ATTORNEY-BOXER SHOWS PROMISE
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 8 — "Fightin' Bob" Sage, Detroit attorney, who literally fought his way through a Michigan law school, is the ring sensation in these parts.
Sage opened his California appearances with a sensational bout here against Mickey Rockson, the blackamith, who recently won from Bert Colima, Whittier, California's crack middleweight.
Although floored twice in the first two rounds, Sage came back in the third and fourth and gave Rockson a beating. He knocked the Californian for a nine-count in the third and only the bell prevented him from slipping Mickey the sleep potion.
Sage is the best middleweight seen on the const in some time. He knows how to punch and hits from any angle. He punches straight and hard and is extreme, aggressive.
The Michigander must have a weak chin, or he would be on top in his class today. Rockson, never a kayo artist, dropped Sage twice for counts. Sage, however, easily outboxed Rockson, and earned a decision. The Judges thought the California boxer was entitled to a draw.
Colima and Sage will probably mix it before the easterner returns home. Sage looks like a mark for a good right hand, and Colima should beat him. Of course his fight against Rockson was his initial try at the four round racket, and Sage may show more class later on. He appeared over-confident in meeting Rockson and left himself wide open at times.
Sage should be able to win from Jack Reeves, the San Francisco middle, and the Detroit boxer and Roy Pelkey of Oak.
August 7th 1924 was Jimmy McDowell day at Washington Park Los Angeles. No one had any notice that it was going to be McDowell day, Jimmy just went out with his mighty stick and made it so. Jimmy set a new record for the big park. In the smaller parks there have been strong armed ball players that swatted out three homers in one day but never before has the stunt been accomplished in the Washington Park. Jimmy's three were real he homers, nothing flooky about them and he almost got another Goebel, center-fielder of the Oaks, made a very remarkable catch of a long drive that was labeled for a four ply smash.
Jimmy's three homers counted for six runs. The best the rest of the Tigers could do was one lonely run so you see Jimmy was about the whole show.
Berkley is one town that is going to be turned to topsy-turvey in celebrating the return of her Olympic hero The mayor, the president of the University, the college fraternities and soreties, business men, in fact everybody, young and old great and small, is planning on Helen Wills reception. "Dad" Wills is all puffed up with pride; every one is all excited but the little eighteen year old girl. She has never known the art of registering excitement. Her mastery of herself at all times has won her the name of "Little Poker Face."
All of California is proud of Helen Wills. May success and notoriously never spoil her simplicity of character. In the days just before the great games, she was as much concerned over her marks in college as in her tennis form.
August 9th will prove to the English sporting world whether they have a real pugilist hope or another flyer. Jack Bloomfield
STEEL STOCKS SHOW NEW LIFE
NEW YORK, Aug. 8.—The stock market made no immediate response today to the important developments which followed close of yesterday's market, among which were the markdown of the federal reserve bank rediscount rate at $ per cent, the swift ascent of sterling exchange quotations following cable report of the approaching agreement to the details of the Dawes repayment plan, and the publication from inspired sources of details of the exchange of stock in the Nile El Plate merger.
Some stocks were marked slightly higher at the start of the market, but for the most part stock movements were a repetition of the irregular and featureless sessions of the last few days with profit taking in some sections going on under cover strength in others.
The railroad stocks by far are the most prominent the some of the high priced dividend stocks were as active as the mergers stocks and equally buoyant price movements.
With the announcement of the relationship of the stocks of the old companies in the new Nickel Plate lineup there was speculation of active price changes today. Nickel Place, sold in a small volume up to 114 1-2 for a gain of 5 points over the previous close.
Some advances in the high priced specialty stocks livened up the market for the first hour, but prices reached in this period were for some of these stocks the highest of the day.
Another good record was made by the steel stocks under the leadership of U.S. Steel, which was favorably affected by reports of a decided increase in operating rates. Independent steel stocks also showed a tendency to rally from the reactionary trend which featured them in the last
BOXER LOOKS TO MEETING CHAMP
PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 8 — With a possible bout with Johnny Dundee featherweight champion, as a reward, Babe Herman and King Leopold are prepared to battle every minute in their 10 round main event here tonight at the Armory.
Herman, with a record of 18 knockouts and 33 decisions, is the favorite with the "aces," but Leopold's punch is backed by many to win the decision.
