PRACTICE GREAT NAVAL BATTLES SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 3.—"Somewhere at sea," on the anniversary of the admission of California into the Union, a great naval engagement was in progress in which nine great dreadnaughts endeavored to withstand the onslaught of a fleet of 19 speedy destroyers bent on a swift dash in shore and the capture of San Francisco. The destroger fleet was expected to attack the battleship squadron about daylight and the battle was expected to continue throughout the day. At daylight airplanes poised on the decks of the battleships were to campulit into the air in an effort to locate the swift moving enemy destroyer fleet. Clover contact was to come later and by the end of the day San Francisco was to know its fate. And after it is all over the fleet will take up new positics and begin the game all over. The war practice was to continue Wednesday and Thursday when the fleet will return to the harbor to participate in the Defense Day celebration. COAL PRICES IN CONSUMER'S HANDS Elimination of panic prices in the coal situation and stabilization of the industry can be promoted by the consumer himself, believes John Hays Hammond, who was chairman of the Federal Coal Commission. "The coal industry is probably beset with more difficulties than any other of the great American industries, due to prevailing intermittence of operation," says Mr. Hammond. "If this evil could A Lecture on Christian Science Entitled Christian Science: The Truth about God, Man and the Universe by Hon. William E. Brown, C.S.B. OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA Member of the Board of Lectureship of The Mother Church The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass. Something over nineteen centuries ago a Roman governor propounded to the Master of men the most important question of all time, namely: "What is truth?" The Bible does not record Jesus' answer to this question, and for centuries mortals have been seeking a satisfactory solution of Pilate's query. In talking with his disciples Jesus declared concerning God and the real man "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Every afflicted mortal is still asking with Pilate "What is truth?" and Christian Science brings you the answer tonight. GOD THE ONLY CAUSE In endeavoring to comprehend the truth of being it will be necessary to consider first the source and origin of all truth—a source that is commonly referred to by Christendom as God, creator, or First Cause. In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, defines God as infinite Mind, an all-pervading intelligence in which all things live, move and have their being. Since God is all, as the Scriptures iterate and reiterate, it follows that Mind is all, and this soundness of his spiritual convictions all that is necesa is to ascertain what the M.declared upon this subject in final instructions to his disciple recorded in the sixteenth century of Mark. Jesus said to when speaking of the healing sin and disease, "And these shall follow them that believ Please note that he did right that these signs might follow may follow, or occasionally low, but that these signs should follow, imperatively, define and unequivocally. These are to follow them that believe Now is it not logical that if signs do not follow religious lief that there must be something inadequate or incompatible about such belief! This measure of proof listed by the Master is supported by a vigorous decision of James, who said, "So faith, if it hath not we is dead, being alone... me thy faith without thy woe and I will show thee my by my works." CHRISTIAN SCIENCE Christian Science has come recastablish the Christianity Jesus with its healing and demptive work. The proof it is doing this is evidence CONSUMER'S HANDS Elimination of panic prices in the coal situation and stabilization of the industry can be promoted by the consumer himself, believes John Hays Hammond, who was chairman of the Federal Coal Commission. "The coal industry is probably beset with more difficulties than any other of the great American industries, due to prevailing intermittence of operation," says Mr. Hammond. "If this evil could be removed a tremendous step would be taken in regularizing the coal industry and in helping other industries which are partially or wholly dependent on coal. "The solution undoubtedly lies in greater storage. A reasonable accumulation in storage will permit of more even production through the year, definition of the coal industry, continuous employment of labor, relief of congestion on railroads during their maximum demand season, removal of the 'feast or famine' conditions among consumers and many other allied troubles that are now felt as coal takes its course from mine to point of combustion. The fears of loss by the consumer have been studied and largely dispelled." "In the past the operators have said that storage is the duty of consumers, and as a result storing has been neglected. This cycle must be broken and a unified, economically sound practice established. It is wisely recommended and urged that the consumer, potentially the largest benefactor, should apply the needed balance wheel through himself initiating storage." GETS WATERMELON Mrs. C. L. Springer of Santa Fe Springs was the winner of the Norco watermelon at Payne's. It weighed 42 pounds. Showing the service of Payne's grocery, Mr. Payne delivered the melon on his way to Los Angeles the following morning. ONCE ALWAYS SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING Because God is the infinite and all-inclusive Mind there resides in this Mind all perfection, wisdom, beauty, culture, prosperity, harmony, abundance and joy. Since this is true the quickest way to possess these qualities is to become identified with this Mind. Solomon said in speaking of the blessings which come to one who thus identifies himself: "Happy in the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that geteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies; and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honor. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her; and happy is every one that retalneth her;" and David said, "I understand more than the ancients, because I have kept thy precepts." SALVATION From what has been said of God and His universe it will be seen that what is called salvation is really a process of awakening to spiritual facts, the gaining of spiritual vision. The prophet declared, "Where there is no vision the people perish." There are many references in the Bible to this process of awakening. The Psalmist sang, "I shall be satisfied when I awake with thy likeness;" and Paul declared "Awake thou that sleepest... and Christ shall give thee light." HEALING AND PRAYER Much that I have told you about salvation will receive assent from those who do not yet know of Christian Science, and who do not realize that the healing of sin, disease and all mortal discord is inseparably linked with true salvation—indeed this healing constitutes the proof and assurance that we are working essentially to consider first the source and origin of all truth—a source that is commonly referred to by Christendom as God, creator, or First Cause. In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder or Christian Science, defines God as infinite Mind, an all-pervading intelligence in which all things live, move and have their being. Since God is all, as the Scriptures iterate and reiterate, it follows that Mind is all, and this fact is the basic stone in the foundation of Christian Science. As God, infinite Mind, is the only cause or creator, it logically follows that all God creates must be like Himself, wholly and changelessly perfect. CHRISTIAN SCIENCE Christian Science has come reestablish the Christianity Jesus with its healing and deptive work. The proof it is doing this is evidence the ever-increasing number orthwhile suffering and disant mortals who now rejoice health and freedom. Christian Science is now ening thought in all the various activities of earth—in busi art, commerce and government. It is correcting and improving the affairs of men, making ter men and women, can them to conduct their lives accord with divine Principle so doing Christian Science is only benefiting the individual but also rapidly laying a foundation for the universal brood of man, a prolonged process possibly, but after all only way to permanent harm in world affairs. M. DOUGLAS The Picture—And The Frames In these days when every woman is her own artist, it is well to remember that no artist ever forgets that the frame is part of the picture. In the matter of her own artistic ensemble, a woman has an advantage in that she can work both ways. She may choose her "frame" that is, her clothes, hat, and accessories, with a view to their harmonizing with the picture that is herself. Then, she may also subtly make herself up to match her clothes. Take the question of the selection of the "frame." Analyze your good points and your bad points. Remember that you may always make adaptations of the popular styles which will enable you to dress becomingly, and still follow the vogue. Watch your neckline for becomingness, of contour. If your face is small, don't dwarf it with a huge hat; if it's full, be careful of the small shape. A hat with a brim casts a soft shadow over your face, generously concealing many imperfections while one without a brim, or with only a tiny one is often quite too frankly revealing. The color of your costume—especially your hat—is of the utmost importance. Colors should be tuned to eyes, hair, and skin. Unless your complexion is flawless it is wise not to wear brilliant colors except in small quantities. Drab neutral tones unless lightened by a dash of color, are also trying.
