REALLY WELCOME HOME TO WALTER When Walter Johnson pitches his game at the Brea Bowl, Oct. 22, he will practically be back where he started his baseball career, for it was on a local sand lot that Walter first found out he could do things with a ball. Many Orange-co. men recall Johnson's early days at the game and they will be interested spectators when he plays here again at the end of this month. And among the most interested of the spectators will be U. S. Dist. Atty. Joseph C. Burke of Los Angeles. For it was Burke who first recognized Johnson's possibilities and influenced him to leave the local lots for the bigger opportunities with the larger clubs. Burke was at that time a struggling law student, and the rise to fame of these two local men in their chosen lines is a matter of great pride among their former associates here. Many intimate friends of Johnson claim that if he was asked to place the credit for his phenominal success at baseball he would without hesitation say that the advice, encouragement and aid from Joseph C. Burke had more to do with his brilliant career than any other one factor. This return of a favorite son to the scenes of his youth, together with Babe Ruth, Bob Meusel, Ken Williams, Ernie Johnson, Harvey McClellan, Jimmy Austin and other major league stars is expected to make baseball history for Orange County, and plans are being made to handle an enormous crowd. The game is being promoted by the Anaheim Elks Lodge No. 1245, and the net proceeds are to be devoted entirely to charity. First Big Sale This Week to do with his brilliant career than any other one factor. This return of a favorite son to the scenes of his youth, together with Babe Ruth, Bob Meusel, Ken Williams, Ernie Johnson, Harvey McClollan, Jimmy Austin and other major league stars is expected to make baseball history for Orange County, and plans are being made to handle an enormous crowd. The game is being promoted by the Anaheim Elks Lodge No. 1245, and the net proceeds are to be devoted entirely to charity. TONGMEN STARVE NEW YORK, Oct. 28.—A month of cramped starvation in packing cases in the hold of the Gaultie Prince en route from Hong Kong to New York today has claimed the life of one Chinese and was threatening to kill two of his six companions, all said to be members of the Hip Sing tong and possible recruits for the tong war in which Hip Sing and On Leong tongmen are arrayed. The seven Chinese, believed part of a shipment of 70, were arrested after they had been unleashed from the coffin-like confines of the packing cases in which they made the 30-day trip from the Orient. Damages of $50,000 are asked by Mrs. Eva Kay (above), Detroit social secretary, of Seymour Burrell (below), side of S. S.Kreage, 10-cent-store mogul. She says Burrell won her away from her husband and then laughed at her when she urged him to divorce his wife. Burrell averts the charges are untrue. SOCIALIST LANIS NEW YORK, Oct. 28.—Countess Caherine Karolyi, an active Socialist, and wife of Hungary's former premier, was permitted to land today from the liner George Washington, despite charges from Stanwood Menikim, president of the National Security league, that she was a bolshevist so crimson that Hungary called her "Red Catherine." Nenken asked immigration officials to investigate her activities with a view to deportation. His charges, Countess Karolyi treated as a colossal joke. Not only is she not a bolshevist, she said, but the bolshevists of Hungary dislike her so much that they exiled her and her husband, Count Michael Karolyi, with a traveling allowance of 25 cents a day. They now are living in London in exile . Contessa Karolyi said she hoped some day to be able to make the United States her home, and that day would be "the proudest of my life." Nenken's charges got little attention. An honor guard of New York detectives was assigned to take her wherever she wished to go in New York City in safety. She will stay with friends, the pretty Hungarian noblewoman said, at an address she is keeping secret in fear of violence at the hands of Hungarian agents in the United States. "It's a lie," she smilingly sald of Menken's charge, "I am a Socialist but never have I been even active in politics. My husband's activities, however, gave me a social but not political limelight. "If I were not a Hungarian countess, I would love to be an American citizen. Some day I may be. That will be the proudest day of my life." AT THE ANGELINA HOTEL J. C. Babb, Long Beach; J. A.Edmann, G. L.Meachan, and Paul H.Harper, Los Angeles; Nelson Crawford Goods of all kinds wanted. Mr. Merchant, if you have anything you don't want, send it in here and I'll get you cash for it.
