SPOKANE, Wash., July 30—A new series of forest fires are eating their way into thousands of acres of valuable white pine timber in Ferry, Pond Orrell and Stevens-cos in eastern Washington today, according to reports from the stricken district. Help is being rushed from the northwestern part of the state in response to calls for fire fighters. One report said that unless the fire in the Lost Creek district can be controlled within 24 hours, the town of Lost Creek may be destroyed. About 500 acres of trees have been burned near Kettle Falls and what is described as a raging mass of flames with a front of one mile is burning near Lake Teo. CONTROL BLAZE IN ANGELUS FOREST LOS ANGELES, July 30.—A forest fire in Angelus Forest near San Bernardino was reported today under control after raging fiercely for a time, forestry officials here said. Perhaps the postoffice fire was mild compared with the flames of emotion fanned by the love note penned by Gladys Walton in "The Love Letter," at the United theatre Thursday night. This Universal production features Miss Walton as an overall factory employee who conceals love letter in outgoing garments. The consequences of this tendency form the motive of the plot. The story was created especially for Miss Walton's use and affords the star opportunity to prove her ability as a dramatic actress as well as providing those comedy touches for which the buoyant little actress is so well known. King Baggot, a favorite Universal director, directed the production. To assure a perfect interpretation of the story, Universal selected players of unquestioned ability to support Miss Walton, including Edward Hearn, popular leading man; George Cooper, Fontaine La Rue and Alberta Lee. LACK OF EVIDENCE Justice J. B. Cox today dismissed the charges of burglary against Thomas Pendrini and Charles Alasie whom George Teaney of Costa Mesa accused. Cox, at their preliminary hearing, ruled there was not sufficient evidence to link the men up with the crime to warrant their being held to the higher court. H. Carlton to all owners of mountain property: "California is face to face with the most dangerous fire season in its history. Last winter was short on rain and snow, and the whole country is now as dry as it usually is in mid-summer. "This is a mighty serious situation from a fire hazard standpoint and one that can only be successfully met by the exercise of the most extreme care with fire by everyone who goes into the mountains. "Please remember, and also impress upon everyone you meet, that every single spark of burning matches, cigarettes and tobacco should be put dead out before they are discarded, and that camp fires should be thoroughly extinguished with water and covered with earth before they are left. "As a user of the National Forsts, we are counting on your help to not only assist in suppressing fires, in accordance with the terms of the permit which you hold, but also to do everything in your power to prevent fires from starting. "Will you help?" PROBE SALES OF BOOTLEG SUPPLIES PRESCOTT, Ariz., July 30.—A sweeping investigation into the methods of wholesale firms in Arizona, charged with selling large lots of raw materials for the manufacture of illicit liquors was ordered here today by Judge Fred O. Jacobs in district federal court. "From the evidence adduced in various cases during the present session of court there is sufficient evidence to warrant presentation to the federal grand jury the question of conspiracy to violate prohibition laws and I direct that the investigation be made," was the order of Judge Jacobs. LEWIS KEEPS TITLE SAN FRANCISCO, July 30.—Ed Strangler) Lewis today retained his heavyweight wrestling title by taking two falls out of three from Sanislaus Zbyszko. Lewis won the first with a headlock in 18 minutes, 45 seconds. Zbyszko took the second in 18 minutes and 40 seconds with a combined toe hold and arm lock while Lewis ended it with a headlock for the third fall in 9 minutes and 50 seconds. Willis has taken a lesson on the Dempsey.Firpo battle will keep away from the slaps on Firpo. Willis is a that Dempsey almost lost jewelheadgear by going in close work with the Argo Bull. It was in a spell of fighting that Dempsey took that drove him entirely out of the ring. Wills confidently believes he can hold Firpo at long end and jab the South American to submission. True, Firpo does his best dart work at close quarters fights a bull-rushing type of title. Anyone who can keep from him—or keep Firpo—has a chance with him. Their chance is fair or silly. Heat also had its effect on all of the westerners, Johnston noticeably was affected and lacked his usual power of volleying and driving. Griffin's loss to Giles was not altogether unexpected, as an even match seemed inevitable. Griffin looked tired and winded at the start of the second set. Howard Kinsey's win over Norton was well earned. Yesterday was a bad day for Davis cup players, the Canadians and Mexicans falling at the hands of competitors. William Johnston eliminated Jack Wright in one of the best matches of the tournament, carrying former national champion to two long deuce sets at 8-6, 7-5. Wright led at 6-5, in the first stanza, when the California-increased his speed and by clever net play pulled out the set. Luke Williams defeated Crocker, the other Canadian, while the Mexican players were all beaten on the first day of play. GRANDETTA AND HERMAN WINNERS PORTLAND, Ore., July 30.—Babe-Herman of Los Angeles and Frankie Grandetta, "Little Shlek" of Hollywood, easily won their bouts last night at the Armory boxing show here. Between a depth of 3000 and 3500 feet 12½-inch casing will be set. The Marland Oil Co. of Calif., which has succeeded the Coast Land Co., is determined to make a good well of it and is proceeding slowly, Sidnam declared. The concern has appropriated $150,000 for the purpose. The company's log shows that the structure is 600 feet shallower than that of the Standard and 400 feet shallower than that of the bandoned Keck well on Brookhurst-ave. New machinery has been put in and a new gas line laid. The Standard Oil Co. is expected to continue drilling southeast of the city until mechanical or similar difficulty prevents, Fred Weisel, agent representing the lessors, said today. The company is down between 5500 and 5700 feet. If Weisel is right—and nobody except the Standard's headquarters knows anything further—the company will not stop at 6000 feet, if drilling still is smooth. The significance of the Union Oil Co.'s bringing back of Hole Well No. 7 near Brea with a production of 900 barrels of 22.5 gravity oil is being discussed excitedly now, when it appears that a new sand never before tapped was met with at 2498 feet. The previous well, drilled to 3000 feet, was plugged back, after having long been idle. The production 10 years ago was only 300 barrels.
