A. S. STEEL NEAR RECORD FOR YEAR
NEW YORK, July 30.—Speculative stocks were maintained at other price levels today, largely the buoyancy of U. S. Steel common, which, under an enormous volume of transactions, sold to 106, or about 3 points less than its best previous price of the war. Its former high mark of 109 was made in February, under entirely different conditions.
Then industries were booming, steel production was at the highest rate since the end of the war; daily output of steel ingots is the largest in the history of the industry. In the subsequent three months' decline of 49 per cent, the output to the low figure since the first part of 22, while unfilled orders shrunk most in half.
The effect of the general shrinkage in domestic industries seen in the low earnings and passing of dividends on representative oil and dependent steel companies, but present markets in securities are buoyed up, by present performances, but the prospect of better business in the next season which industrial leaders claim to be very tight.
The Iron Age, for the third consecutive week, reported today a measurable increase in steel orders, with "sentiment increasing rather than actual business."
With industrials leading the way, the railroad stocks gradually retraced their steps to lower ice ground and such activity as Erie, New York Central, high, Baltimore & Ohio, Chester and Ohio and St. Paul predeed and Northern Pacific a little lower on the average.

SECOND ACT OF THRILLING DRAMA
EVANSTON, Ill., July 30—The second act of that thrilling drama, "Who Knows Who Smashed the Nose," opened to another capacity audience in the new Evanston theatre today.
Justice Henry Williams, who, to permit the public to see and hear re-enactment of the battle of Cleero in which Rosetta "Topsy" Duncan received a smashed beezer, a fractured rib and black eye on July 5, left his stuffy court room for the more commodious theatre, presided again today.
"Topsy" was to resume the first thing this morning under cross-examination of the attorney for 224-pound Policeman Widlock, whom she charges with assault.
The 100-pound stage star already has been fined $7 for badly heating Widlock, but that was in the Cleero court.
Long before court convened at 10 o'clock a crowd awaited opening of the doors. By 10:04 the theatre was packed and lot were left outside.
More than half those who got in carried their lunches.
FINAL CHAPTER
The final chapter in the account of the escape from the Orange-co detention home of three young girls, who left for Los Angeles with four local boys, was read in the superior court this morning when Judge R. Y. Williams sentenced Worth Prescott, Santa Ana "sheik," to serve time in the state school at Jone until he is 21 years old.
Prescott was taken before Judge Williams after he had waived preliminary examination and pleaded guilty to the charge of aiding the girls to escape. Roy Burch and Ed Arnold, two of the remaining three concerned in the escape, were previously committed to lone. Bruce Petty, the fourth boy, was sentenced to lone and the execution of the judgment suspended until he is 21 when County Probation Officer R. B. Miller said he would be required to return to his home in Kansas.
The girls were captured near Van Nuys. Prescott was captured while he was with two of the girls near a deserted cannery. The other boys were taken after spending the night in Los Angeles.
