WEEKLY REVIEW OF OIL INDUSTRY
(By E. J. Munger)
The Superior Oil Company's Maxwell No. 3 completed yesterday at 4522 is the biggest thing in the way of production at Rosecrans. The well is producing 2000 barrels of 35.6 gravity oil and so far as is known it is the world's largest high gravity producer. Maxwell No. 2 at 4522 is producing from the same zone as was found by the Mille-Marland company in its No. 1 well to be wet. The Superior well it appears is on top of the structure and shows that the general trend of the Rosecrans oil field is southwesterly.
The advent of E. J. Miley's Athena I & 1000 barrel well in the northwest area of the Athens field was the signal for a lot of new development to get underway. No less than six new rigs are going up, the new wells to be started include one by the Shell Company, one by the Petroleum Midway, or by the Pan-American Geo. S. Getty two wells, and one by W. H. Fisher and the Federal Drilling Company.
Among the deep test wells of interest in the Rosecrans-Athens district the General Petroleum's Amistoy is perhaps the most important. The Amistoy at 645 feet is taking cores and finds light oil showings only. Dabney Northwest extension well is approaching the 54 mark without meeting with any special encouragement. The Union Oil Company's Trust 1 at 5801 feet got a few showings of oil and gas that may make a well. Out on the northeast front the Standard Oil's Cowan No. 1 is drilling at 5309 and to-date has not found any indications of either oil or gas. A little further field now drilling at 5245 is not offering anything particularly encouraging.
Old Huntington Beach stepped out into the oil limelight last week with two big wells, one for 675 barrels, the other for two barrels. The big well the biggest Huntington Beach has put on were completed by the Standard Oil Company on the famous Bolsa Chica Gun Club property. Bolsa Chica No. 17 the big well completed by the Standard was drilled to 4633 feet, started off at 1500 barrels and later settled to 1300. No. 16 the smaller well was drilled to 4597 and is producing a 27 gravity oil. These Bolsa Chica wells lie to the extreme northwest of the field near the ocean and prove that there is a great future for a lot of the low land country along the ocean front Beach.
Drilling work continues to proceed at Rideout Heights. Whatever without any change for the better. Rideout Heights is the mystery field of Southern California. A year ago a 1000 barrel well was brought in at 4250 feet since there have been a half dozen wells drilled from 4500 to 5200 feet and none are producers. The field formation seems to be either pretty badly broken up or else the production occurs in thin stringers. The Standard's Pattern well on the northeast front of the field is drilling at 5309 and to-date has not had even a showing.
With the abandonment of the Miley well at 5312 feet finis is written on the oil development work at Anheim. Miley is the third well to give up the prospects. The Standard quit some months ago at 5700 later the Superior Oil Company abandoned its Brookhurst well at 5000.
Hard luck of one kind and another continues to dog the work of C. C. Stall in his efforts to

Hard luck of one kind and another continues to dog the work of C. C. Stall in his efforts to complete an oil well at Downey. Stall got the well drilled at 4890, lost about 460 feet of hole on account of mechanical troubles and now at 4310 it appears that the water has not been shut off and the condition of the hole renders further work difficult.
La Mirada is making another bid to get into the oil business. The Scientific Oil Company has resumed operations and every effort will be made to put a badly junked hole in condition to re-drill and deepen. Operations were suspended several months ago at 4212.
At Los Nietos the Standard Oil's Culp Community well is down some 5300 feet and to-date has had no oil showings. It begins to appear as though there will be no northerly extension of the Santa Fe Springs though there will be no northerly extension of the Santa Fe Springs field. The Associated McNail 2 has passed 6000 feet and has nothing to show in the way of oil or gas showings.
