DRIVING AND PUTTING AROUND ... with Grue We looked over Ralph Noble's public course at Bellevue and Western-Ave., Los Angeles Sunday and decided Orange County had a sportier and better public course at the harbor—in fact Orange County Public Course is unequalled in Southern California. A warning to the Anaheim golf colony—Jimmy Heffron is back on his game. He demonstrated this fact to our entire satisfaction at Fairway Club the other day. Our affable sporting goods dealer, Pete Wisser, who for some time past wore a bandage on his good right hand and listened patiently to tales of "wonderful driver" and "dead shot" putting, is again in active competition. The enforced rest has improved his game, it is reported. McClellan, who dispenses drugs at Gibson's has taken his golf seriously—on seriously, in fact, that he has quietly slipped down to Orange County Public Course several times of late for instruction by professional Joe Szarfinski. Mac's head was buzzing with "Stance," "Grip," "Address" Etc., while returning to Anaheim recently when a speed cop nicked him for a ten. A bad drive we call it. Pairway Pro. Armstrong set the pace this week. Jack lowered the course record recently made by J. R. Porter. Armstrong went out in 32 and came back in 29 making a 61 for the 18 holes. W. O. "Bill" Hart of Orange is the proud owner of the fife leather caddy bag which was first prize for the ringer tournament just finished. Hart's winning score was 49. Joe Rawley finished second with a score of 50 and won a club. The remodeling work on the club house has been finished and a reception is to be held this week-end in celebration Parti- county road from the pavement to the club property line is to be started at once and at the same time Pro. Szarfinski will start a crew to work on the road thru the club property. Mrs. Szarfinski has established quite a reputation for herself in the culinary department — yes, even golfers eat occasionally. A sweepstakes tournament is in progress over the week-end and with the improved condition of the course some new records should be established. Unoco The Axelson Machine Co. trophy—a full set of clubs and bag—was carried off by E. B. Perry with a net score of 131 for 36 holes. J. P. Varner was runner-up with 136. Another tournament is scheduled for August 2-3 with a caddy bag as first prize, donated by the Brown-Douser Lumber Co. This will be 18 holes of medal play. CHAMPION PICKS YOUTH AS PARTNER LOS ANGELES, Aug. 1.—William T. Tilden, II, national tennis champion, announced today he had selected "Sandy" Welner, 16-year-old Philadelphia player, to be his partner in the national doubles championships to be played next month in Boston. Johnston, No. 2, in America's tennis list, in the final of the men's singles of the Seabright invitational tournament here this afternoon. The score: 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. It marked the end of a series of victories for "Little Bill" in the Seabright tournament. He had won the title the past three years. Miss Browne easily defeated Miss MacDonald, 6-0, 6-1. SEABRIGHT, N. J., Aug. 1.—William Johnston and Howard Kinsey, both of San Francisco, will meet in the men's singles this afternoon. Johnston, paired with Clarence "Peck" Griffin, also reached the finals of the men's doubles event They will meet the winners of the Behr-Mathieu-Kinsey brothers match for the title. Mary Browne of Los Angeles, former national singles title holder, will meet Mayme MacDonald, present national clay court champion, in the finals of the women's event today. Both finalists in the men's singles played remarkable tennis yesterday to come thrue. Little Bill had Niles on the run continuously, never giving the Bostonian an outside chance to win a set. Most of the rallies were long, but Johnston was always on top of the ball when the final heat came off. Only once did Nat appear dangerous. This was when he ran three games to 5-4, Johnston serving. Wee Willie served out a love game from this point to clinch the game and match. Howard Kinsey's win over Luclen Williams, former Yale tennis champion, was expected by the writer. Joe Rawley finished second with a score of 50 and won a club. The remodeling work on the club house has been finished and a reception is to be held this week-end in celebration. Partitions were removed and a hardwood floor laid converting several rooms into a combination dining room and ball room. Grading for the new No. 2 green is almost finished and will soon be ready for seeding to grass. This work is causing no inconvenience to play unless one overshoots the old No. 2 green. The new grass on the greens is so heavy most players are experiencing considerable difficulty with their putting. The greens are mowed only on Saturday during the hot dry season making them quite slow just before mowing. Orange County Public Course Every day finds new improvements at this historic old course. This week the clubhouse sported a new coat of paint and several more greens had the approaches smoothed to perfection. New direction posts have been installed and the tee boxes repainted. Gene Tunney has been the American champ for quite a while but he has not been in demand. The public was not acquainted with Tunny's real ability till he beasted Carpentier. Now all the big promoters are bidding for Gene's services. Jack Reddy seems to be the lucky promoter as he announces that he has Gene and the Georgia whirl wind. Young Stribling to fight in St. Paul a ten round bout some time next month. This should be a great fight, and one that should help to straighten out the title tangle. Mike McTigue holds the title; Stribling won a newspaper decision over Mike in New Jersey, where a title can not change hands only by a knock out. The Irishman was wise enough to keep away from a knock out there by retaining his crown. Stribling is a wonderful lad but his age is against him. He has been shoved ahead too rapidly to be at his best. Tunney should best him at this time. Stribling may be man enough to beat Tunney but if he is he is a wonder. Tunney is not a slugger, he combines hitting with science. He is rugged and can take a lot of punishment. Gene