CROWN JEWELS OF RUSSIA ARE SAFE LONDON, Aug. 13.—The Russian crown jewels, which have been the subject of many rumors, are not only safe in state keeping but have been displayed before an English M. P. He is Sir Martin Conway, the art authority and Conservative member for the English university, who returned to the House of Commons a few days ago after several weeks in Russia, finding out how art is prospering under the new regime. He said that he had visited Moscow and Petrograd and had been given every facility to study art. When authorized to see the crown jewels officials brought them and put them on the table before him, "They are well guarded," he said, "and while I was examining them the room was full of people who were unmistakably officials. Their purpose in keeping them? Well, the Russian sense of national property seems to have increased in the proportion that their respect for private property has decreased, and I may say that the people there really think that this property belongs to them. "Art has probably never been thought more of in Russia than it is today, and not only have they 250 museums, as against 52 before the war, but they are being taken great cars of and are extraordinarily well visited." "The royal palaces and the big homes of well known people in Russia are preserved as museums and are today just as they were left. There is, in fact, what you would call a craze for museums. "As to Russia itself there are everywhere traces of her former magnificences. There are scenes of stately ceremonial in Petrograd, and also there are big burned-out houses. Russia today is like a frame without a picture." A first aid kit is more important that a Maltese cat. Where there is no filth there are no files. ENGLISH WOMEN WINNING FAME Slowly but surely, and greatly aided by the war, women physicians of Great Britain and Europe generally are winning their way to a plane of absolute equality with men. This was the impression given from an interview with Lady Florence Barrett, considered the greatest woman physician in England. Wife of a famous psychist, she is herself Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, president of the Medical Women's federation, obstetric and gynecological surgeon at the Royal Free hospital and lecturer in various important medical schools. Here is how she sums up the position of women in medicine: "Women have now been in the profession for more than 50 years. At first there was no school that would admit them—no examining body that would grant them diplomas. The difficulty, however, was overcome by our pioneers. Mrs. Garrett Anderson founded the London School of Medicine for Women and in the United Kingdom Dublin was the first to grant medical qualifications to women students. Mrs. Anderson worked unremittingly and in the end the Royal Free hospital opened its doors to women internes. Two large London hospitals have been founded by women and are staffed entirely by women physicians and surgeons. In the Ministry of Health women hold important positions." CAT SAVES CHILD FROM RATTLESNAKE ROSEBURG, Ore., Aug. 13.—The life of little Sylvia Rowe, two and one-half years old, has been spared due to the quickness and fighting qualities of her pet cat. The child, barefooted, frotted behind her mother, who was carrying was to hang in the backyard. Suddenly the mother heard a hissing sound and, terrified, turned around to see a huge rattlesnake gliding in the tall grass. The little girl had stepped on the reptile, which instantly colled to strike.
