SUSPECT ADMITS HAMMER PURCHASE
PASADENA, Sept. 29. Altho confessing, according to police he purchased the steel hammer used to stun Mrs. Cliffton K Hunn, wealthy Chicago woman, in her Pasadena home before she was shot to death, Harry Garbutt, former Illinois prison inmate, today denied he had attacked Mrs. Hunn.
Garbutt told police he brought the hammer to the Hunn residence the night Mrs. Hunn was murdered, following a dinner at which F. R. Gibson, retired contractor, and himself were guests, but claimed Gibson struck the wealthy welfare worker with the steel tool.
Police said the chain of evidence against Garbutt was now practically complete.
LIVES AND HOMES GONE IN BATTLES
LONDOS, Sept. 29. Five hundred peasants and soldiers have been killed and four villages destroyed in fighting between revolting peasants and Roumanian troops in Bessarabia, according to a dispatch today from Moscow.
The Soviet government has issued formal denial that the peasant uprising in Bessarabia was a bolshevik aggression. The Russian government claims that the Bucharest government sent a huge army to suppress the revolt. Bessarabia formerly was a Russian province. It was occupied by Roumanians after the war.

BILLY WHISKERS
BY FRANCES TREGO MONTGOMERY
Billy learned a lot about moving picture work when he met Toodles, and the Shetland pony went on to say:
"Over all these studios are dressing rooms, restrooms, lounge rooms, offices and a special little theatre where the films are
"I have been taking part in a picture where there were mountains and rocks and rushing streams in the background. To make it look more real in the picture, instead of having painted sheep on the hills they had a flock of real sheep and lambs in the foreground and real rocks and trees, and when the picture was finished you could not tell for the life of you where the painted sheep began and the rest ones left off.
"But I must stop here long enough to tell you what a funny thing happened—just one of those things that are always occurring when a picture is being taken:
"They had driven in the flock of sheep, shut them in a fence-off place to look at they were grasping on the side of the mountain, and the camera man had called out 'All ready!' and had begun to wind off the reel when one old sheep jumped the fence and quicker than a wink all the other sheep that could jump out did so and those that could not crawled under the fence. Well, such a time as they had getting those sheep back! They ran behind screens, under electric standing lamps and into the electric dynamic room where they might have been killed instantly had they touched some of the live wire in the room. Up the steps they went into the gallery where an artist was painting angels, upsetting his big cans of paint and causing him to speak and act not at all like a man who could paint angels. They ran everywhere, upsetting things generally. It took all hands in the studio and from the other studio too to get them back into the pen. So much for that story.
"In other rooms are big vats where the film is developed and washed and the machines where it thrown on the screen for inspection and criticism before they are sold. All this is under cover while out in the yard are the stables for the trained animals used in the pictures and a vacant space big enough to erect a building they wish to burn down in some scene or to use in putting on an auto race and all kinds of other outdoor scenes.
"I tell you what, Mr. Billy Whiskers, this movie business is growing day by day and is going to be one of the biggest in the world.
"Well, here we are at the gate. Enter my friend, and see for yourself what I have been telling you about."
They trotted into the yard and were met by a loose-jointed, long-legged and long-named colored boy who looked more like a scarecrow than a human being; he was so looney put together and his clothes were ifterally hanging on him in rags.
"Hello, Toodles! What you been all day? I done gone and missed you, you beauty! Come heath and I'll give you the core of an apple I been savin' for you all day. Whar did you pick up that long-boarded, long-horned smelling bottle you got with you?" And he took hold of his nose to pinch it shut so he could not smell the strong goat odor that came from Billy's long, silk hair. "Say, tell your friend not to use so much hair oil as that might be some folks that do not like the odor as well as that of roses or even corned beef and cabbage cookin'!"
All this time Billy was growing more and more angry at the way he was being criticised, so when in passing Nick gave his beard a twitch, it was too much for Billy. He lowered his head and gave the unsuspecting darkey a butt that sent him flying through the gate by which they had just entered, where he collided with Snub, who was coming in mumbling to himself what he was going to do to Billy to get even with him for butting him into the ash barrel. But when he saw Nick come fly-through.
Prof. Henry J. Cox, Chicago's weather forecaster, and an American delegate, will support a movement for revision of the calendar at the international geodetic and geophysical union meeting in Madrid. The revised calendar calls for a year of 18 months, of 28 days each, the odd day being set aside as New Year's Day.

touched some of the live wires in the room. Up the steps they went into the gallery where an artist was painting angels, upsetting his big cans of paint and causing him to speak and act not at all like a man who could paint angles. They ran everywhere, unsetting things generally. It took all hands in the studio and from the other studios too to get them back into the pen. So much for that story.
"In other rooms are big vats where the film is developed and washed and the machines where it is put on big rolls to dry. It is also colored and cut and put together in this part of the building. If they don't like part of a film, they simply cut it out and piece it together again or insert another scene in place of the one they discarded. Oh, it is a wonderful business! But the most wonderful and marvelous thing to me is how they can get mountains, rivers and a whole army of men on horseback in a little piece of film only an inch and a half long by one inch wide, even if they do magnify it."
(Billy uses his strong horns on another tormentor in the next story.)
