EDWARDS SPEAKER
N. T. Edwards of Orange, state highway commissioner and former supervisor, was the speaker at the monthly meeting of the Associated C. of C., held last night at the clubhouse of the Garden Grove Woman's club. Edwards talked on the roads of the county. His alde, Ben Milliken, an engineer, also spoke.
Songs set to popular airs, parodies on visiting Orange County Harbor, were sung by the crowd. Secretary Pickle of the Garden Grove C. of C. is the author.
This generation can drive automobiles, fly airplanes, talk by radio and do many other things, but it is not quite so sure that it knows how to bring up children.

CAL. FRUIT FINE
OF FINE QUALITY
Reporting nothing but the most favorable comments with respect to the excellent eating quality of California oranges this past season. Field Manager H. J. Ramsey recently made a statement to Director of the California Growers' Exchange on his observations of the larger auction markets and many private sales markets during the eastern trip from which he has just returned.
As Mr. Ramsey's work with the Exchange is largely concerned with standardization, maintenance of keeping quality and in assisting the Exchange shippers in putting out more dependable and satisfactory product, his observations should be of significance at this time.
No doubt this excellent eating quality, which has obtained in spite of considerable damage by frost to citrus fruits in California the past season, has had much to do with stimulating the movement and demand for smaller sizes, especially in valencias, according to Mr. Ramsey.
While there has been some complaint regarding the poor keeping quality of oranges, particularly navels, Mr. Ramsey states, the trade generally has felt that the decay has been much less than the character of the fruit would lead them to expect. The general care exercised by our shippers in all handling operations is largely responsible for the maintenance, with some exceptions, of generally satisfactory keeping quality. This has been accomplished under most difficult conditions.
Observations, both in auction and private sales markets, indicated that many of our shippers have been very much over sweatin their valencias. On arrival at eastern markets, fruit that has been heavily sweated or sweated for a long period shows marked indications of breaking down at the stem end. The trade generally refer to the oranges showing this condition as being aged and discount them accordingly.
RIDES "OLD GRAY MARE" AT LEGION'S ST. PAUL MEETING
May Peterson, former Metropolitan Opera singer; who married a wealthy Texan last June, is still on her honeymoon, she arrs. She essayed to prove it by riding the "old gray mare" in the American Legion's national convention parade, in St. Paul.
PUSH SHELLED NUTS
During the year ending in March of 1924 sholed almonds were for the first time distributed on a nation-wide basis. Greater effort is said to be required to sell almonds now than formerly, because the greatly increased production has resulted in supplying the old markets to the saturation point.
According to the report of the California Almond Growers' Exchange, San Francisco, California.
SANDITS ESCAPE WITH LARGE SUM
CHICAGO, Sept. 28.—Three sandits held up the West City trust and Savings Bank shortly before noon today and escaped with an undetermined amount of money which officials said might be high into the thousands.
If you want clean fruit, keep it covered; that's why God put the skin on the banana.
Observations, both in auction and private sales markets, indicated that many of our shipments have been very much over sweating their valencins. On arrival at eastern markets, fruit that has been heavily sweated or sweated for a long period shows marked indications of breaking down at the stem end. The trade generally refer to the oranges showing this condition as being aged and discount them accordingly.
During the past two or three months most of the California lemon shipments have been showing very heavy decay. Not only do the shipments show heavy decay on arrival but the apparently sound fruit develops decay very fast after arrival at the market. This decay was not due to the blue mold, our common class of decay in both lemons and oranges, but was due to Altenaria and other fungi that develop in fruit that is weak or has about reached its life limit. Many shipments that showed 15 per cent visible decay on arrival showed as much again or more by cutting open the apparently sound fruit.
One of the worst features of this form of decay is that decayed fruit, apparently sound, is passed on to the consumer. Blue mold decay is apparent from the outside. The consumer does not buy either oranges or lemons affected with blue mold decay at time of purchase. As only a part of the Alternaria decay is evident by casual examination, the consumer during part of this past season had good reason to complain of the quality of the lemons which he purchased, as he had no way of knowing whether they would show up sound or decayed on cutting.
HAVANA EATING CALIF. FRUIT NOW
Havana offers a good market for California oranges at this season of the year, when none of the home-grown variety is available, according to Dr. Mario Calvino, director of the experiment station of the agricultural school of Cuba, at San Manuel.
"Citrus fruits are produced to some extent in Cuba," said Dr. Calvino, "but usually our entire output, which comes on the market earlier than the California orange, is disposed of long before summer sets in. Your growers here should obtain good prices for their oranges in Cuba as all commodities are higher there. I believe the cost of living in Havana exceeds that in any other city in the world."
