FIRES BROADSIDE AT OPPONENTS Replying to an accusation of his opponents, Cong. Phil D. Swing fired three big guns in a broadside that Swing's friends say ought to set at rest any suspicion that his opponents have been endearing to arouse concerning Swing's standing at Washington. The three big guns are letters written to Congressman Swing, one of them by Cong. Nicholas Longworth, Rep. floor leader, another by Cong. A. H. Vestal, Rep. whip, and the third by C. H. Slemp, secretary of President Calvin Coolidge. The latter letter shows the friendly relationship of the White House toward Swing. The Longworth letter already has been made public. Opposing papers have said that Swing has not co-operated with Republicans in Congress. Swing's friends have declared this criticism to be unfair, unjust and made out of whole cloth. The letters which follow explain themselves. Albert H. Vestal Indiana HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OFFICE OF REPUBLICAN WHIP Washington, D.C., June 6, 1924. Hon. Phil D. Swing, House of Representatives My dear Colleague. Permit me to express my appreciation of your help and cooperation during this session of Congress. Probably there has never been a time in the history of the House when the responsibility of the Whip has been as great as in the present Congress because of so many divergent views of members. You have been a real help to me as Republican Whip, and while we differed on some questions, I could always count on you when fundamental Republican principles were involved. You have represented your District well, and I bespeak for you a splendid victory in the coming election. Sincerely yours, CONVICTS RUSHED TO FOREST FIRES SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 13. Dignity and Indignity Dignified gravity sits heavily on the countenance of the United States Lawn Tennis Ass'n at all times. Not for a moment can it relax from its official attitude of weighty claim. Perhaps this accounts for the fact that the Tennis Ass'n falls to see the joke of barring American player-writers from Davis Cup competition under a rule that can have no effect on the writings of foreign representatives who come to this country for no other purpose than to lift the value trophy. Merry quips of any sort are seldom appreciated by the association, as Pat O'Hara Wood of Australia, can torify. Mr. O'Hara Wood, guest of the Tennis Ass'n at its annual dinner several years ago, appeared without evening clothes. Asked to speak, he gave the following reason for his failure to observe the conventions: "While on my way here I planned to stop off somewhere and hire a dinner kit. Seeing a store down the street, I went in and asked the proprietor if he had a suit to hire for the evening." "Sorry," says he, "but I've hired my last suit. You see, there is a dinner of the United States Lawn Tennis Ass'n tonight." Painted silence greeted the corral times have been regarded as in danger. Two new fires in Plumus National Forest were reported today and forces of men rushed to the scene in an effort to control them. HEART AND HOME PROBLEMS BY ZELIZABETH THOMPSON A LOVE QUERY Dear Mrs. Thompson: About month and a half ago I met young girl at a dance, but did not take much interest in her until a short time ago. I have taken her out on auto rides and seemed to like me pretty well. Now I am very much in love with her. One evening we cut out for a ride and for one reason she got "peeved" some time. I guess I did not act the way I should have and hurt her things. There is another young man with whom she has been going out and I am wondering if much now whether she likes the other man more than she does me. I apologized to her, and she promised she would be she had been before with me. When I was with her she was very nice to me and carried on nice conversation. I would love anything if I could find out how she feels toward me. I need to make an appointment with her to go out, but she told me she already had an appointtment with this other fellow. How can I win her love back again? MUCH WORRIED. It looks to me as if the girl sees you well enough, but doubts our interest in her, and there are tells you about the otherung man to show you someone else is interested in her. Do let her see how much you are for her, and do not show that you are jealous of the otherung man. If you throw your ear at her feet she will not blee it as much as if she is not in doubt for a while. Conclude to take her places and be courteous and considerate of her as you know how, and keep in doubt just as she keeps. A RETURNED LOVER Dear Mrs. Thompson: I have been going with a boy for two years. During that time he never cared to go to dances and went to very few parties. But he would go to shows and other entertainments whenever I wanted to. He said it was because he liked me and not that he wanted to go. I liked him real well and did not mind missing dances. Last December he stopped coming to see me and started to go with another girl. OTHER GIRLS Dear Mrs. Thompson: About the months ago I started going with a girl and she was very to me. Then suddenly she had her friend started to hint at she had other affairs. I am very fond of this girl and it brings me very much to have her as she does. Lately she is acting as she used to and treats me well. My friends say that she does me, but sometimes I doubt I have been going with other girls, but she knows that I like better than any other girl. But do you think is the matter with her? Is it all right for girl call boys up and ask them or? All my other girl friends but the one of whom I have on speaking does not. WHY? Probably the girl you care so much for is upset because you are other girl friends, too. Even you tell her you like her best, does not feel sure of your real life as you enjoy the company of other girls. Doubtless feels if you cared very much for her you would want to give the other girls and spend all your time with her. If you are angry and not in a position to siderear marriage for a number of years, I would advise you to go as you have been doing, having number of friends so that no will feel that your intentions serious. She is right in not being you up to ask you to come. PUZZLED AILEEN: Keep the end who is away. I was not really jealous of her, but still every time I thought of it a feeling that was not easily forgotten would come over me. Then after school was out in June he stopped going with her and one Sunday he called up and told me he wanted to see me. Once or twice since that I have met him by accident and he has said he had something to tell me. Would it be right for me to let him come to see me again? I still like him real well, but I do not want to be forward and do the wrong thing. BLUE EYES. Yes, indeed, it would be all right to let the young man come back. He has learned his lesson now and realizes that you mean more to him than the other girl. The less said about the period he did not go with you, the better it will be. Let your friendship go on as if there had never been a break. BOLBY—Tell the young man again that you do not care to go with him. Then if he lacks sensitivity to such an extent that he persists, tell him bluntly you do not want him to bother you. OWES AN APOLOGY Dear Mrs. Thompson: A young man for whom I care very much will not speak to me because I owe him an apology. I fully intend to apologize but as yet have not had the opportunity. Please tell me how I can go about this, as I want to do it as quickly as possible. Would it be proper for me to send him word to come to my home or what shall I do? GRACE B. Write a note of apology. Say first you hope you may be friends again, but do not urge him to come to see you. If he wants to he will come. Plain Dealer Classified Ads produce results. Try this medium.
