SOUTHLAND CLUB WINS YESTERDAY SAN DIEGO, Aug. 12—The first real races in the fourth annual regatta or the So. Calif. Yachting Assn. and the second annual regatta of the Pacific Coast Yachting club will be held this afternoon when the larger boats—yawls, schooners, R and star boats and ketchers—compete for Pacific coast honors outside the harbor in the ocean. The first race today for R class boats over the quadrangle course of 12 nautical miles, will start promptly at noon. Close on the heels of this will come starts of the star boats, arbitrary handicap sloop class, schooners, yawls and ketchers. The Southland Sailing club, of Balboa, rounded away with the honors for the first day yesterday whet they captured first place in three events, each of their entries making exceptional time for the four mile course. The San Diego Yacht club captured one event when S. A. Coean’s “Princess” crossed the finish mark first in the miscellaneous sloop race. The real races are on tap for today when the “R” and “star” classes perform. Keen interest is LEONARD INJURY TO DELAY FIGHT CLEVELAND, Aug. 12—A severe injury to the thumb of his right hand, suffered during the third round of his ten round decision bout here last night with Pal Moran, New Orleans light weight, will force postponement and probably a cancellation. Benny Leonard’s bout with Mick Walker for the weaterwolfs championship of the world, which was to be held in New York Aug. 20. Fighting at catch weights in night and handicapped by an N month’s lay-off, Benny was able to handle Moran almost as pleased, newspaper men at a longside giving him every one of the ten rounds. He had Moran trouble on several occasions as his injured thumb is believed to be all that saved Moran from knockout. FLIERS G I ON BOARD U. S. S. RICHMOND, OFF REYKJAVIK, N land, Aug. 12 (By Radio)—Lie Lowell H. Smith and Lieut. B Nelson, only two U. S. Army pilots of the four which star from Los Angeles upon their girdling flight, had virtually ceased today upon the desperate chance of attempting an $800 hop in their next stage of journey homeward. Hope of establishing a land base at Angiangsalk, Greenland the next charted stopping place the route is dwindling, because the heavy field of ice lying that harbor, and it probably be necessary for the airmen eliminate this port and contend on to Cape Farewell. The planes have a capacity slightly more than 100 miles can be seen the aviators will embark upon a daring vow of they attempt to reach Farewell, 800 miles away, with an intermediate stop. The Southland Sailing club, of Balcoa, romped away with the honors for the first day yesterday when they captured first place in three events, each of their entries making exceptional time for the four mile course. The San Diego Yacht club captured one event when S. A. Cobean's "Princess" crossed the finish mark first in the miscellaneous sloop race. The real races are on tap for today when the "R" and "star" classes perform. Keen interest is centered in these events because more than 50 boats are catered and many of them are 1923 champions, who are defending their honors. The "Angela," neat "R" boat belonging to Sil Spalding of the California Yacht club, now holds honors in Southern California in her class and will compute against the "Patricia," "Dobra" and "Peagy" of the California club, as well as the "Lady V," "Francesca" and the "Betty" of the San Francisco Yacht club. San Diego's hope in these classes will be the "Aloha". In the "star" class will be seen the "Friar Star," present holder of the coast title, and "Mala" from the California Yacht club. NASHVILLE YOUTH SPRINGS SURPRISE SOUTH SIDE TENNIS CLUB, CHICAGO, Aug. 12.—Donald Cramm of Nashville sprang the big surprise in the national junior tennis tournament here today when he defeated Eugene MacAuliffe of New York, favorite for the boys' title, 6-4, 6-1. In the junior section, Neal Gullivan, Philadelphia, defeated Howard Langle of Seattle in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3; Allan Harrington of Los Angeles defeated Yewel Rice, Cincinnati, 6-2, 6-1; Cranston Holman, San Francisco, defeated Clifton Haynes, Wichita Falls, by default. COBHAM WINS AIR RACE FOR KING CUP LONDON, Aug. 12.