THAT WAS ONLY A IMAGINATION NEW BULLETIN ON HOME CANNING With three months of the canning season still in prospect, many housewives have already this season, applied to the College of Agriculture at Berkeley for the latest information looking to economy and wholesomeness. To meet such NEW BULLETIN ON HOME CANNING With three months of the canning season still in prospect, many housewives have already this season, applied to the College of Agriculture at Berkeley for the latest information looking to economy and wholesomeness. To meet such demands, Professor W. V. Cruess and Professor A. W. Christie have just got out Cirenlar 276 on "Home Canning," which is ready for distribution without charge. Cruess and Christie know how. We suspect that even their dreams are a quite systematic picture of Principles of Canning, Causes of Spoiling, Methods of Preserving Sterilizing Fruit Juices, Preservatives, and Methods of Home Canning—to mention only the headings of their four introductory pages. One has only to visit their wonderful research laboratory and workshop in Hilgard Hall, on the university campus, to understand why the three dozen pages of the new circular are so easy to read. There are, besides, 11 excellent illustrations. One of the most valuable sections of the new circular deals plainly with Ptomain and Botulinus Poisoning. Neither need be feared if directions are actually followed. We note that vegetables, in order to be safe from these dangerous toxins, must be sterilized under pressure; simple boiling or open steam cooking is insufficient. The writers, in this connection, italicize a warning against older publications, including "Circular 158," in which sterilizing in mere boiling water is recommended. In other words, adequate knowledge of these poisons—especially Bacillus Botulinus—is very recent. USED FOR FUEL The pulp of olives from which oil has been extracted is used for fuel in Spain.
