where she was safely "anchored" for the night at 1:02. As soon as the giant ship was "tied" the work of putting her in condition for the hop to Camp Lewis was started.
The hop from Fort Worth to San Diego was without incident until late yesterday, when the Shenandoah passed over Yuma and into California. Just as she was ready to negotiate the high Cuyamaca mountains, east of here, heavy clouds were encountered and it was decided to take a course to the north, reaching the coast by the way of the San Bernardino mountains. But in trying to pass thru the San Gregoria gorge shortly after sunset, the Shenandoah encountered contrary headwinds, rain and snow. The velocity of the head winds were so strong, it was stated, that her speed was reduced to ten miles per hour, which caused a five hour delay in her arrival here. After once negotiating the treacherous San Bernardino mountains, however, the Shenandoah headed south with strong tail winds and rode with ease to North Island.
CAMP LEWIS READY FOR SHENANDOAH
CAMP LEWIS, Wash., Oct. 11. —All was in readiness here today for the arrival of the U. S. S. Shenandoah, which is scheduled to arrive late Sunday evening.
Determined that no hitch shall mar the delicate task of anchoring the giant dirigible when she pushes her nose into the circle of searchlights at the landing field, Lleut. Gordon B. Wolley and his crew of 15 picked navy men rehearsed their paris last night. All steps in the difficult undertaking were gone thru with, from the red flare at the head of the mooring mast, to the hauling of the anchor cables by the winches.
It is estimated that it will take the ship from 35 to 39 hours to cover the distance between San Diego and Camp Lewis.

In as much as machine betting is the legal method of backing ones guesses in Kentucky, book makers orders were at considerable disadvantage, but early figures lined the starters up this way:
Eplnard 5 to 1; Chilhowes 3 to 1; Sarazon 3 to 1; Little Chief 20 to 1; Mad Play, 40 to 1; Altawood, 20 to 1; My Play, 15 to 1; Princess Doreen, 3 to 1; Everett Haynes, American jockey who rides Epinard for Pierre Wertheimer was to try again to turn back the American challengers of the famous son of Badajoz—America track followers gave him a better chance because of the discreet at a mile and a quarter, recalling the stirring finish the great visitor made in his last race at Aqueduct, when he was barely out by Ladkin. The French horse was coming strong at that finish.
Mask Gardner will be up on Chilhowes, which was being given a heavy play in the early betting. Babin will ride the Fair Stable Sarazen, two year old champion of a year ago and he was being given plenty of support also.
Princese Doreen the star filly of the Audley Farm Stable, with 117 pounds to carry, was 3 to 1 in the early betting with plenty to back her. Suits was to ride her.
Earl Poole was given the leg up on Little Chief a fast outsider.
Laverne Fator was placed up on Mad Play, McDermott on Altawood and Andy Schuttinger was to straddle My Play.

SAN DIEGC, Oct. 11.—Dr. J. W. Peacock, arrested near here several weeks ago as having escaped from the insane ward of the North Carolina state prison where he was confined following his acquittal on a murder charge, was the victor today in a fight in which the state of North Carolina tried to extradite him to that state. Judge Marsh ruled yesterday in favor of the physician on his application for a writ of habeas corpus nullifying the extradition which was recently approved by Gov. F. W. Richardson. Dr. Peacock's contention was that he had never been legally confined to the insane ward.

Brookins, Hurdler, May Use Stride With Success on G
Charles R. Brookins, Iowa U. student and world's champion hurdler, is out for football this fall and believes he can use his hurdling stride to advantage legitimately in carrying the ball. An opponent in the open field may be hurdled without penalty if he is on his knees. On the line, the rule says, hurdling is jumping over an opponent with both feet or knees foremost. Brookins' hurdle stride is outside this rule. He's shown above hurdling the track and in action on the grid. If the opponent in the photo is considered a line player the leap is legal.

