'FRED' SENDS 'DAD' $15; NO ADDRESS
As an instance of the peculiar way in which mail is often addressed, J. H. Whitaker, postmaster, mentioned today a letter containing $15 in bills addressed only to Anaheim, Calif. Thinking the postmaster himself was meant, Whitaker opened the letter, but the only names within were "Dad" to whom the money was sent, and "Fred," who sent it. Fred, the son, said he was still working on the Hall runch.
Another letter was addressed to the "Major of the Germany Colony of Anaheim" from San Francisco. This was turned over to Mayor Metcalf, who appeared to be the person meant.
No return address on an envelope of which the destination is also incomplete makes it impossible to do anything with the letter, unless its contents reveal the identity of one of the persons concerned.
Oftn names are misspelled, no street addresses given in the case of person who has the same name as others in Anaheim, etc.
BRITISH LIQUOR SHIP IS FUELESS
SAN DIEGO, Sept. 3.—A fresh supply of water and fuel were en route today to the British steamer Gulela, which is lying in the roadstead off Ensenada, Baja California, without fuel.
News of the plight of the Gulela was brot here by the motorship Cryme, which has been chartered to carry the supplies south.
The Gulela, said to have once been the palatial steam yacht of King Alfonso of Spain, is declared to be loaded with various liquors valued at more than half a million dollars.
The Gulela cleared from Liverpool to Vancouver, where the liquor is consigned, a month ago, and came to her present grief after encountering storms in the North Atlantic, off Central America and along the Mexican coast.
Only by burning part of the ship's woodwork was it able to reach Ensenada, reports reaching here so far.
