EXPERT TURNERS EXHIBIT TONIGHT Turn Vereins or Turn Societies were started in this country in 1871 and have become one of the most popular gymnasium institutions in the larger cities. They are strictly 100 percent American and are members of the American Gymnastic Union. Los Angeles has one of the largest institutions of this kind on the coast, under the direction of Mr. Carl Metter, who was the fore-turner of New York City. From there he went to the Normal College where the finest turners of the country are taught to be instructors. Finally he took charge of the Los Angeles Society and the club has proved very popular. Seattle has a Turn Society larger than the Los Angeles society, starting with 12 students and steadily climbing until around 3,000 members were obtained. The muscular system is very complex and the correct method for the stimulation of every part is indeed a science. The turner's aim is to teach the masses thorax and systematic exercises. In each individual strength, ability, age and sex must be considered when taking exercises so that they may attain health, proper carriage, grace and vigor. It is practically useless to be an expert in one line of exercises or athletics as this method only gives unusual development to certain parts and neglects other parts which may need more attention. Special forms of athletics have a tendency to throw the physical system out of balance. It is only through a systematic set of exercises that we can give full development to the body, give all the muscles benefit of training and mold into a well-balanced person. POSTPONE GAME SEATTLE, Oct. 29. — An extremely heavy rainstorm, accompanied by a high wind that prevailed today from San Francisco to Alaska, caused the third postponement of the second game of the "little world's series" between Seattle and St. Paul. BEARS KICK AT PLAYING OF COLE BERKELEY, Oct. 29—U. of C. has protested to the U.S.C. against allowing Bill Cole, varsity tackle of the Trojans to play in the game between Cal. and U.S.C., in Berkeley next Saturday, on the ground that Cole has concocted football at Santa Ana High school. The protest was sent recently by Dean Joel Hildebrand of the U. of C. to Wm. R. LaPorte, director of physical education at U.S.C., it became known today. "We have information in our possession showing beyond doubt that Cole has been engaged as a coach at Santa Ana High school," Dean Hildebrand said today. "We have received an answer from Mr. LaPorte to our protest but no definite action has yet been taken by the U.S.C. authorities. However, we are certain that when we present our facts to U.S.C., they will comply with our request and rule Cole out of their lineup. "Stanford University is also in possession of the same facts and I understand that they too will file a similar protest." Coach Elmer Henderson of the Trojans said he was confident when University of California authorities had fully investigated charges against Cole, they would consent to his playing in Saturday's game. "We have sworn statements from five Santa Ana H. S., authorities that Cole received no pay for STOCK MARKET OFF GENERALLY NEW YORK, Oct. 29.—Stock prices were generally inclined to lower price levels in a dull and featureless market today. Selling pressure was directed against the industrial and specialty stocks and in the absence of buying power, prices showed slight losses from yesterday's closing level; but the movement was by no means uniform, since a number of prominent stocks like American Tobacco, Mallinson Silk, Montgomery Ward, etc., were strong enough to move against the general trend of the market and to record new high prices for the current movement. The industrial market leaders exhibited the same signs of nervousness which were in evidence on Monday and Tuesday and which, according to economic and business experts, is also appagent in industry and business. The Iron Age said today that the election continues to influence the steel market, holding back some orders which might otherwise be placed this week. This is, of course, regardless of the result of the balloting on Tuesday. The underlying strength of the stock market was seen in the easy absorption of U. S. Steel. American Can and others of the high priced industrials which were thrown on the market in the first hour and in the prompt rally in price which followed the cleaning away of the accumulation of selling orders. Efforts of the bear party to cause a general unsettlement of prices were unsuccessful and in the third and fourth hours the market approached the condition of a stalemate with neither side able to make much of an impression on prices. The quick rise of American Tobacco to 160½ up five points from the previous close, was due to the action of the directors in placing the stock on a 16 per cent dividend basis preparatory to splitting up the stock on a 2 for 1 basis. Have you ever played the favorites in a day’s racing across the board only to see or read of the long shot boys copping? Course you have. If you follow the ponies. Then you swore off the sure choices and started playing the wild ones, only to have the depe run true to form. This being the case with about every railbird in the game some facts collected regarding the outcome of the thoroughbred meets on the New York tracks the past season are interesting. The results of 890 races were tabulated. These results showed that in 358 of the race favorites won. In other words 40 per cent of the time the dope was good. Second choices came through in 210 events—a percentage of 23. Odds-on horses won 121 events. Also, 82 odds on horses lost. Walsh, who is making a tour of the leading collegiate camps, east and west.) COLUMBUS, Oct. 29. — Dr. John Wilice, a scholarly soul and just a bit amusee, had been telling the writer in his precise way just what men had made a good team at Ohio State in 1924 out of a bad team in 1923. Subsequently, for purposes of accuracy, I asked: "Just who were these men you esteem?" "I esteem them all," said he and glanced out over the gridiron where two of his four varsity teams were engaged in legalized mayhem. "Why you big palooka——" The doctor was speaking. His tone was that of a man who inadvertently swallowed banana oil in place of mayonnaise and a depressing silence fell upon all. "I've been telling you for a week where to stand on that shift." The doctor clutched the big palooka by the loose of his jersey and urgently but not infirmly showed him where to stand. "Yes, I have a pretty good team," he continued reflectively. "It looks like our best since 1924, when we were bent out of the conference championship in the last minute of the season. Oh, awful! Let me at him——" They let the doctor at him. The latter was seemingly a very immobile young man who had just ter, thence to decoated block. 7. Marchers wear numbers in front on left shoulder. 8. CALL OFF SERIES SEATTLE, Oct. 29. — The "Junior world's series" between the Seattle and St. Paul baseball clubs was called off this afternoon on account of continued rains which seem likely to keep the field soaked until Friday at least. WALKER PAVORITE NEWARK, N.J., Oct. 29. — Mickey Walker, world's welterweight champion, was a hot favorite to defeat Jack Malone, St. Paul middleweight, in their 13-round bout here tonight. Plain Dealer Classified Ads produce results. Try this medium plunged through the center of the line for 10 yards. "Didn't I tell you not to run that way? You were all bent up like a safety pin. When you hit the line, hit it this way." Dr. Wilce abruptly charged the hapless individual, head up and brushed him right out of his (the doctor's) path. He dusted his hands and came back. As the doctor was saying, he estoems all of the men. They have made a good second in conference football, to date beating Purdue and getting ties with Chicago and Iowa. They still have games to play with Indiana, Michigan and Illinois. "If there's any skull cracking to be done we'll get it then." This was Wilce's sucessor war at sitting up the situation ahead. He is pretty well satisfied with his line, which averages about 120 pounds, but the backfield is extremely light, and none too adept, at that. Karow, he regards as his best back, but the young man torse a careless cartilage in his knee and won't be ready until the Michigan game. Captain Young at center also is cut with a broken rib but Watts, the 145-pound wildcat, is just as good as ever. In Cunningham, he has one of the heaviest ends in captivity. He weighs 196 pounds and is reasonably agile for a man of his embonpoint. Month-End Specials On SALE THURSDAY & FRIDAY A.M. Store Closes at Noon Friday 40 to 54-in.
