ASS'N MANAGER WARNS GROWERS
An address by Carlyle Thorpe, manager of the California Walnut Growers' Ass'n, was the feature of the fourth annual field meet of walnut growers of So. Calif. in Santa Ana. Thorpe warned growers against increasing their acreage, on the ground that an ever-production with lower prices was threatened during the next five to 12 years.
At present tone the of the trees are in full bearing in California, one third in part bearing and one third not bearing at all.
The value of the new method of accurate estimate was emphasized by Thorpe, who reminded growers that most of the crop was sold or contracted for before the holidays each year.
A trip to the San Joaquin ranch was a feature of this afternoon's doings.
The 500 growers etc. present are holding their meeting in Birch park.

SANTA ANA, Aug. 11.—The report of the sub-committee on harbor lands of the Coomitte of Fifty, appointed by the board of supervisors to make an investigation of the feasibility and cost of the proposed program of improvement a: Orange-co harbor today had been completed and its makers, headed by H. H. Hale of Place-tin, chairman, said it comprised an invaluable record of the history of the county harbor.
In 1837 the sandsplit on which Newport Beach and Balboa are now situated was non-existent, according to maps included in the report. The tide at that time swept what is now the north side of the bay and the ocean entrance was direct into what is now known as the upper bay.
George Peabody, secretary of the sub-committee, read the report and presented a map which showed the above condition to be existing up to as late as 1858. In 1872, when he first saw the harbor the present state existed, according to John Cubbon, member of the committee, indicating that heavy storms and the depositing in the lay by the Santa Ana river of silt had brought about the change in 14 years.
The report substantiates previous statements made by Peabody to the effect that the committee had definitely acquired for the county about three miles of frontage on the bay and that thus court action about three more miles would come into the possession of the county.
The executive committee, according to Hale, had virtually gone on record recommending to the supervisors that lore land on the lay be purchased.
"That recommendation now is out of order," Hale said. "The county will now have all the land on the layfront it wants."

TRAVELS MILES TO COOK FOR THREE
By wearing a pedometer, an Iowa farm woman found she usually walked five miles each day in preparing meals for her family of three. With the aid of a member of the cooperative agricultural extension service of that state, she studied the placing of her kitchen equipment. After rearranging it to meet her particular needs were effective, the pedometer showed, according to reports to the United States Department of Agriculture, that the distance she had to walk in preparing one day's meals was but 2.5 miles, exactly half that required before, leaving her, she states, more time to read, write, and sew.
ANIMAL SURPLUS USED AS MEAT
The number of animals on some of the various big-game reservations maintained by the Biological Survey of the Untied States Department of Agriculture have increased to such an extent that it is necessary to dispose of an annual surplus. It appears to be most advisable to use the turn-off from these areas every year for planting purposes. In the case of buffalo, however, there are no suitable areas of open range left in this country. Some animals of this species that are available for disposition may be used for exhibit purposes, but most of the surplus will probably have to be disposed of as meat.

WOMAN TRIES TO COMMIT SUICIDE
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 11—Mrs.
Charlotte M. Lex, who last week brought suit for $50,000 against August Vollmer of Berkeley,
formerly Los Angeles chief of police, for alleged breach of promise to wed and asserted seduction,
was recovering here today following her attempt at suicide.
Mrs. Lex took poison and then turned on the gas, she told police, and then became so ill she decided to call her physician.
Instead a telephone girl called the police, who found Mrs. Lex seriously ill.
Suicide notes found in the Lex apartment said that Vollmer's action in making public "things" she had told him, caused her to make the suicide attempt.