BEATEN GIANTS
BACK HOME TODAY
NEW YORK, Oct. 11—Something after the manner of Napoleon's historic retreat from Moscow, the chastened New York Giants arrived in town this morning on an overnight train from Washington, secretly convinced that the better team lost, but publicly giving due credit to the Senators for their victory in the world series. Strange to say, they were almost debonair in defeat. The so-called little Napoleon, John J. McGraw, hardly presented the aspect of the dejected slumped-over figure that a great artist painted of that earlier retreat. He wasn't jubilant, neither was he forlorn.
Somehow the Giants had arrived at the conclusion that fate as much as the Senators, had beaten them and at the same time the individual players were quick to shoulder what blame was theirs.
"I let Harris' hit in the eighth play me," said young Fred Lindstrom. "I grooved one for Harris in the third," declared Barnes. "I should have been able to get that mask out from under my feet." quoth Gowdy. And so it went. There was little or no blame to be taken and the players took it.
Altho careful to avoid committing themselves to the effect, the Giants to a man still believed they were the best ball club.
A tip off on their attitude was the fact that few of them carried hand baggage, this being not a case of neglect, but of supreme self-confidence. When the club departed for Washington to play the sixth game, George Kelly didn't even carry a tooth brush. He expected to be on his way to New York the night of the sixth game with the series ended and the Giants.
SARGUM PROUTINGS
The boy manager was desperate as he looked at his remaining line of defense. There remained a few beardless youths and one veteran. The manager's eye rested upon the veteran, a man many campaigns had marked and his towering hulk bore a dejected air for he had failed in his last battle, but in his eyes there burned the fire of youth. The desperate strife of his mates caused him to wish for just one more chance and the thot fired him with new life.
All this the boy manager saw and his decisio nwas made. He would send the veteran to the firing line once more. The veteran answered the call with a great joy in his heart; this was his last chance and he would end his career in a blaze of glory. He mounted to the brow of the hill and shot after shot he put by the enemy and completely stopped their advance til at last his mates hit the enemy line: it wavered. It broke and victory, glorious victory was won. The veteran had make good in the last supreme test.
No, people this is not the last chapter of a new Dick Merrifl story, but the story of how the veteran Walter Johnson was called on to save the closing innings of the deciding game of the 1924 world's series. Walter made good and all over America thousands of ball fans are rejoicing. Even the defeated Giants are happy to know that it was Walter Johnson that defended them in the greatest battle in the history of the national game.
There were no breaks in Johnson's favor; he just baffled the Giant batters with the greatest bit of pitching since Christy Mathewson pitched the Giants to a world's title single handed.

In "The Mask of Lopez" Fred Thomson has a corking first appearance entrance to Sunny Meadeanch with a enase full of stunts, powerful fight which starts with Thomson diving over a seven-foot fence and bull-dogging the heavy off his horse, ending with Thomson picking up the heavy, growing him in a watering trough, then dragging him thru the dirt. The cut-ins to the fight are the horse pawing, seemingly anxious to get into the fight and the girl with the superintendent voting on the side linen. Then the runaway ending with Thomson picking the girl off her horse the edge of the cliff with both horses reared up on their hind legs. In the chase Thomson does landslide, also vaulting with the horse over barb-wire fences, some kicking good runs. RICHFIELD-ATWOOD
C. C. TO BROADCAST
The Richfield-Atwood Chamber of Commerce will broadcast a community program from the Examiner Tuesday evening, Oct. 14 from 9 until 10 p.m. The artists are almost entirely residents of Richfield, who have contributed greatly in establishing a community spirit of cooperation. The concerts and local get-together meetings were a feature of Richfield during last winter, and were given under the auspices of the P-T.A. and the Richfield chambers of commerce.
Toots Mondt and Strangler Lewis are haggling over who is to be the referee in their coming title match. Don W. McDonald who admits to be one of the geratest referees in the world, is not the man Toots wants. Toots thinks that he should have had the decision to their last meeting but Ms. Don on to save the closing innings of the deciding game of the 1924 world’s series. Walter made good and all over America thousands of ball fans are rejoicing. Even the defeated Giants are happy to know that it was Walter Johnson that defeated them in the greatest battle in the history of the national game.
There were no breaks in Johnson’s favor; he just baffled the Giant batters with the greatest bit of pitching since Christy Matthews pitched the Giants to a world’s title single handed.
Of course, the great Walter would not have had his chance if it had not been for the boy manager. Back in the early part of the game Bucky Harris had put his team in the lead with a home run drive, then after the Giants had forged ahead he singled two men over with tieling runs. The critics have claimed that Harris was not a great player but his record in this world’s series should write his name high in the hall of fame. He not only proved himself a great director but a real leader. His playing, both offensive and defensive, was wonderfull. The striking out, real sportsmanship uphill fight he made which resulted in the Senators victory has endeared him in the hearts of all baseball fans. Bucky Harris is not the McGraw type nor is he a Cobb. His is the type that makes the fans feel real friendship. McGraw and Cobb demand admiration for their ability rather than real friendship.
The Senators are all heroes with the exception of Miller and he is ‘the goat’. Miller did very well but every chance he got seemed to come at critical moments, and when he slipped up it was more noticeable. Peckinpaugh was a hero more ways than one. Ruel was the magnet that held the Giant runners to their bases, and his only two hits decided the series. Zachary gets credit for two victories and he deserved honor. Why go on, one and all played great ball.
The Giant team went down to defeat with every man doing nobly. The outstanding stars, if one can draw any distinction were Lindstrom, Frisch and Terry.Lindstrom,Terry Wilson and Jackson should receive special notice as they are youngsters playing their first big engagement.
All in all, C.E.Van Loan, the greatest baseball fiction writer that ever lived, could not have arranged a more thrilling story than the actual 1924 world’s series.