is content to take time and cut a man down to a knock punch, he is not putting everything he has into one big punch. Gene looks to have more fighting brains, this and his maturity should make him the popular choice to win. Talking of boxing, Roy Mabee read of Orlando Miller taking up boxing and has this to say: If Miller is a boxer I am to, I can beat any tire any place with 'the gloves." CONTROL FOREST FIRE AT QUINCY (Continued from Page One) control a forest fire that threatened the town of Quincy in Plumas-co. A number of ranch homes and the Fowlers Station resort were burned before the advancing wall of flame was checked. The fire had burned within a mile of Quincy when stopped. Another great forest fire in the Plumas National Forest was blazing unchecked today, ten miles from Quincy. All available fire fighters are being sent to the assistance of 125 men already battling this blaze. The town of Floriston in Truckee Canyon, which was menaced by a fire in that region, was penetrating today as a turn of the wind rection. The great blaze in the Cleveland National Forest in the extreme southern part of the state was giving foresters grave concern. Chief Forester Paul G. Redington was expected to arrive on the scene late today to take personal direction of the fighting this blaze. Two of the most critical months of the fire hazard season were issued in today. Acting to prevent the starting of fires, 19 deer hunting counties were closed to hunters and further restrictions may be decided upon should carelessness result in additional fires being started. The Floriston fire in Tahoe Forest was still running out of control on the northeast side and additional men and officers were being rushed to the confiagration because of its seriousness. The old Forest Hill Divide fire was reported still out of control and running wild before a high wind which swept the flames over all of the lines which had been thrown around the blaze in an effort to bring it under control yesterday. Duffy Lewis still leads the coast batters. Old Pole Schneider of Vernon has battered his way up to the second position. He is just two points ahead of Bert Elliison and six behind the leading Duffy. Brick Elrod of the Indians is in the fourth position and lindimore brings up the fifth. Lewis and Frederick both of Salt Lake are tied for home run honors with 23 each. Ellison of the Seals hit 21 high, wide and far away and Brazil of Portland and Arlett of Oakland have lambasted 20 each. Manager Bill Kenworthy denies that he is about to resign his management of the Portland team. Bill lays the poor showing of his club to poor pitching. May be so but his boys are not hitting up to their standard and are not converting their hits into runs. Babe Ruth came through with another circuit drive Tuesday. It was his thirty-second of the season, and was made off Holla Thur-don who has been causing so much comment on his great pitching, having won ten straight. Young Nationalista, a little Fillipino, and George Rivers fought a draw at Vernon the other evening. Rivers took the first two rounds and the Fillipino the last two. Jimmy came to Brooklyn as an outfielder but was put in at short as a sub and while the Dodgers have tried out many shortfielders, Jimmy has never got to go back to the outfield. He was injured in Pittsburgh several days ago and will be out for some time yet, maybe for the rest of the season. Mitchell has not been much of a success in the big time. He has been playing with Minneapolis this season. He described the dapper young student as having a governess childhood who was too strict wif him and he contracted the hall of lying at an early age in order to escape her rigid discipline; having always indulged in morchantas" in which he picture himself a "great intellectual" and "a master criminal, directing band." He still has phantasies in the jail. FRIDAY, AUG. 1, 1924 Letters From the People Communications to this column should be limited to 150 words, and signed, altho signature will not be reproduced if that is the desire of the writer. Editor The Plain Dealer: "What's the Matter With the Movies?" was a head line appearing in your paper yesterday. The greatest "matter" seems to be an attempt to fleece—rather than cater to—a wise public. For instance: Friend wife and myself attended a local playhouse Saturday evening where the main and almost only attraction was Champion Jack Dempsey. With the exception of the Dempsey picture, the most ordinary "ham" could have played either of the leading rolls in the other picture, which was little of nothing—not to mention the fast-moving flash-it-on and flash-it-off round-the-world news. The writer has paid the tariff, given to charity, literally thrown money away and rolled the "galoping dominoes," but he could not get to first base, either fancy or catch-as-catch-can, with a book of instructions made of asbestos, ruled with sulphuric acid and atticed with cat-gut, when it comes to getting the "jack" in competition with this "better movie" stuff fleecing. The price is not exorbitant—but let the movie magnates put on a show of more than one short picture, that is worth at least two-bits, and give the public a run for its money. Why not get a gun and demand the admission price without other pretense? AN OBserver. Anaheim Calif., Aug. 1, 1924. Dear Editor: I have read several comments on the pictures shown at the剧院 recently and those to be shown during the 'greater movie campaign." We have two children, a boy 11 and a girl 15. Quite often we go places that the children do not care to go and no doubt would prove dull and dry entertainment for them, so we allow them to attend—a picture show. Sometimes we do not know what kind of show is on or, even which theatre they attend until they return-home and tell us about it. To some folks we may appear very careless, but we have attended shows with them and have bumped into good pictures and bad ones. Folks, any of us would go thru fire to rescue our children from danger or harm of any kind. Let us keep the ball rolling and demand a "greater and clean movies program," with true publicity of the same.—A FATHER. Free Bread! 24 oz.
