BLAMES SOCIETY FOR DRY TROUBLES
"The time is not far distant when the same jail that houses the bootleger will house also his accomplice in crime—the wealthy buyer of his illicit product," declared Roy A. Hayner, federal prohibition commissioner, in a recent address.
"The buyer of illicit liquor is as great a contributor to the lack of respect for law today as the bootleger himself," he said. "The great difficulty is that the seriousness of the offense on the side of the buyer is not generally understood, but it is nevertheless true that if the demand for their product in the higher circles of society were shut off 90 per cent of the bootlegers would go out of business."
"It is outrageous that in any American home the household should feel more ashamed of not having liquor to serve their guests than to violate the law of the land."
"The business of this hour is the enforcement of the prohibition law. The federal government should not be called upon to put on a police uniform and police your back yards. The federal government's responsibility is manifestly to handle the smuggling situation along the coast and the borders and the control of the sources of supply within the United States. These major operations are interfered with in proportion as there is loaded onto the federal government all the things that should be done locally."

TRY TO FIND OTHER LAW VIOLATIONS
WASHINGTON, Sept. 9—Answering objections made by former Secretary of the Interior Albert B. Fall to the new oil injuryl being made here by a federal grand jury, Alice Pomerene and Owen J. An awkward young man approached the verger of a church at which a wedding was about to take place and handed him a package tied with red ribbon.
"What's this?" asked the verger.
"Oh, that's my present for the bride."
"But you shouldn't bring it here," he was told.
"Shouldn't!" queried the guest.
"That's what my card or invitation says. Look here: 'Present at the door.'"
Many stories are told of the democratic ways of the king of Italy and his fondness for mixing incognito with his people.
One day, when out hunting, he asked a peasant boy, who had no idea of his identity, to do him some small service, and in return offered him a share of his lunch, which consisted of a small loaf of black bread and an onion.
No thanks, declared the boy, with a sniff, "none of that for me. I thought you were a gentleman, but I see you are only a poor fellow like myself."
Mrs. Brown was bathing her baby when a neighbor's little girl came into the room carrying a doll. She watched the process for a few minutes and then said: "Mrs. Brown, how long have you had your baby?"
Seven months," answered the mother.
The little girl stole another glance at her doll, which was very much the worse for wear, being minus a leg and an arm.
My, but haven't you kept it nice!" she said with an envious algh.
