WATER SUPPLY OF COUNTY WELL UP
The Santa Ana river contains more water in proportion to its usual volume than the Kern, Kings, San Joaquin or Sacramento, and Orange-co is one of the best-off in regard to water supply of any in the State, according to Nat Carwife, engineer of the Anaheim Union Water Co. This company and those allied with it, including the Santa Ana Irrigation Co., will be able to supply its growers without difficulty, in spite of two successive dry winters.
In Carwife's opinion, the spreading of the two previous seasons in the sources in the San Bernardino now is providing part of the supply. The spreading the past season was very small, both by the three counties and by the Water Conservation Ass'n in which Riverside, San Bernardino and Orange-co's are represented.
The counties in the other river valleys possess water levels far nearer the surface than Orange-years.
JUDGE "FORGETS" IF SLICKER STUCK HIM
SANTA ANA, Aug. 5—If R. C. Miller of Los Angeles gave Justice of the Peace John B. Cox a $25 no-found check after the judge had performed a marriage ceremony, Judge Cox has no recollection of the matter, he said today, in commenting upon a dispatch from Los Angeles in which the wife suing for divorce, accused her husband of the no-fund check stunt.
She was quoted as stating that her husband was always "broke" and that when he came to Santa Ana he did not have the price of a license.
The eminent trust magnate was going over the books with his new system expert.
"Whew!" whistled the s. c. "Your legal department costs you a heap. Still, suppose you have to maintain it?"
co, which because of intensive agriculture—something that hardly exists in most of the other sections—has caused its water level to sink markedly in the last 20 years.

FINE LOVE ROMANCE Term
One of the most compelling and primitive love stories ever told on the screen, is embodied in "The Covered Wagon." — Emerson Hough's novel which was pictured by James Gruse for Paramount with a feature cast. The picture will be the feature at the California theatre for four days beginning Sunday.
The romance between Molly Wingate, "the belle of old Liberty town" and young Will Banion, late of Doniphan's army in the war with Mexico, with a clouded record which brings about near disaster for the loves of both, is not only beautiful but inspiring. There is all the strength of passion, the rugged charm and the wilderness sweetness that characterized the country in the days of 48.
A bitter rival in the character of Sam Woodhull causes untold trouble, but in the end all comes right. The production is one of exceptional massiveness. Thousands of persons appear in the varied scenes, fully one thousand being full-blooded Indians, all descendants of the savages who harassed the wagon trains as they crossed the plains during the gold rush period of 1845. There are many dramatic scenes, the chief of these being Indian attacks on the wagon trains, a real buffalo hunt and a thrilling prairie fire.

TRUSTEES RESOLVE TO OPEN ROADWAY
Defiance helps were taken last night at the regular meeting of the Fullerton Board of Trustees to open the long-contested and long-desired Starbuck-rd., following recommendations from F. H. Lyon, city attorney, on what steps would be necessary for condemnation proceedings. This road has been the Nemesis of the Fullerton board for the past seven years; money having been put up several years ago by residents of that vicinity towards the opening of the road; just the move to the present time having been blocked by an property owner. The board last night passed a resolution for condemnation proceedings for a 40-foot right-of-way across the K. B. Norswing property. The action which has been hanging fire for several weeks in the present council, being an heritage from the last, was due largely to the efforts of W. J. Carmichael who insisted that the city of Fullerton "fulfill its obligations to these people without further delay." A communication from the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co. was received and filed prompt action in the removal of telephone poles from the right-of-way of the proposed Starbuck-rd., or, as it is also called, Valencia Drive.
A communication was received from Clyde Bishop of Santa Ana regarding the percentage basis on which the Placentia, Garden Grove and La Habra sanitary district might be admitted to the outfall sewer system, and a resolution was passed by the board admitting three districts.
The matter of a purification plant for Fullerton was referred to the health board for investigation and recommendation.
A communication was received from the Monetary Board of Trustees inviting the Fullerton board to attend the League of Municipalities convention there on October 6-9, and the pageant on October 13-19, and the city clerk instructed to reply that as many of the board as possible would be present.
The production is one of exceptional massiveness. Thousands of persons appear in the varied scenes, fully one thousand being full-blooded Indians, all descendants of the savages who harassed the wagon trains as they crossed the plains during the gold rush period of 1849. There are many dramatic scenes, the chief of these being Indian attacks on the wagon trains, a real buffalo hunt and a thrilling prairie fire.

World Leaders Bow to Superstition
NEW YORK, Aug. 1.—Superstition has another slave.
Giovanni Papini has disappointed America.
Long awaited as a lecturer at Columbia University, he has failed that institution. Scathing critic of things American, the great author, notably of the "Life of Christ," will continue to denounce us from a distance.
The savant is superstitious. The teacher is a fraidcat.
If he should come to the United States death would surely claim him just as it took off his disguised countrywoman. Duse. That is what the highly intellectual man fears.
And he is by no means the first person of intellect or high position to be a victim of superstition.
Belief in signs, talismans and lucky numbers is not confined to the illiterate. Princes and their professors, as well as poets and peasants, hand down strange folk lore of countries.
Ghosts strut in full paraphernalia for the learned master of the house as readily as for his humble retainers.
Pensants are often afraid.
But so are the Papillas.
When Lord Carnarvon died of an insect bite, after exploring the tomb of King Tut-ankh-Amen in the Valley of the Kings, many persons said he fell victim of an ancient Egyptian curse awaiting those who desecrated tombs. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, famous author and student of the occult, was inclined to accept the superstitious idea that the poison lay in the curse and not in the bites.
Then there is the weird gray raven of the Elysee Palace that flutters around the French "White House" every once in a while to the intense horror of the present tenant. In Marie Antoinette's time the bird called and croaked wearily. Shortly afterward the revolutionary mobs made life a burdge to the Queen; and she was finally led to the guillotine.

Empress Eugene saw the hateful gray bird, which she knew "meant the girl no good." Since Napoleon had such extremely hard luck in his conquering business, it is reasonable to suppose that Marie, his second wife, must have really heard or seen the bird, as she claimed, and is responsible for starting the superstition.
There is scarcely anyone who will not "knock wood" after he says, "I have a good job," or "I have written a new song which will knock them dead," or "I just met someone that is crazy about me," because he fears, for some reason, if he expresses pleasure or confidence without paying the tribute to superstition of touching wood, that something will change the luck from good to bad.
The late President Faure of France had a call from the raven and later died in the notorious Mme. Steinhell's apartment, which made ever so many of the populace say, "See, I fold you so!" So it is not surprising that when Potncare heard the winged visitor croak a few years ago that he expected trouble in double doses.
Superstition, a good authority states, is "that which others believe and what we do not." The reliction of our friend, if differing radically from our own, seems to us to superstition.
"In the heart of nearly every human being," the Encyclopedia Americana goes on, "savage or civilized, exists a settled conviction that he dwells in the midst of an unseen world people with beings of strange powers, who thwart the plans of his own life or assist him in his endeavors."
