FLOOD CONTROL WORK IN SHAPE The Anaheim-Richfield Protection district, in preparation for the rainy weather, has just completed the work of putting its levees into condition out of funds supplied by the county. One of the most dangerous ponits was near the place of John Wallis, recently elected president. Protection work over a stretch of 372 feet was put in, consisting of piling 12 feet deep, with 300 pounds of concrete poured at each one, wire three feet under ground and four feet above ground fastened on the posts, and brush thrown on top. The river will be dragged to remove Russian thistles, so that the bed will offer an unimpeded channel to the current. A. J. Jorgensen of Garden Grove was the contractor. George W. Reid, secretary of the Anaheim C. of C., was elected secretary of the district at the recent reorganization meeting. DELANEY WINNER PORTLAND, Oct. 15. — The wrath and right of Jimmie Delaney, St. Paul light-heavyweight, combined to send Ray Pelkey, rugged Oakland boxer, into dreamland last night in the sixth round of their scheduled 10-round bout. Delany, angered because Pelkey continued to strike low, tore into the Oakland boy with full power and battered him down and out at the end of the fifth round. But the bell saved a knockout. Pelkey came out bleeding and almost helpless in the sixth. Delaney met him with a terrific right and Pelkey went out cold. Eddie Robinson knocked out Frankie Green in the first round of the semi-windup. WOULD TRANSFER SEATTLE SERIES PORTLAND, Ore., Oct. 15. — Red Killifer, manager of the league-leading Seattle team, stated today he was hopeful the vote of the Coast league teams would be favorable to his request to have the final four games of the Seattle-Portland series transferred to the Puget Sound city. Killifer stated that the Seattle club had asked President Williams for a vote of the league. The intense interest displayed by Seattle fans and continued bad weather here are reasons given for the change. It is understood, however, that Babe Ruth is scheduled to play an exhibition game in Seattle Sunday, which would interfere with regular Seattle-Portland double-header. Killifer fretted and chafed yesterday as rain poured and prevented his men getting a crack at Portland. A double-header will be played today, starting at 1:30 p.m. The weather, however, is very unsettled and the ball grounds quite soft from last night's rain. ANOTHER JOCKEY TO RIDE EPINARD NEW YORK, Oct. 15.—Chronic friction between jockey and trainer was attributed by horsemen today as the reason for Pierre Wertheimer's decision to allow a rider, other than Everett Haynes, to have the leg up on Epinard in the event that another international race is arranged for the fourth championship. It was said that Haynes and Eugene Leigh, the trainer, have not been on the best terms for some time. The jockey's handling of Epinard in his three races on American tracks has been the subject of much criticism. Wertheimer plans to sail for home Saturday, taking Haynes with him. Epinard will be left here in charge of Leigh. ANNEXATION PLAN DEFEATED 20 TO 16 The proposal to annex a large strip of territory laying south of Fullerton and reaching to Anaheim city limits was defeated yesterday in the annexation election, according to complete returns. The vote is announced as 20 opposed to annexation, and 16 in favor. Persons under the age of 18 may not be admitted to opium dens in Java. CITY CERTAIN OF WHOLESALE HOUSE If the wholesale warehouse which Smart & Final intend to place in Northern Orange Co. to accommodate their trade isn't brought to Anaheim, some other wholesale house is likely to place such a house here, according to grocers prominent in the movement. Smart & Final will lease a place, because it regards the venture as an experiment, and extraordinarily good terms were given the first, by which its overhead will be very small, besides assuring it of most of the business of the independent houses. The firm had about made up its mind where to locate previous to being interviewed by the local C. of C. Another big wholesale house—larger than any other in the south—and doubtedly will follow the suit of Smart & Final if the experiment proves successful, and in that case Anaheim would be almost certain to be picked. It is said. MADRID, Oct. 15—King Alfonso of Spain, accompanied by officers of the general staff, left for Seville to open the congress of medical sciences there.
