PAIR CONFESSES MURDER OF RIVAL BENTON HARBOIT, Mich., Aug. 13.—In the county jail at St. Joseph are Emile Zupke, 24, factory hand, and Zupke's sweetheart, Florence McKinney, 19, daughter of a Royalton township farmer. Both by confession last night admitted the murder of Corn Raber, 25, rival of the McKinney girl for the love of Zupke, according to authorities. Zupke, according to his confession, choked the Raber girl to death as she rode by his side in his roadster. And driving at the wheel sat Florence McKinney, an accomplice to the crome she admitted officers stated. Zupke confessed last night, it was announced. Two hours later the McKinney girl walked into the sheriff's office and calmly announced that she had been with Zupke when he had killed the Raber girl. Nineteen years old, her hair bobbed, pretty of face, trim of figure, garbed in natty sport clothes, the McKinney girl made her confession to the sheriff without a quiver in her voice or a tear in her eyes. At the conclusion she seemed relieved. She confessed she sat by Zupke's side in his roadster while he choked the girl and then helped him dispose of the body. "We had driven down one road about half a mile. I said 'Ace, what are you doing.' He said, 'never mind honey, I am not going to hurt her.' I would say we drove about a mile. During that time I think he had her by the throat. I nudged him once and said, "what are you doing to that woman?" He said, 'I am not going to hurt her." "He then rode with his back to me and I asked him what had had done to her and he answered 'It all right sweetheart.' When we came to the railroad crossing he told me to stop there. I got out of the car first, then he got out. I said, 'Ace, you have killed her.' He said, 'I couldn't help it here.' BEIGE, RED, BLACK INCORPORATED IN STRIKING COSTUME Red and black on a beige background is striking enough in itself. It is doubly so when the colors are incorporated in a striking design as in this crepe de chine frock by Callot. APPENDICITIS IS NO NUMBER IF YOU RATTLE TELEPHONE PARIS, Aug. 13.—Don’t rattle the receiver! This is a recent warning put out by the Paris Telephone company. That patience is the prince of virtues (and Paris is certainly its general headquarters) is proclaimed by a little circular informing telephone subscribers in the French metropolis that after July 27 there when calls do not receive immediate attention will do well to abstain from shaking the hook up and down. Many exasperated people now do it in the vague hope that the flash will attract the attention of the Hello Madam-selle. Sometimes it does, but more often it doesn’t; for she is too busy with her little mirror or her daily powderpuff, or even her little lunch of rolls and chocolate, which she munches every morning at ten and then again at four. Now since July 27, the subscriber is warned to cultivate more patience, or it will be a case of the first ones last and the last ones first. The new apparatus RED and black on a beige background is striking enough in itself. It is doubly so when the colors are incorporated in a striking design as in this crepe de chine frock by Callot. APPENDICITIS IS CALLED DISGRACE LONDON, Aug. 13.—Appendicitis is a disgrace to the medical profession, in the opinion of Dr. Herbert Craiger, well-known English doctor. "It is a disgrace to our profession that we have not been able to discover the cause of appendicitis," Dr. Craiger told the assembled members of the British Medical Assn. at their annual meeting at Bradford. "There is strong reason to believe," he added, "that the disease is connected with our civilized mode of diet. Those of uncivilized habits do not get it." The famous Democratic organization in New York, Tammany Hall, has a woman as well as a man leader in each of its 23 districts. causes a number to appear over the subscriber’s lamp which shows that a call has been made. But if the hook is touched the number disappars, and the impatient subscriber loses his turn. Number 1 may become No. 7 upon a little rattle of the hook, and another shake may make him No. 15. In fact, if he continues to waggle their is no reason why he should obtain any answer at all. Pea Pod Soup—Reserve pods from shelled peas, wash and cook for 15 minutes, strain, being careful to press out all the juice. To each cup of liquid add one cup of rich milk and a tablespoon each of flour and butter, season to taste and cook 10 minutes in a double boiler. Pan Broiled Ham — Fry ham quickly, turning often; sprinkle thickly with maple (or brown) sugar and put under burner until sugar is melted. Crab Meat Salad—Take one can crab meat, remove from immediately on opening. Pigskin shreds. Add three-quarters cup cut up celery. Mix crab meat and celery with thick mayonnaise. After cooking add nut meats that have also been run through the grinder. Stir constantly while cooking. Cherry Preserves—Two pounds cherries, weighed after stoning, one and one-half pounds sugar. Add the sugar to the stoned cherries and bring them quickly to the boiling point. Cook rapidly until the fruit is clear, skimming as necessary. Pour at once into clean hot jars and seal. Cherry Conserves—Three pints pitted sour cherries, one pint black raspberries, two and two-thirds cups sugar. Combine ingredients and cook until thick and clear. Rice Croquettes—Take one cup cold cooked rice, add one well beaten egg. Drop by spoonsful on greased frying pan. Turn when brown, serve with jam. Berry Shortcake—Take sufficient pie crust dough for one pie, red medium thin, have buttered pie plate, lay on flat and bake brown and crisp. Split, butter and put berries between and on top. Recipe for pie crust calls for six tablespoons flour, four tablespoons shortening and butter mixed; two tablespoons ice water. It is easy to remember being multiples of two. SUGGESTIONS When whitewashing the cellar, add a few drops of bluing to whitewash, also add a small quantity of salt. This will make it a much whiter color and also make the whitewash cling much better to the wall. A piece of sandpaper put under both clamps of the food chopper, rough side up, will keep them from working loose and slipping. 2.98 Nation-Wide Values The "Ruffian" Hat For men—rough finish, satin lined; colors: peacock mixture, sand mixture, or grey mixture. 1.98 Nation-Wide Values "Lady-Lyke" Corsets Our own brand; hooked and laced front; pink coutil and elastic; 4 adjustable supporters of heavy web, sizes 22-32.
