NAT. CHURCH DAY
SANTA CRUZ, Calif., Aug. 8.—Departmental policies of the American Legion were expected to be carried on under the new officers elected by the annual convention late yesterday much along the same progressive lines that characterized the retiring administration, it was declared today as delegates left for their homes.
Nathan Coombs of Napa succeeded James F. Collins as department commander; Vern B. Fish of Red Bluff is first vice commander; Dr. E. R. Fountain, Merced, second vice commander and Miss Jean Griffin, Pasadena, third vice commander; James K. Pisk of Berkeley was re-elected adjutant.
The convention adopted a resolution expressing confidence in the policies of the retiring officers and condemning attacks made on them by certain papers.
OIL ACTIVITIES
SAN DIEGO, Aug. 8.—With one well owned by the Anglo-American Oil Company already down 1300 feet and two additional British and American oil companies ready to start extensive operations, drilling for oil on Cape Colnett, near Ensenada, Mexico has been started.
The motor ship Gryme sailed for Ensenada last night with supplies for the Anglo-American Company and another trip by the Gryme will be made next week to carry additional supplies, it was learned today.
A gold strike is also said to have been made in the famous Alamo field and has caused great excitement in Ensenada.
Selection of a national church day when all legion posts will attend church and offer support of the churches' Americanization program was voted in another resolution.

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 8. Startling charges that Jack White Los Angeles millionaire, whom he is suing for $100,000 for alleged failure to star her in motion pictures, made a similar complaint with Belle Edwards, anotherress, were coupled by Ann Lueker today in a bitter attack upon Miss Edwards and Juanita Hessen, another screen celebrity while defending herself from an attempt on the part of Attorney Schenck to impeach her credibility as a witness.
The impeachment attempt came as a complete surprise when Schenck attempted to support charge that Miss Luther's son against White smacked of black mail.
The charge was briefly denied by the actress who, shortly afterward, burst into tears when Schenck asked her if it were true that she had offered to give White his letters back for $10,000, during the course of a conference in the Ambassador Hotel.
When she regained partial control of herself, Miss Luther so bed out a choked denial.

SACRAMENTO, Aug. 8.—Huspicious aroused by the scent of a strange perfume emanating from her husband's coat where she kissed him goodnight, Mrs. Ella M. Lecari filed suit for vince against her husband, Joseph F. Lercari, who is contending the suit.

SANTA BARBARA, Aug. 8.—Arthur Cadwell, 67, wealthy Carpentieria farmer, found dead in his home last night with a gun beside his body, was murdered, according to relatives who today demanded the authorities investigate his death.
Cadwell never owned a gun and had no reason to kill himself, his relatives asserted.
He was a pioneer of this section and owned one of the largest walnut ranches in the state.

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 8—Believed to have either fallen or jumped from an eighth story room in a local hotel here early today, S. S. Hawley, 55, end said to be wealthy, was instantly killed.

Her being missing since Wednesday night the dead body of Ray Eard, chicken rancher near where was found today by neighbors living from a rafter in a barn.
Shepard, authorities here said, admitted suicide, they believed, because his wife was committed to insane asylum recently and is ill health.

COURT NEWS
SANTA ANA, Aug. 8.—Hans Hansworth of Santa Ana, accused of driving a car while under the influence of intoxicating liquor, will go to trial in the first department of the superior court August 21 at 10 a.m. His case was set down for trial today after he had been arranged and pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The accident in which Hansworth was involved at Culver's Corner resulted in the death later from injuries of Mrs. Iva. Cumings of Santa Ana.
SANTA ANA, Aug. 8.—Emil Fisenback, C. H. Kelso and A. C. Shively were made defendants in a suit filed today in the superior court by the Merchants National Bank of Fullerton to collect $326 alleged to be due on a note.
GARDEN GROVE OPENS BIDS
L. D. Folsom was the lowest bidder on the contract to construct Garden Gruve's sewer, which will connect with the joint outfall sewer. He bid $15,802.54. The connection will be made at a point 1800 feet south of Santa Ana's sewer on Verano-st. The contract will be awarded Aug. 12.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 8.—Director of the veteran's bureau Frank Hines, announced today the appointment of Colonial Frank E. Leslie as the new director of the veterans' bureau hospital at Camp Custer, Mich.
Leslie was in charge of the veterans' hospital at Palo Alto, Cal. He is succeeded there by Dr. P. G. Borden.