—Flying at an average speed of 125½ miles an hour, Levi H. W. Jones finished today in the 950-mile "round Britain" air race for the boys' title. His time was seven hours, 34 minutes and 12 seconds. Jones was a scratch man. He used an Armstrong-Whitworth machine. The contest was won by Alan Cobham, whose net time—allowing for handicap—was five hours and 59 minutes. BETTY COMPSON AT UNITED THEATRE Manager Anderson of the United theatre has picked another winner for his patrons in "White Shadows," starring Betty Compass. Jack and Tommy might bring home a part of the English debt that we hear so much about. The two of them would bring a big lump of Johnny Bull's coin, which easily cut to pieces, but smiling and fighting back at the finish. This bout helps to raise the Wills stock a lot. Wills had not fought in years and he was not as good as he is now. That fight helped him a lot to get back into the game. Mr. Firpo may have an awful argument on his hands after all. Wills is in a tight place. He has been dogging Dempsey for years for a chance at the title, now it begins to appear that he will at last get his chance, but if he should knock Firpo out in short order, say in three rounds it would be doubtful if he should get his chance at the title after all. Jack Kearns is not going to take any great chance if he can avoid it and it would be easy to avoid Wills on the color excuse. The Leonard-Walker bout is to be postponed on account of an injury sustained by Leonard in a bout with Moran. Leonard's right thumb was dislocated and probably fractured. The injury will cause Leonard to suspend training indefinitely and necessarily will place the Walker match on the indefinite dating. Leonard easily defeated Moran. The New Orleans boy only taking one of the 10 rounds. Leonard just outclassed Pal in every department of the game. Little Helen Willis celebrated her first appearance on American courts after taking the Olympic honors by easily outclassing Mrs. Beaupure of Canada. Miss Willis took the set by the score of 6-0, 6-0, which easily tells of her ability. We take our hats off the city council in their taking up the matter of inviting a major league club to train here next spring. If Anaheim is successful in landing one of the teams, it will be one of the biggest boosts for Anaheim that could be made. The city needs a real ball park and athletic field. The high school grounds are becoming more cramped each season and the city park could be used by the high school to good advantage. The English fight fans took to laid their championship hope out so easily. They are bidding for a Dempsey-Gibbons fight to take place some time in October. Gibbons did look mighty good against the Englishman. He is a wonder fighter, but we believe that Champion Jack has just too much power to give Tommy a chance. If Tommy could land his punches and keep away from Jack at the same time he would wear the champ out, but that is almost impossible. Jack and Tommy might bring home a part of the English debt that we hear so much about. BASEball To NATIONAL Chicago at Boston, on account of rain. AMERICAN St Louis at New York BETTY COMPSON AT UNITED THEATRE Manager Anderson of the United theatre has picked another winner for his patrons in "White Shadows," starring Betty Compson, which opens a two days' run tonight. Betty Compson, who has a succession of triumphs to her credit does some wonderful work in this production. She portrays the twin sisters, Nancy as the headstrong, defiant, selfish girl, and Georina, as the sweet, gentle unselfish girl. Action is what has made photo-plays the most popular indoor amusement and action in abundance is to found in "White Shadows." In brief, the story relates the adventures of restless, headstrong Nancy Brent, and the influence on her of her sweet, unselfish twin sister, Georgina. Both girls love the same man, played by Clive Brooks, but Nancy, thrust the self-sacrifice of Georgina, eventually wins him. Each member of the cast does excellent work, but honors easily go to Miss Compson as she does such splendid work in the difficult dust role. Added features are Billy Sullian in "The Fast Stepper" and Felix comedy, "Felix Loves Out." Sport Sparks (I. N. S. Staff Correspondent) That financier who claims we are benefitting by foreign exchange evidently hasn't lamped some of the trick boxers who have been arriving lately. It takes a long while for an amateur golfer to get off the rocky road to Dubland. The Deadly Force of Habit A chef for one golf club was so used to smothering onions that he choked his wife in a fit of absent-mindedness. Firpo called on the President at the White House, no doubt to entice the aid of the army and navy in his coming battle with Willis. THE PLAIN DEALER, ANAHEIM, CALIF.
