed.
A date for a second trial was to be set today. Meantime Gonzales has been taken back to the county jail.
The chief witness for the prosecution was Pedro de los Reyes of Placentia, who claimed he was stopped while riding his bicycle home one night more than a year ago and that his assailant fired three shots at him, all of which took effect. A lighted lantern Reyes was carrying ignited and Reyes was able to see the facial characteristics of the ruffian. Seeing Gonzales in Anaheim jail a month ago, when he was being held on a lesser charge, Reyes declared he recognized him as his assailant.
It was understood the jury stood six to six on the final ballot.
Experimenters have demonstrated that the odors given off by metals when heated are due to the chemical changes they undergo.

ACRES FOR $100,600
Unless bidders appear in court to raise his bid, B. A. Sidnam, Anahiem real estate man, will secure possession of 223 acres on the state highway near the county hospital owned by the late B. F. Ford of Santa Ana, it was learned today. Sidnam's bid of $100,600 for the property, known as Tract 71, is the highest of four submitted to Superior Judge Z. B. West, who is executor of the estate.
Confirmation proceedings are to be held before Superior Judge R. Y. Williams Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. At this time bidders may come into court and, providing the first new bid is 10 per cent higher than Sidnam's figures, the offers may continue back and forth.
The proceedings are attracting considerable attention as this property is the first of the large Ford estate to be liquidated. The estate has been appraised at a figure slightly less than half a million dollars.

McCOY RESCUES
FELLOW PRISONER
LOS ANGELES, D.C.
chapter in his eventful career here today when he saved a man's life,
preventing a fellow prisoner from hanging himself.
Awakened by the death gaspe of George Watterman, who had hung himself from his cell bars by a pair of suspenders, McCoy rushed to the man's side and cut him down.
Jailers revived Watterman and he will recover altho he was at the point of death by strangulation when McCoy rescued him.
Springing from his cot, McCoy shouted for help and was assisted in saving Watterman, waiting trial for burglary, by George Cowdrey, a prisoner recently sentenced to life imprisonment for murder.
According to jailers Stevens and Palmer, Watterman would have died within a few seconds, except for the former pugilist's quick work in cutting the straps which suspended Watterman by the throat.
Watterman was later removed to the General hospital.