C. C. TO BROADCAST
The Richfield-Atwood Chamber of Commerce will broadcast a community program from the Examiner Tuesday evening, Oct. 14, from 9 until 10 p.m. The artists are almost entirely residents of Richfield, who have contributed greatly in establishing a community spirit of cooperation. The concerts and local get-together meetings were a feature of Richfield during last winter, and were given under the auspices of the P.T.A. and the Richfield chamber of commerce.

Our old friend, John Hacken-smith, was given a chance at the championship the other evening. Old Hack was all dressed up in glowing robes of wrestling renown and introduced as the terrible man from the wilds of Chicago. Hack lasted 26 minutes and seven minutes. Both times he was a victim of the deadly head lock. The match took place up at Sacramento.
Orlando Miller is taking a vacation from the wrestling game for a while. The Fullerton club's ban on the game left Orlando with no place to train. He intends to get back into the game at an early date. He and Pete Sour stand with a victory each. The little Brea had not look up to his real form in their last meeting. Pete kept him smothered down and he had little chance to work.
Pete and Herman Stroh should make an interesting match. Stroh is as powerful as Sour and Pete could not use his smothering tactics on the big driller. If Stroh is not available old Constantine Romanoff could be relied on to give Roy Mabee's charge a merry tussle.
The Anaheim fans have proven that they will support wrestling when garried on in a clean sportsmanlike way. I believe the fans would support Roy as a promotor providing the proper talent could be employed.
All in all, C. E. Van Loan, the greatest baseball fiction writer that ever lived, could not have arranged a more thrilling story than the actual 1924 world's series.
Toots Mondt and Strangler Lewis are haggling over who is to be the referee in their coming title match. Don W. McDonald who admits to be one of the geratest referees in the world, is not the man Toots wants. Toots thinks that he should have had the decision at their last meeting but Mr. Don W. decided otherwise for which reason Toots wants to try another man. Toots should know that the champion always receives the benefit of any doubt.
The Strangler says that he has developed a safety guard against Mondt's pet hold, the jacknife scissors. We believe that the champion feels pretty safe in tackling the cowboy again or he would not jeopardise his crown.

CALIFRNIA BEARS RESPECT POMONA
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 11 — Chief interest in bay region football clashes today centered in the clash between the Pomona Sage Hens and the California Bears. Ordinarily Pomona would be classed as a practice set up for the Bears, but this year, fresh from having held the powerful U.S.C. Trojans to two touchdowns, Pomona was being regarded with more or less respect by the Bears. A considerably shaken-up eleven faced the southlanders, Jimmy Dixon and Snooky Mell both being absent from the line-up.
Down at Stanford the Cardinals took on the much improved Olympics and the Stanford eleven likewise was considerably remodeled for the last pre-conference game on the Red Shirt's schedule. Ernie Nevers was still on crutches and his powerful presence was expected to be sadly missed.
Fresno teachers went to Reno to meet Nevada today.