ALL LONDON TO SEE U. S. BOXER
LONDON, Aug. 8 — Sixty thousand tickets have been sold for the twentyround bout here tomorrow between Tom Gibbons, St. Paul light heavyweight and Jack Bloomfield of England, it was announced today.
Both fighters are in fine condition and confident of winning. Gibbons, who has become immensely popular here, is the favorite.
Bloomfield, who is to be married shortly after the fight, said he would go to the United States and challenge Jack Dempsey if he wins.
DENIES SHE WILL ABANDON TENNIS
PARIS, Aug. 8 — Suzanne Longen, French woman tennis champion, who has been ill, indigently denied today that she would give up tennis entirely.
"Altho I was forced to abandon the games at Wimbledon and the Olympics, I hope to resume matches as soon as I get well," said Mile, Longen.
NEGLIGIBLE NAG AMAZES RACE FANS
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. J., Aug. 8 — Wampee, a 40 to 1 shot ridden by Johnny Malben, the Tia Juana sensation, shocked a big crowd of race fans this afternoon by winning the Expectation Hand.
She has never known the art of registering excitement. Her mastery of herself at all times has won her the name of "Little Poker Face."
All of California is proud of Helen Willis. May success and notoriously never spoil her simplicity of character. In the days just before the great games, she was as much concerned over her marks in college as in her tennis form.
August 9th will prove to the English sporting world whether they have a real pugilist hope or another flipper. Jack Bloomfield has the English folk all 'heat' up with the belief that at last a real heavy prospect has arrived. Their hope is getting the acid test in meeting no less a celebrity than Tommy Gibbons in a twenty-round bout. If Bally Jack does not know a lot about the boxing game he is liable to be taught considerable in that twenty-round go with America's most scientific boxer.
If Bloomfield should score a knockout in the early rounds, Firpo, Wills and all else would be forgotten. Jack Kearns would immediately raise his price and go to talking a billion dollar cut. Rickard and the English promoter would begin raising each others bid and there would be great doings. Enough money would be involved to make a big payment on the national debt. But let us not get excited. Gibbons has not been knocked out and stands one chance in a thousand of being.
The endurance test for horses, that of being ridden sixty miles a day for five successive days, proved too great. Of the seventeen entries only two entered the fourth day grind and they both had to give up when about half the required sixty miles was covered. Sixty miles seems a short distance in these days of fast autos, but sixty miles on horseback is quite a journey and to keep it up for five days is some stunt.
Howard Kinsey upset the tennis world when he defeated little Bill Johnston. Howard is the most brilliant half of the famous Kinsey doubles team. This team is almost invisible but neither was considered great in singles. In the present tournament at Southampton Howard has developed into a phenom. If he keeps up his present form Big Ben Tiden best look carefully to his laurals.
Hank Gowdy, the Giant catcher, was honored last Tuesday by having the day set at the Polo Grounds aside as Gowdy day in honor of his being the first professional ball player to answer the call of his country in the recent war. Besides Tuesdays honors Gowdy has received much comment and has had a government field in Georgia named after him. Hank is a real he-man and is very popular.
Rogers Hornsby of the St. Louis Nationals is the only man above the 400 mark in the National Championship.

Rogers Hornsby of the St. Louis Nationals is the only man above the 400 mark in the National League. Babe Ruth holds that honor in the American and Duffy Lewis is the privileged character in our Coast League. How Duffy ever got out of the big leagues is beyond me. He was playing sensational ball when he left Boston and be surely has been keeping up the place since joining Salt Lake. Duffy is not only a great batter but is equally as great in the field.
Babe Ruth seems to be bent on gathering all the honors possible to a ball player. Rogers Hornsby is going great after having a lot of trouble with his management last season. We are surprised at the big second baseman's record after last season's trouble.
The Giants have a long lead in the National loop. The critters were picking the Giants to fall this season while the Yanks were thought to be safe. The Giants have had a hard fight of it but have pulled out in the lead where they can take a breathing spell necessary. The Cubs have pumped badly after putting up such a fight till about a week ago. If the Yanks wobble out on top again there is certain to be another great N. Y. world series. The supremacy of the Yanks play last year will be forgotten and the two teams will go on the field for the big games with honors about even.