REPORT DEMPSEY MAY WED DANCER
NEW YORK, Oct. 11.—A report was published in a New York newspaper today that Ann Pennington, the beauteous-kneed dancer, is engaged to be married to Jack Dempsey, heavyweight champion. Dempsey, according to the newspaper, refused to deny it.
Broadway was wondering how it could be possible, since Ann recently was whispered to have become the bride of Brooke Johns the theater and cabaret dancer, and friend of the Prince of Wales. Once before whisper bethrothed her to George White.
The possibility that the story might be press agentry was not overlooked by Broadway.
“AMERICA” LEADS WITH NOVELTIES
D. W. Griffith, responsible to a greater degree than anyone for innovations in the making or prototypes, and father of the motion picture as a vehicle for art, has again made a rare departure from established custom in the timing of “America” the titanic epic or revolutionary days, which will be shown at the California theater soaring sunday.
In case it may be rightly stated that “America” embodies more distinct novelties in motion picture production than even the masterpieces with whom Griffith nitterto has revolutionized the theater world.
Aroused to a high pitch of enthusiasm over Mr. Griffith’s aims in producing “America,” patricious organizations throughout the country not only volunteered their services to aid in the research work, but derying custom and tradition, took from the museum cases and private vaults which housed them for years invaluable relics of the Revolution and offered them to the famous director for use in his picture.
Concord and Lexington, Mass., led in this wholesale temporary turning over of the most sacred relics of our battle for freedom, and Mr. Griffith has been able to

Carl Tremaine, the lad who has been knocking at the championship door in the bantamweight class for lo, these many years, is ready to make his final bid for the crown now held by Abe Goldstein.
Tremaine’s last march on the coveted crown was halted last year when he was knocked out by Sammy Goodman. And, to show his confidence in his ability to regain his lost prestige and force a fight at last with the champ, he has taken a match with the same Mr. Goodman to open his campaign.
Goodman and Tremaine meet in the first “winter” battle in the public hall at Cleveland Ohio. Billy Fergus, pormoter of the show, figured on Tremaine for the main bout and waited for Conrad Nagel to Eleanor Boardman.
Jack Onalow, managed the Richmond club which won the Virginia league flag.
Harry Hinchman, still remembered by big league fans, won the New York-Pennsylvania circuit flag with his Williamsport team.
Troy Agnew guided Okmulgee to victory in the Western association.
Terre Haute triumphed in the Three-Eye league, with Whiteraft as pilot.
John Nee managed the Augusta team, flag winners in the South Atlantic.
Mississippi valley teams literally met their waterloo. And Cletra Dixon was the Wellington team to victory in that league melee.
John Vana piloted the historic Corsicana club of the Texas association to victory.

Concord and Lexington, Mass., led in this wholesale temporary turning over of the most sacred relics of our battle for freedom, and Mr. Griffith has been able to use as properties for his scenes antiques from the shrines of the Revolution which have never before been photographed let alone by a movie camera.
The famous ride of Paul Revere, for example, was actually filmed on the road over which he rode. Even in cases where the erection of monuments or modern improvements made the "shooting" of massive scenes impossible Mr. Griffith has included scenes of the actual sites, weaving them into the action of his story with a mastery of which he alone is capable.
But perhaps of all the many innovations in the filming of "America," the most unusual is the use of large units of the regular army of the United States in several battle scenes. Infantrymen and cavalrymen, clad in the garb of British grenadiers and in the buff and blue of Washington's Continental Army sweeps majestically through the action.
It is the first time that units of the regular army have ever appeared in a dramatic film.

Goodman and Tremaine meet in the first "winter" battle in the public hall at Cleveland Ohio. Billy Fergus, pormoter of the show, figured on Tremaine for the main bout and went to Carl in midsummer to ask him to name an opponent.
"Get Goodman," was Carl's request.
There is no doubt but what Tremaine would now be champion hut for his occasional "off" nights. He claims, and his followers believe, he had an off night when he met Goodman.
Jack Coombs, who once basked in the limelight of world's series fame will change his baseball stamping grounds next spring. For several seasons the former Athletic pitching star has coached the Williams college nine. Now he has signed to act as coach of the Princeton pitchers next spring.
While the baseball world in general is still acclaiming the greatness of John McGraw and Stanley Harris, as winners of the big league flags, minor league fans are bestowing a modicum of praise on the men who led the various minor league clubs to pennants.
Of course, Jack Dunn, has won pennants so regularly in the International league that the capturing of his sixth consecutive one caused nary a ripple. In fact it drew him mainly harsh words. But Nick Allen's success in landing the St. Paul team on top in the American association was recognized.
Menphis triumphed in the Southern association and gave due credit to Johnny Dobbs, veteran pilot of Southern circuit teams.
Art Griggs led the Omaha club to victory in the Western League in his first season as a manager.
Kitty Bransfield piloted the Waterbury team to victory in the Eastern league.
Jakle Aiz sacked Lord Worth fans heart failure by winning the penchant there again, as usual.

Troy Agnew guided Okmulgee to victory in the Western association.
